So they decided to end the "Golden Goal"? I didn't like it anyway. What is sad is that I didn't find out until Ghana scored and they kept playing.

I think they can win it also. But Germany has a tough road. England, Argentina, and probably Spain just to get to Brazil? Geez!

I'll be rooting for Spain but I believe it will be a Brazil/Germany WC again.

My final 4 prediction is Brazil/Ghana and Spain/Germany

I ROFL'd at this. Yes, this did get eliminated from the rules in 2004.

Interesting that the FIFA president has apologized for the refereeing at the World Cup.

Heh!

After the USA and Spain I usually default to rooting for any Spanish team. But now I have to hope Japan wins because they should have had a penalty kick.

WoW it's worse than I thought. I watched the entire 2006 world cup and didn't know it was gone? Or I just forgot.

You're not the only one. I wasn't aware of when that particular rule was done away with either.

Yeah, I watched it. Zzzzz...

Exciting shootout (penalty kicks), tho', and a heartbreaker. I was pulling for Japan.

YES! I was praying it went to PKs just to salvage the 2+ hours I spent watching two teams that could not string 2 passes together. A horrible game.

That is it for Paraguay.

Heartbreaker it was...

It must have been a horrible, unentertaining game for anybody other than Japanese and Paraguayan, but that's how the games are usually in the world cup, except for a few exception. (Games that involves teams like Brazil, Spain, Holland...)

It was a huge step for the Japanese side, and I am already looking forward to going to some of the J-League games!

Actually I enjoyed a lot of games in this cup that did not include just the best teams. But there were worse games than this.

The real sad part about the Japan loss was that a Japanese player was taken down at the top of the box and no foul was called. Should have been a penalty kick.

Paraguay remind me of Steau Bucharest when they played Barca in the European Cup (Champions League) they start with the intent to get to penalties and win that way, a negative team that really haven't canged through the years imo. Bit like the poor mans Italy of South America.

I think that's very unfair; Paraguay had 18 shots on goal (6 on target), Japan had 16. Not every 0-0 draw is because of negative football, sometimes it just turns out like that.

I agree not all 0-0 games are negative games, I've seen a few good 0-0 games but that wasn't one. Haven't seen every game but the only game that was worse than that one was the Brazil v Portugal game.

I agree with both of you. Both teams were trying to get to the quarterfinals for the first time; with the world watching. Sure, it didnt turn out to be a breathtaking display of technical football. But both teams were trying as best they could.

But Paraguay has been notorious for doing that in the past. I remember that game several cups back against Brazil when Paraguay had that goalie....Chilavert.

Now granted the game against Japan wasn't as obvious as that game or what Argentina did in the 1990 cup, but it did look as if they were playing for the shoot out.
