Guardians is better than Indians. But they had many options.
Cleveland Spiders, (Sure, why not?)
Cleveland Blues. (What the team was named after they stopped being the Spiders.)
Cleveland Bronchos, Cleveland Naps. (What they were called before they became the Indians.)
Cleveland Hope. (The city was code-named 'Station Hope" on the Underground Railroad.)
Cleveland Barons. (Champion team in the old American Hockey League.)
Cleveland Kidds. (Rear Admiral Isaac Kidd was one of the first victims of the attack on Pearl Harbor.)
Cleveland Rocks. (Would be fun.)
Cleveland Football Team. (I'm just messin' with ya.)

Like the city itself, the name is...neutral. Neutral is the southern gentleman's way of saying something, much in the same way that southern belle's use, "Bless your little heart."

Rethinking my sharp barb, I rephrase and offer an alternative. This name COULD have been extremely cool if they had set up a licensing arrangement with the MCU and used Rocket or Groot as their mascot. I could get behind that.

I think Westheim would love your idea about using Rocket as the Guardians mascot.

I wont mention the woke nonsense.

I will ask if, out of 1100 supposed suggestions, if this was truly the best one on the list.

I wonder if they saved money by keeping the last 5 letters the same.

I like the name. Cleveland was long overdue for a name change and re-brand.

I think " Guardians" sounds like a Saturday morning cartoon, action show..or, a trai-mit organization.. It's Dolan's team, though, so he can call it what he wants. I was hoping for the "I-Words".

It would have been entirely appropriate. LOL

The Braves should, in my opinion, take the name of the Minor League team that was there from 1903 until 1965 before the Braves moved in, in 1966.....Atlanta Crackers. Short for Firecrackers by the way, not the pejorative for poor white folk.
Even with your explanation of the origins of the name I found this childishly amusing. That's on me.
Nah, truth be told I had a great big deep belly laugh picturing potential logos.
None of them had anything to do with firecrackers and I thought many of them would be quite appropriate.

I was sure they would go with Caucasians, using the same script and everything.
Just seemed "correct" on so many fronts.

Meh. I was hoping for Spiders, but whatever. Guardians sounds like a third-tier small town British soccer club or something. "Onward, Guardians! Ha'way th' lads! Tally ho!"

But seriously, on some level you have to hand it to them for picking something that only the locals will appreciate, rather than going with the name that would have moved a lot of merch nationwide. Considering how corporate the game has gotten during Smelig and Numbfred's Reigns of Error, that's almost sorta refreshing.

One thing: The Spiders get a lot of flack for that 1899 team, but that was really more the fault of the league for allowing the same owners to own more than one team. Because of that, all their good players were moved to St. Louis, and the Spiders got shafted. They had some pretty good teams before that fiasco. Money over common sense! The more things change, eh?

But even putting aside all that, it's not like the Indians name had a winning tradition. Two measly championships in over a century, and none in 73 years? It that had happened in St. Louis, they would have either moved to Baltimore (oops, wait a minute...), or they would have deep-sixed the Cardinals name years ago in favor of, I don't know, Archers or some such. Cleveland fans, the baseball gods were not pleased with you guys for some reason, take the L and move on, go buy a Guardians hat.

So as a kid growing up in Cleveland, you never learned anything about the city, or even looked around?

I was never a fan of some of the other ideas like Spiders or Blues.

I like the new name and logos, and those Guardians of Traffic are really cool.

As opposed to "Indians". The city has a very minimal native population and even less of a subcontinental one. The city has no public monuments to native Americans, though there is one of Mahatma Gandhi. "Indians" is a name that has zero connection to the city's history.

The team would be the Surveyors if they wanted to connect to the city name.

Yeah, but what would the short name be?

Opponents would say something sure to get me zotted for typing it out…
