The University of Richmond would disagree:

There's Only One Spider

Richmond is the only university with a spider mascot, and we find that fitting. In nature, spiders are known for their tenacity and grit, their unexpected sociability, and the strength of the webs they work so diligently to create. Turns out UR Spiders aren’t much different. And although the origin of our mascot is difficult to pin down, our distinctive identity today is clear. The spider is a fittingly unique mascot for a university unlike any in higher education.
Although the mascot is downright frightening. And not in a good way.

Can we not compare pirates to a racist team nickname and logo? It's obviously a completely different situation...

It's not serious. The context is lost due to deleted posts.

why would you name yourself after a team that holds the record for most losses in a season?

What Do You Think of the New Cleveland Nickname?

Don’t really care either way. It’s fine I suppose. The more people get bent out of shape about nicknames, the less I care about it.

I was hoping for Spiders. I would've like Blues. But Guardians is okay. It will take some time to get accustomed to.

their mascot was a red-faced cartoonish indian with a stupid-looking smile... i have no problem with this. it was clearly a characature(sp?) of stereotypes.

I don't think the use of "indians" on its own should be a reason. I don't get mad at the 'fightin irish' stereotype of a drunk angry irishman, lol. I've also never faced beratement on a systemic level. that'll give you a unique perspective for sure.

i think each context should be given it's own process. apply same logical reasoning, get reasonable and consistent results. for example, the cmu chippewas (spelling). The school approached the tribe at some point (late 1980s?). The tribe said it was fine but change a few things. If i recall they didn't approve of the indian face on the helmets, so they changed it to some javelins or whatever they are, it doesn't matter. The point is, you make sure the culture you are are appropriating and making money in some way while using it isn't offended... it's pretty low effort stuff about whimsical things... let's be honest.. it's not that hard to be courteous and slightly sophisticated about it.

the indians mascot clearly wasn't in reverance of anything. cmu wanted to use the symbol in a respectful manner in which all parties were content. This is not a black and white issue.

in the end this is really small potatoes in the grand scheme, regardless. so, default to being less rude and exclusive being safer path for not looking silly from a historical point of view.

Huge missed opportunity. The Spiders is a fantastic name with local history and their gear would have been popular among people who aren't fans of the team or even baseball. Nobody outside Cleveland will be buying Guardians gear.

I don't think that a team that hasn't won a world series in over 70 years should have been named after another one that holds the record for most losses in a season.

Outside Cleveland it will be thought to be a protest group of some sort.

The kindest word I come up with to describe the choice of Guardians is... Lame. The obvious choice of anyone who knows baseball history was Spiders.

The Braves should, in my opinion, take the name of the Minor League team that was there from 1903 until 1965 before the Braves moved in, in 1966.....Atlanta Crackers. Short for Firecrackers by the way, not the pejorative for poor white folk.

I always wonder how much of this is of any interest to Native Americans and how much of it is driven by non-Native Americans who want to pat themselves on the back and bask in the glow of their own enlightenment and sensitivity.
