Cooperstown has now surged ahead of Valois in the East, while Bellaire lost eight in a row in the West, leaving Racine and Bethel Park far ahead of everybody else. The East is much tighter than the West, but the West is definitely the better conference overall.
LEAGUE NEWS June 17 - Worcester shortstop Jose Sena walks four times in a game (a record). Bethel Park short starter Rudolph Errico tore his rotator cuff and will definitely be out for the season. He had a 2.74 ERA in 76 innings (14 GS). June 19 - RF Bobby Brace of the Fontana Greyhounds tore his groin muscle while running the bases. He's out for about five weeks. June 20 - LF Jim Kahle of Atlantic City wins Eastern Conference POW for a .474 average and 7 RBI in 19 AB. 1B Christopher Seldon of Corvallis wins the award in the West, hitting .478 in 23 AB with 3 HR and 8 RBI. Atlantic City ace Mike Hanham pitches another shutout, this one a three-hitter against Cooperstown. June 24 - Bellaire suffers a double whammy. LF Jason McCall pulls his ACL while running the bases and will not play for another four weeks at least. Defensive backup catcher Wael Tewfik is injured in a collision at the plate. X-rays reveal a broken hip, and he is gone for the season. Justin Jackson and Jeremy Freeman will apparently be called back up to replace them. June 25 - CAREER-ENDING INJURY. Today is a sad day in baseball. Treasure Valley reliever Jason Fletcher has been diagnosed with a torn back muscle after he collapsed in a game against Fontana. It's unlikely that he will ever be able to play again. Fletcher was a submarine pitcher who kept the ball down and usually enjoyed pinpoint control. In recent appearances, he has struggled with his control, perhaps due to some nagging ailment. He logged 48 innings already this season and was 2-3 with 2 saves and a 5.66 ERA. June 27 - 3B Chuck "Cannon" Mathews of Cooperstown wins the EC POW, batting .480 in 25 AB with 3 HR and 8 RBI. CF Bryce O'Houlihan of Fontana wins the WC POW, batting .455 with 10 RBI in 33 AB. Riverman starter Marcos Cueto pulled his bicep tendon and will be out about four weeks. July 1 - EC Pitcher of the Month is Ben "Reverend" Alford of the Legends, who went 3-0 in 4 GS with an 0.88 ERA! Another Legend, OF Charlie "The Mayor" Smith, wins the EC Batter of the Month award, hitting 34-for-100 with 9 HR and 22 RBI. Two Racine Gladiators take home the WC monthly awards: pitcher James Gardner (1-0 in 6 GS, 1.19 ERA) and 1B Mark Earles (.386, 101 AB, 10 HR, 28 RBI). |

LEAGUE NEWS
July 4 - EC POW: Evan Horowitz of Atlantic City, who pitched 14 innings, going 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and 10 K's. WC POW: Mark Earles, Racine's starting first baseman, who batted .444 in 18 AB with 3 HR and 7 RBI. Earles is the first player to win two POW awards. The second-place Bethel Park Blackhawks suffered a serious blow to their title ambitions when their would-be-All-Star third-baseman Peter Dorosh ruptured his MCL, putting him out for the rest of the season. The 26-year-old Dorosh has hit .276/.333/.555 in 283 AB. July 6 - Lou Gehrig helps Valois down Wantagh 12-1 by going 4-for-4 with a walk, two homers, three runs scored, and four RBI. July 10 - Worcester leftfielder Brian Fish sets a record by stealing four bases in a single game. July 11 - EC POW: 1B Lou Gehrig of Valois, who went 12-for-24 with 4 HR and 9 RBI. WC POW: LF Tyler Leet of Nicholasville, who went 8-for-20 with 4 HR and 9 RBI. |

League website updated!
The dog days of summer are half over, and the pennant races are starting to heat up. In the Eastern Conference, the Vipers lead the Legends by a half-game, but the Jokers are lurking just five games back. The Hillies have the worst record in the league and may have to look to next year for redemption. In the Western Conference, the Gladiators have opened up a five-and-a-half game lead over the Blackhawks, with the Rivermen coming on strong at 7.5 back. My Longhorns have now fallen below .500. The Stars occupy the cellar. If Pythagorean records are anything to go by, the Gladiators are doing better than they ought, and might fall back soon. The Rivermen and Greyhounds may be ideally positioned to make a surge forward. LEAGUE NEWS July 16 - The longest game of the year (5:16), as the Wallbangers outlast Cooperstown, 5-4, in 14 innings. Each side uses seven pitchers as it was a bullpen duel from the seventh on. Keith Henglein hits the game-winning single for Wantagh. July 18 - EC POW: Paul Woodworth, Valois. He won 2 games, pitched 14 innings with an ERA of 1.93, fanning 6. WC POW: Octavio Bautista of Racine. He won one game, pitched 13.1 innings with an ERA of 2.03, fanning 9. Gary "Bullet" Molinaro, usually ineffective, pitches a three-hit shutout of Bethel Park on the road for Treasure Valley, striking out nine. Scott "The Thoominator" Thumann of Atlantic City was injured while pitching. He is diagnosed with bone chips in his shoulder and will be out for eight weeks. He is 5-10 with a 5.48 ERA this year. Vamsi Nalam of Corvallis will be out three to four weeks after pulling a tricep muscle in the first inning of a start against Fontana. He is 6-4 with a 4.50 ERA this year. July 20 - The Greyhounds beat the stuffing out of the Bellaire Longhorns, 19-3. Jason Sorens takes the loss after leaving the game with tenderness in his elbow, but the real damage came in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings, when the home team put up 14 runs on four doubles, eight singles, and five walks. Player of the game is leadoff hitter Scoop Thom, who goes 3-for-5 with 5 RBI. In other news, closer Jeremy Martin of Nicholasville is diagnosed with an inflamed tricep muscle and should be out for about three weeks. He is 1-2 with a 3.26 ERA and 11 saves. July 21 - Jesse Bowie of Utica, one of the best pitchers in the league, hurls a two-hit shutout on the road against Pittsfield, striking out eight. July 22 - A wild one between the Gladiators and Greyhounds. In the first inning, the visitors from Racine put up nine runs on the board, knocking out two pitchers. The Fontana starter, Ridge Casper, failed to get a single out while yielding five earned runs on four hits and a walk. Then Fontana came storming back, and Gladiator starter Delmer Heitmann, usually effective got just one out before being yanked. It was 9-5 after one inning. In the fifth inning, the Greyhounds came back and put up a "6" spot, to gain their first lead of the game, 11-10. They did it with back-to-back homers from Remington Poe and "Kong" Chaney, as well as a subsequent series of singles. In the seventh, the Gladiators regained the lead, 12-11, and then in the bottom of the ninth the Greyhounds tied it back up, touching up Racine closer Christopher King for a run. In the top of the tenth the Gladiators put up three with the help of a two-run double from Pedro Baston, and that 15-12 score held. Each team used 21 players, everyone but the off-day starters. The player of the game was 1B Mark Earles, who went 4-for-5. In other news, reliever Joe Henry of Worcester has ruptured a disc in his back and will definitely be out for the season. He is 2-6 with a 3.73 ERA. July 24 - The Worcester Knights hammer the Valois Vipers, 18-1. Amazingly, the Vipers make it through the game with just three pitchers. Mike "Klinger" Klingaman, a guy who's rarely made it five innings in a start this year, yielded seven runs, all earned, over four innings. He was relieved by "Cheatin' Eddie" Cicotte, Valois' closer, who also yielded seven runs, six of them earned, hurling 71 (!!) pitches. "Bullet Joe" Rogan then came in to give up the last four runs. What's even more amazing is that Cicotte pitched on six consecutive days, this day being one of them. It will be a wonder if he doesn't blow out his arm. Valois fans would be calling for Aethelstan Irbit's head if he didn't have them in the division lead. July 25 - EC POW: 1B Lou Gehrig of Valois, for the third time. He batted .412 in 17 AB, with 3 HR and 6 RBI. WC POW: 1B Christopher Seldon of Corvallis, batting .476 in 21 AB with 1 HR and 6 RBI. July 29 - Gary Molinero of Treasure Valley strains his tricep muscle in the sixth inning of a loss to Corvallis. He is out for about four weeks. He is 4-13 with a 6.00 ERA this year. July 31 - John Ollendahk of Cooperstown, one of the best pitchers in the league, hurls a three-hit shutout on the road against Worcester, striking out nine. August 1 - EC POW: 1B Pete Kahle of Atlantic City, who hit .355 with 11 RBI and slugged .677 in 31 at-bats. WC POW: C Neil Sorens of Bellaire. He batted 9-for-20 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. EC POM: Mike O'Donnell of Pittsfield. He had a record of 3-0 in five games started, with an ERA of 1.96 and one shutout. EC BOM: Lou Gehrig of Valois. He batted .447 in 85 AB with 12 HR and 25 RBI. WC POM: Adam Wing of Corvallis. He had a record of 0-0 in 3 games started, with an ERA of 0.68. WC BOM: 1B Scott Spencer of Fontana; he batted .370 in 92 AB with 6 HR and 22 RBI. |

I accidentally simmed a month this time!
Oh well, with none of the teams on human management, I suppose it makes no difference at all. Anyway - league website updated!(The following paragraph is edited; I must've been looking at some outdated standings before!) The Western Conference is definitely turning out to be the stronger as the pennant stretch sprint begins. Five Western teams are above .500; only two Eastern teams are. Racine now seems less dominant, and is in a horse race with Bethel Park, with Corvallis and Fontana well within striking distance. Even Nicholasville could win the West. Valois is now starting to pull away in the East; Cooperstown needs more offense to get back in this. Lou Gehrig is now running away with the Eastern Conference Triple Crown. It isn't even close. Joe Wing of Corvallis approaches a similar level of pitching dominance in the West, except that he doesn't have the endurance of league leaders in innings pitched. Also, he's been BABIP-lucky so far, I think. LEAGUE NEWS August 2 - 18-year-old All-Star pitcher Anatoli Dorosh (9-10, 3.79) suffers a herniated disc in his back; doctors are perplexed at this particular injury in such a young player. Nevertheless, his team, the Blackhawks, will have to do without him for five weeks. August 5 - John Ollendahk (11-6, 2.65) goes the distance for Cooperstown against Utica. A solo homerun by Luke "Mouth" Mathews is sufficient to seal the win, a 1-0 shutout. August 8 - EC POW: SS Todd Neuman of Pittsfield. He batted .500 in 24 AB, with 1 HR and 7 RBI. On the season he is .276/.356/.443 with 13 SB. WC POW: RF Matt Chatham of Bethel Park. He batted .381 in 21 AB, with 3 HR and 13 (!!) RBI. On the year he is .283/.359/.472. August 12 - Joker rightfielder Mark "Mayhem" Madden creates a little mayhem against the Knights. He went 3-for-4 with a walk and two homers, scoring four runs and driving in five. Atlantic City beats Worcester, 15-5. August 13 - Treasure Valley reliever Mike Evanick (4.62, 12 SV) ruptured an elbow ligament. He is out for five to six weeks. August 15 - EC POW: 1B Lou Gehrig of Valois, who went 15-for-25 with 4 HR and 5 RBI. WC POW: RF George Pennell of Bellaire, who hit .522 in 23 AB with 1 HR and 8 RBI. August 22 - EC POW: CF Ron Smith of Cooperstown. He batted .435 in 23 AB with 2 HR and 8 RBI. WC POW: RF Matt Chatham of Bethel Park. He batted .440 in 25 AB with 3 HR and 10 RBI. August 25 - Greyhound reliever Harvey "Doc" Holiday (2-5, 7.02) gave up an unearned run in a loss to Wantagh, but that was hardly the worst of it, as he left the game with severe pain in his shoulder. X-rays revealed the presence of bone chips, which will have to be removed surgically. He might be back for the playoffs if Fontana pulls a miracle and makes it to the postseason. August 28 - 19-year-old Worcester catcher Matt Karchner has an outstanding game against the Rivermen, throwing out a runner while allowing no steals. At the plate, he goes 3-for-4 with a walk, 2 homers, 3 runs, and 5 RBI. Worcester is victorious, 11-2. August 29 - EC POW: SP Mike "The Mechanic" Hanham of Atlantic City. He went 2-0 with a 1.29 ERA and is 3.34 with a 10-9 record (175 IP) on the year. WC POW: 1B Mark Earles, who batted .476 in 21 AB with 4 HR and 14 RBI! August 31 - Bob Stackow, Pittsfield's speedy, light-hitting secondbaseman, fractured his hand on a Jason Sorens fastball. He'll definitely be out for the month of September. On the bright side, Pittsfield downed Bellaire, 7-2. September 1 - EC POM: Sterling Edwards of Cooperstown. He won all three starts this month, with an ERA of 1.71. For the year he is 5-4 with a 3.07 ERA in 73 innings. EC BOM: 1B Lou Gehrig of Valois. He batted .442 in 102 AB with 8 HR and 24 RBI. Absolutely unstoppable. WC POM: Brian Curtice of Bellaire. He went 4-0 in five starts, with an ERA of 1.54. He is 9-7 with a 4.30 ERA for the year. WC BOM: Matt Chatham of Bethel Park, who hit .304 in 92 AB with 8 HR and 29 RBI. C'mon Cooperstown, dammit! We may have to find a new manager.
I can't believe how well Edwards is doing. The stars of my rotation are not exactly who I pictures. |

Yikes, my brief analysis was all screwed up; I was looking at an outdated version of the standings, apparently! I've edited that now (above).
Some of the performances have indeed been unexpected. I'm scratching my head over Leonard Ledford, Nicholasville's ace. He has a talent rating of five in Control (performance rating of 14). But he's given up just 74 walks in 163 innings and is second in the conference in ERA (2.26). Curious... I think the West is going to get even tighter. Fontana has come from a long way back, and I think they will contend for the title. They are just monstrous offensively. They have little range on defense, but don't make errors. That seems to have been the way to go. They could dominate this league for years. I don't want to write off Racine and Bethel Park, though. Or Corvallis for that matter. Their pitching is insane. They've spread the starts around, but I see ERAs of 1.95, 2.71, 2.57, 2.09, 2.03, and 1.56 among some of their most active pitchers. One of the mistakes I made with my team was that I made my #2 starter 43 years old (now 44). OOTP has been harsh on his talent this season. Last edited by Elendil; 04-18-2005 at 08:35 PM. |

Better 13 hours late than never...
![]() League website updated! Does anyone have any objections to my simming to the end of the regular season tomorrow? That will allow the owners to do any tweaking they would like before the playoffs. Valois is maintaining its lead over Cooperstown in the East so far. In the West, Bethel Park has stunned Racine to retake its early-season lead. Both Valois and Bethel Park now enjoy magic numbers of 13 over their nearest rivals. Atlantic City, Fontana, Corvallis, Nicholasville, and Bellaire are approaching mathematical elimination, while Worcester, Wantagh, Utica, Pittsfield, and Treasure Valley are thinking about next year. In the Triple Crown watch, Gehrig maintains leads of .029 in BA, 7 in HR, and 21 in RBI. He also leads all Western Conference players in these categories. Thom (NIC), Earles (RAC), and N. Sorens (BEL) are the strongest contenders for BOY in the West. In POY watch, Wing (COR), Conkling (RAC), Ledford (NIC), and J. Sorens seem like the main contenders in the West, with Ollendahk (COO), Harrison (COO), Hanham (ATL), Henglein (WAN), and O'Donnell (PIT) battling it out in the East. LEAGUE NEWS September 2 - Worcester fans are concerned for the future, as 20-year-old ace Joe Fish tears a muscle in his back. He has gone 9-12 with a 3.43 ERA in 189 IP this year. We all hope he recovers without side effects for the start of next season. September 3 - Two remarkable games today. In the longest game of the season, the Vipers come back to tie Wantagh with three runs in the bottom of the ninth, and the two teams then play seven scoreless extra innings before the Wallbangers plate a run in the top of the 17th. They close it out and come away with the 6-5 win. Luckily, rosters have just expanded, and the teams are able to use a combined twenty pitchers in the game. Box score. In the other wild one, the Pittsfield Hillies drive home ten runs in the first two innings against Worcester, and beat back the Knights' middle-innings surge to win 17-12. The home team squander their offensive resurgence with sloppy play in the field: the Knights make six errors. Worcester third baseman Brian Trostle has made an obscene 45 errors so far this year. (As of 9/16, it's now an even more obscene 50!) September 4 - Bethel Park LF Duane Palmer bats in six of his team's seven runs as they down Utica, 7-3. He did with two HR's and and two singles. The Wallbangers and Vipers play an unbelievable second game in their unbelievable series. This time they go fifteen innings before Valois gets the final word this time, beating Wantagh 4-3. This game had another seven-inning scoreless stretch from the 8th through the 14th. This time the teams combine to use "only" sixteen pitchers. Box score. September 5 - 3B Rob Letendre of Pittsfield wins EC POW, hitting .385 in 26 AB with 2 HR and 9 RBI. LF Duane Palmer of Bethel Park wins WC POW, hitting 10-for-20 with 4 HR and 11 RBI. September 6 - Treasure Valley starter Gary Molinero had an unusually great outing, shutting out the Wallbangers on three hits, with seven K's. September 8 - The Rivermen and the Blackhawks go thirteen scoreless innings before Corvallis scores in the top of the 14th. They win it, 1-0. Kip Carlson (COR) and Anatoli Dorosh (BTH) are the two starters who dueled for seven innings before handing it over to the bullpens. Box score. The next game will be nearly as thrilling, as Bethel Park will take revenge on Corvallis, 3-2 in 12 innings. September 10 - Atlantic City gets the better of Fontana in a big-time slugfest, 17-13. After four and a half, the Jokers had a 12-0 lead and just barely hung on the rest of the way. Box score. September 12 - 2B Mike Gordon of Worcester wins EC POW, hitting .381 in 21 AB with 3 HR and 7 RBI. CF Bryce O'Houlihan of Fontana wins WC POW, hitting an amazing .632 in 19 AB with 1 HR and 9 RBI. Jeremy "The Wicked" Tomasulo, the Atlantic City Jokers' flashy, speedy centerfielder, goes down with a torn groin muscle. He'll be out the rest of the year but should be fully recovered when spring training starts next year. |

End of the 2000 regular season
League website updated!
Two exciting pennant races came down to the wire. Cooperstown and Racine each surged to within a game and a half of the conference leads in September, but both fell short and were eliminated in the last week of the season. Atlantic City also made a late push but were eliminated on the penultimate day of the season in an 11-inning loss to the Bluesox. So it will be the Blackhawks versus the Vipers in the World Series! I'll be contacting woody5254 and Operation Shutdown to see whether they would like to take control of their teams before the series begins. We'll sim the series on Monday evening. LEAGUE NEWS September 19 - EC POW: 1B Efren Suarez (WOR), who hit 10-for-25 with 5 HR and 10 RBI. WC POW: RF Dalton Cole (FON), who hit .481 in 27 AB with 2 HR and 6 RBI. September 23 - "Red" Fredericks of Valois ruptures an elbow ligament in a loss in Atlantic City. It's not a serious injury, but he won't pitch the rest of the year. September 26 - EC POW: LF Brian Fish (WOR), who went 13-for-25 with 2 HR and 7 RBI. WC POW: SP Mercury Barstow (FON), who went 2-0 with an 0.61 ERA in 15 innings (12 K's). October 1 - EC POM: Alex Rosaschi of Wantagh, who went 3-0 in 4 starts, with an ERA of 1.30. He's recovered from his early-season woes and went 7-10 with a 4.27 ERA this year. EC BOM: Efren Suarez of Worcester, who hit .381 in 105 AB with 9 HR and 26 RBI. WC POM: Kip Carlson of Corvallis, who went 2-1 in 5 games started, with an ERA of 0.90. WC BOM: Michael Thom of Nicholasville, who batted .337 in 98 AB, with 6 HR and 22 RBI. October 3 - EC POW: SP Mike O'Donnell of Pittsfield, who went 2-0 in 14 innings with an ERA of 2.53 and 13 K's. WC POW: RF Matt Chatham of Bethel Park, who went 12-for-22 with 2 HR and 8 RBI. Lou Gehrig (.350/44/134) officially wins the league Triple Crown. We'll see what he can do against Bethel Park pitching. Last edited by Elendil; 04-22-2005 at 08:37 PM. |
