If the Marlins played the Rays, and nobody was there to see it, did then the Marlins really play the Rays?

You got me curious. 20,000+ on a midweek afternoon game. Not bad.

The true rivalry week is when the Jays come to Seattle. The whole city is killed with filthy Canucks and everyone is just TOO NICE to not throw hands and/or maple syrups

And speaking of rivals, the Angels now have a 14% chance of making the playoffs, which constitutes the only way they’d be able to get Ohtani to stay. And also they just went over the luxury tax so they won’t be able to afford him as a triple-dipper next offseason. Keep doing what you’re doing, Angels! (except pls don’t make the playoffs and just implode)

It was hard to believe that Ohtani threw his first MLB shutout only yesterday. Then I remembered what era we are in: The Era of Pitcher Babying. Come to think of it, though, as a genuine two-way player, Ohtani may be the only pitcher who deserves a bit of babying.

Has Ohtani said winning will be a factor in his off season decision?

As much of a pox as Beer League rules were, there were a couple of seasons there where Shohei only needed to go seven innings to record a "complete game" or a "shutout". Are you saying he never did?

Huh.

When I checked yesterday it was something like 15 shutouts and 22 complete games.

...for ALL of MLB this year.

MLB attendance is up nearly 9% league-wide, marking the biggest year-over-year increase since 1998 and the Home Run Race.

Quote:
With the 2023 MLB trade deadline just a few days away, the league is in the midst of its biggest attendance increase in 25 years. MLB attendance is up close to 9% for the 2023 season, according to The New York Post's Jon Heyman.

A 9% rise in MLB attendance would be the biggest jump since the 1998 season. Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa famously generated renewed interest in baseball as they chased and ultimately shattered Roger Maris' single-season record of 61 home runs.

There's no evidence that any single factor has directly contributed to increased MLB attendance. It stands to reason that the new rules, implemented at the start of the 2023 season, have played a significant role.

I would say five out of the six divisions being close (three games or less separating second place from first) as well as five teams being three games or less out of the last wild card berths have a lot to do with it.

Looking at Baseball-Reference's attendance data, the big improvement is Philadelphia, up some 10,918 per game compared to last year. Even Kansas City and Oakland are up (273 per game for the former and 785 per game for the latter). The big losers in attendance are Detroit (down 553 per game), Washington (down 1,081 per game), and the Chicago White Sox (down 3,712 per game).

The overall attendance is averaging 28,676 per game through July 27th, That is still well below the 32,696 per game high reached in 2007,

I think the increase in attendance has more to do with the end of COVID than the rules, which apart from the pitch clock are mostly awful. That and the races, as said above.

Wholly depends on whether the Rangers have another shortstop prospect we can bury behind the nine figures owed to Frankie "Thumbs Down" Lindy while retaining enough of his salary to match the annual budget of Guinea-Bissau..........
