Here's the way I see it:

I'm a night owl. I'm usually up till about 2 or 3am CT. I don't have to perform my job duties until later in the day. If I was a normal 7-4 or 8-5'er, it would be a problem. It's spring. The only thing on TV for sports during the week is conference tournaments, the national tournament, spring training, the NBA, NHL, and MLS. I'm not a huge pro basketball fan and I watch March Madness because it's live sports during the day that has meaning. At this time of night it's west coast sports, then nothing.

Ok, I rambled and forgot where I was going with it. My thought now is that I can avoid sports pages and most likely game results from the early wee morning game when I wake up and watch it on a delay because nothing else is on. Which, this will last for four days in a sense (Pool A concludes Sat/Sun, Pool B on Sun/Mon)

Part of the reason why Cuba is allowing exiles to play because of their last two WBC appearances, they were manhandled in the Second Round. The question now becomes if they get out of pool play.

The Netherlands has finished higher than Cuba at the last two WBCs

That line is pretty fair

The Netherlands still have some possessions in the Caribbean. Lots of pretty good baseball played there.

Dutch take the opener 4-2. The ball at Intercontinental Stadium just DIES when you hit the ball hard.

Yeah, no offense, but you’re going too far with this. I know that France considers anyone who is a citizen of the colonies they didn’t release to be a French citizen and I’m pretty sure the Dutch treat Arubans the same. If these people from Caribbean islands are Spanish citizens then why wouldn’t they compete for Spain?

Nice to see Ruben Tejada had a good day as Panama beat Chinese Taipei. I always liked Ruben Tejada.

No pitch clock, shift limits for 2023 World Baseball Classic. This is the best part. And no, Bru, I'm not mad the Phillies lost. Sorry. Very proud of them.

Well I didn't think I'd see Cuba washing out of this pool but they're going to have to beat Panama and Taiwan and hope for help? Italia and Netherlands (Antilles) will have them in a tiebreaker now.

I almost talked myself into using frequent flyer miles to go to Taiwan for that pool, and after seeing their crowd for their game against Panama I'm sorry I didn't Only 6,000+ for Italia-Cuba but that's still pretty good for two teams with not very many local fans.

We can't just call them Taiwan? The Taipei name is just to appease China.

I was going with what's on the scoreboard. It's not a fight I am in need of picking.

So? In my own conversations I am going to refer to CT as Taiwan.

I always rename them to Taiwan in my games but in all fairness their sports teams have been known as Chinese Taipei since 1981 so not a new thing.

Cuba trounced Panama (sniff!) to stay relevant in Pool A.

NED 2-0
ITA 1-0
CUB 1-2
PAN 1-2
TPE 0-2

With Italy narrowly leading Chinese Taipei right now, Cuba would need to beat the Taiwanese *and* have the Netherlands or Italians have to lose both of their remaining games just to get even.

Since head-to-head record would be the first tie-breaker, that wouldn't even be enough for Cuba. They'd need Panama to also close out at 2-2 for a three-way tie where everybody's 1-1 against another.

At least that's as far as I have understood this. No guarantees. Don't make silly bets based on my waffling.

Well Team Italia did their part Looks like the end of the pitching bench is pretty rough. I haven't seen the highlights yet but the crowd must have been bananas. Italia v. Netherlands will clear up a lot I think, and Taiwan controls their own fate. 4 game pool slates are brutal if you lose more than once!

I was actually wrong with putting the host team at 0-2 there. They're now 1-1 and leaped all the way into a Ticket to Tokio spot.

NED 2-0
TPE 1-1
ITA 1-1
CUB 1-2
PAN 1-2

Mercy! China (the big one, not ... not the little one) first team eliminated from the tournament in a 7-inning, 12-2 rout by Australia.

JAP 2-0
AUS 2-0
CZE 1-0
SKO 0-2
CHN 0-3
