I am coming to realize, I believe, that I have no valid reason to support a salary cap in MLB. DeRosa is backpedaling big time. He wasn't joking and he was also dead on. I don't understand why Manfred is often considered some bumbling idiot. He is a cunning and ruthless person. If anyone has ever read Baseball Cop by Eddie Dominguez they would maybe have a different perspective of the man who was groomed by Bud Selig (another real piece of work). Of course, if you do read the book you open yourself up to a really dark side of baseball and what humans are willing to do to each other for profit.

Castellanos sounds naive in that piece. You can't trust a single thing that comes out of Manfred's mouth. So why listen to him? The only thing that might do is allow him to convince some of your fellow players that what he's saying is the truth when it's not. "Nobody wants a work stoppage in baseball. Not the players, not the league." Seriously? If they think a work stoppage can ultimately make them more money, you better believe the league wants a work stoppage. It's just a business to them. They don't care one iota if 162 games get played or not, just as long as they max out their revenues.

When Manfred said he wouldn't leave the clubhouse I'm surprised Harper didn't reply, "okay, then I'm leaving". I get it, you then lose the opportunity to hear and rebut his arguments in person, but you told him to leave and he wouldn't. And now you're just going to accept his refusal? Are you also going to accept the cap too when he says no to you saying you don't want it? No, you prove to him then and there that you're going to walk out if you don't get what you want. I'm glad he spoke his mind, but if you tell some to get lost and then they refuse, you can't just be like, "oh, okay then".

There was also this story in the Athletic about it. I like DeRosa, but he should stay far far away from these meetings. He has no business being in them and it's only going to anger a bunch of people he shouldn't. Everyone knows he wants to be an MLB manager one day, he doesn't need to be making himself an enemy of the players.

I'm surprised the MLBPA hasn't told its players not to accept these meetings. Do they figure doing so will make them look bad? If that's the case, okay, but then demand that you have one of your best people also in those meetings. It's like being charged with a serious crime and being told it's okay to talk to the prosecution without your own attorney present. It's just not wise. But who knows, maybe they do have one of their own in those meetings and they talk to them right after.

That is very cool. The way the bullpens are arranged at Camden Yards was conducive to him yokking it up with his former bullpen buddies.



But business is business. Sure enough, he pitched a scoreless inning in the second game and struck out two of his erstwhile teammates.

Has this ever happened before? The only similar incident that I could find was this chestnut of MLB history:

On August 4, 1982, Youngblood became the only player in MLB history to get hits for two different teams in two different cities on the same day. Youngblood started the day as the starting centerfielder for the New York Mets on the road in Chicago against the Cubs, who played all their home games in the afternoon at that time due to Wrigley Field having yet to install lights. In the third inning, hitting off future Hall of Famer Ferguson Jenkins, Youngblood drove in two runs with a single. He was on deck in the next inning when he was called back to the dugout, where he was informed he had been traded to the Montreal Expos. Not only had he been traded, but the Expos had requested Youngblood make himself available for their game later that evening in Philadelphia as they were particularly short handed on players. After saying goodbye to his Mets teammates, checking out of his hotel room in Chicago, and then having to return to Wrigley Field to retrieve his fielding glove, Youngblood boarded a 6:05 PM flight from O’Hare International Airport and landed in Philadelphia approximately ninety minutes later. He reached Veterans Stadium, where the Expos were playing the Phillies, during the sixth inning; Expos manager Jim Fanning called on Youngblood to pinch hit shortly after his arrival. Facing another future Hall of Famer in Steve Carlton, Youngblood reached on an infield single when Manny Trillo could not field the ball cleanly. No one has accomplished this feat since.

I guess some unusually high bets were placed on two pitches Ortiz threw far out of the strike in June. I guess Ortiz and Clase are pretty close friends.

Clase was named in a trade deadline rumors, but I guess that's not going to happen now.

There have been a few cases of players being traded between games of a doubleheader and switching clubhouses. The most famous was when the Cubs traded Max Flack



…to the Cardinals between games of their Memorial Day twin-bill on May 30, 1922 and received Cliff Heathcote in exchange.



Both played for their new team in the second game. What made Youngblood's "two games for two teams in two cities in one day" jaunt so memorable was the travel.
