What's that? You have mountains of evidence of a different observational method to disprove me? That's poppycock. How many times have YOU watched the sun move around the earth, huh???
You know, Copernicus didn't come up with his astronomical theories by sitting in a cave doing calculations -- he looked through his telescope at the sky to see what was going on. I'm trying to be reasonable and civil here. We have a difference of opinion. You're not going to convince me you're right by attempting to insult my intelligence, and it's fairly clear I'm not going to convince you I'm right by any means, either.

Looks like anyone who said it was stupid to have A-rod at third was right. Though they did get past the Red Sox to win the east, it was obvious that if they had a better defense, maybe they could have gotten past the Sox to win the World Series. Maybe moving the Best SS in the game to short would have helped.

If you think the left side of the infield was the Yankees' problem in the regular season or in the ALCS, you were watching a different team than I was. Rodriguez, Jeter, and the Olerud/Clark combo were the only halfway decent defenders on the team. Cairo was atrocious, Matsui was atrocious, Williams was awful, Sheffield's shoulder was obviously hampering his fielding, and Posada had his usual problems blocking pitches. Meanwhile, Rodriguez played a pretty good third base, and Jeter played the best shortstop of his career. All in all, I would say moving Rodriguez to third was one of the few truly successful moves the Yankees made this season.

Ricciardi can't be faulted for a lot of the problems this year. But still, yes, my opinion of him has downgraded over time. His trading Phelps, how he's handling Delgado, and some other minor issues have been my beefs this year.

Someone around here posted that Jeter's defense was actually statistically above average this year and that only him and A-Rod could make that claim on that team. I'd imagine the logical conclusion is that SS wasn't their problem this year.

That was me Karros... and Jeter was actually just below average in terms of zone range and range factor (15th and 18th respectively out of the 29 starting shortstops with more than 50 games at short).

Here's the link:
http://ootpdevelopments.com/board/sh...290#post887290

And Mylons... I thought Matsui played well in Left. No, his range is weak... but I don't remember watching him or hearing about him misplaying many balls. In fact, I remember hearing that he was one of the few outfielders who actually hit the proper cut off man each play.

Jeter, on the other hand, I saw muffle quite a few plays at short.... some were called "hits," but a better shortstop would have had them.

Jeter's worth is in his ability as an offensive shortstop... defensively he is okay... the few runs he will cost you he will more than make up with the bat.

Matsui's a smart fielder, and doesn't misplay very many balls, but he has very limited range, and lets a lot of balls drop. He has an accurate arm, but it's very weak. I was probably overstating the case with "atrocious", but I think he certainly is a below-average left-fielder. It wouldn't be so bad if Williams weren't a shadow of his former self in center, but at this point anything hit to left center is going to drop with those two in the field.

Yes... on that we both agree. If the Yankees can sign a center fielder with some range they'll be better off.... I wonder if there is a good young center fielder with a solid bat and good range out there

I don't know, but, frankly, I'm not all that impressed by the defense of the one I'm pretty sure you're thinking of.

Since they were the AL East winners, you were right. People who picked the Braves to win the NL East in 2003 were right, weren't they?
