Think of a souped-up, modular version of FPSFB Pro. It's got the same look with the in-game screens, and you can set up pretty much any type of league you'd like. It's not released yet, but it apparently will be sometime in the near future (or at least relative to video game timelines).

That game looks fantastic. Bummer it's not out yet. Hopefully it won't be too long before we see it.

Division Rivals is still having a ways to go in its development curve, but its worth checking out, especially since the guys making it are major FPS FBPro fanatics

Football Sims

Another football simulation game that is worth a try is PC Action Football. The game offers current seasons and many past seasons from the NFL as well as many college teams. It offers the option of quick sims or playing every down or fast-forwarding to a certain point in a game. You can create players. It has a draft function for simulating a college draft with mythcal players that are rated. I would rate it as a 8 on a scale of 10 as far as realism. I haven't played extensively, but it is a quality game overall with the inevitable imperfections all sim games have.

Action PC has been discussed and has some merit, IMO the short-coming of the game is the weak career mode otherwise it is a pretty good game for strategy, etc.

maybe with the latest version, but anything 2003 or older is crap, IMO, for Action! PC.

For career - FOF combined with TCY (allows you to follow college players' complete careers before importing them into your pro league). Only drawback...lack of flexibility as far as league structure (you're limited to NFL-style 32 teams set up in two conferences of four four-team divisions).

For replay - probably Action PC. You can set up your leagues and schedules however you want. You can create or edit players. Drawback -- if you buy prepackaged past seasons, you can wind up paying quite a lot of $$$. I've heard some good things about 2nd & 10...but I haven't personally tried it.

For eye-candy - Right now, I'd give a slight edge to ESPN over Madden. It's close though, and Madden seems to let you customize a few more things than ESPN. Both games feature career modes. However, I find both rather tedious IMO.

Maximum Football -- It seems like I've heard this game hyped for almost five years now. Is the thing ever going to be released?

Total Pro Football

Has anyone tried the latest version (with latest patch) of Total Pro Football? Is it worth the 30 bucks? I read a review that claims the offensive stats are about 20% inflated compared to the NFL. Is it easy to create/edit teams and players to real NFL players/teams and are databases available?

Eagerly Awaiting Football Pro 98 in mail

Dead silence regarding Total Pro Football...which I did buy and am enjoying, although in very limited actual playtime so far.

After reading the glowing posts about Football Pro 98 by Sierra, I bought a copy on EBAY and am closely monitoring the mailbox for its arrival.

I downloaded the demo of Total Pro Football and played around with it for the last three days. Couple of things:

- Is it me or is the PBP flat and repetitive? "Screen pass to Brooks... And he's got 53 yards." I'm expecting a little more variety and more excitement.

- Is it me or is the play resolution wonky? I threw a crapload of screen passes and was routinely getting 10+ yards. Conversely, I'd get about 8 or 10 runs in a row that went for 1 yard or less.

- Is it me or is this software just a touch buggy? Draft picks would disappear and reappear. I could have sworn I set my depth chart only to tell me it wasn't. I have to re-pause the draft to get the draft going again. Only one lock up but a certainly a few hiccups.

- Is it me or does that game speed slider have a hair trigger? OK, this is a bit slow. I'll slide it over just ooooonnnnnneeee notch. Flash, flash, game over. Same thing with the draft.

- Is it me or did they do a great job on the draft? I love the presentation, the trading, the player pictures, the announcer, etc. The whole thing is done very well.

- Is it me or is this a dead game? I didn't see too many mods or leagues being played. I didn't see too much buzz on their board. Got the impression I was playing Ghosttown Pro Football.

I'm not too optimistic about the near future. Maximum Football seems to be VERY slow in coming and would have only a rudimentary career mode. Madden is essentially for joystick jockeys only.

Maximum Football is actually going to have a full-blown career mode, which is why it's been delayed until this fall. I'm not holding out serious hope that it's going to be the Holy Grail of football sims, but I still think it's going to be a good game.

Bobble,
Buzz on the board will continue to be minimal but Arlie surprised all by releasing a patch just the other day. I don't play the games out so the pbp gripes don't bother me. Just played through my first season (in about three months) and the offensive stats don't seem too bad to me but the LBs in this game seem freakish. They can get 154 tackles, 11 sacks, and 10 interceptions with some regularity. Love the draft and yes the game is a bit buggy but it is without question playable.

I'm torn. I like the game quite a lot for the management aspects. I could probably live with the bugs and shortcomings but -- surprisingly for a guy who drops a lot of money on games without batting an eye -- I'm having trouble convincing myself that this game is worth $35. $20, sure. $35 when I know Madden, Maximum Football, and whatever GreyDog cooks up are on their way soon? Seems like too much.

I just got FoF 2004 a few weeks ago...I imagine it's the best out there and I think it's well worth getting...at the same time, I think the genre still has some miles to travel to reach the OOTP/EHM/FM plateau. Maybe it's just because FoF still has that Windows 95 look to it....

I haven't played FoF since it's EA days. It seemed like a pretty decent game at the time, but I stopped playing it because I could never keep my drafted players for very long. I would sign them for 3 years for instance, the contract would be up and suddenly they all want to re-sign for $7 million/year despite their highest rating in any category being around 20 out of 100 and haven't ever started a single game.

I've heard good things about the 2004 version so maybe I'll give it another try.
