I get it, but this type of thought is condoning fights. The possibility of being outnumbered should be the last thing the league considers in this situation.

I have to agree that some threads in general have turned quite nasty for reasons only people who post in OT would know. Hopefully people relax a bit, and soon

Haha wow tempers are flaring over this sox and angels fans must have their keyboards out in full force.
As someone who also played the game the reason why I have to side with Abreu and condone the angels for coming out is simply because I know that if a guy threw 90 miles accident or not right for my head, I'm livid and the rest of my team should be as well. This isn't a guy skating or running around out there giving "cheap shots", it's a 90 + mph ball coming at you that could potentially be deadly so yea I think they have every right to be upset. As far as Beckett being in the wrong I'll just say however suspect it may be, his first reaction was to leave the mound and go toward home. Beckett was pissed it's evident and he was in the wrong, six games/one start is fair and everyone is happy. Beckett really is a hot head, I think he even tried to start a fight with Ryan Howard a couple years ago in Spring Training, but I have to admit I like that in a pitcher. |

I think what he means is that the Umpire didn't have to grant Abreu time.

So what? There's still nothing that says he has to call it if the batter asks for it.

I'm sorry, I watched the game and the replays and this is how it looked to me. Beckett obviously is overly concerned with figgins at second, beckett starts his delivery, time is called, the ball whizzes by. Abreu throws his arms up. Beckett asks for a ball inching closer to hear what Abreu is saying. Beckett then starts jawing at Abreu. Benches clear. Scioscia goes ballistic. Justin Speier shows what he is made of by constantly yelling at the red sox from the comfort of his own dugout.

In this situation, with the amount of time that Beckett had been paused...it was absolutely the right decision by the umpire to grant it IMO.

Just reciprocating. I know you're not a fan of getting what you give, but most times in life it's how it works. In your world, of course, someone questioning you or proving you wrong is abuse. An odd way to live, but whatever suits you.

I am sure that the league questioned the umpires before making their decision on the suspension.

I think baseball should implement a rule where umpires are required to call timeouts anytime a batter calls for it, but if there's no obvious reason for him to call timeout (i.e. an equipment problem or an injury or something) then he should be penalized a strike. The constant granting of timeouts is something umpires didn't start doing until relatively recently (i.e. the past 30-ish years) and it totally destroys the flow of the game. There certainly need to be rules of some sort requiring pitchers/hitters to play the game instead of dallying about inbetween pitches constantly.

The calling of time outs is what it is. It should be changed. There is no reason for the amount of timeouts many batters are calling in the current "era" of baseball.
That said... in this instance... Beckett could have easily throw the pitch down the middle of the plate instead of at the head of a guy that was outside of the batters box. The location of Beckett's throw was uncalled for. Beckett had a case to be "angry" for the LATE time out call, but by throwing where he threw it, he created the escalation. THEN he added fuel to the fire by walking towards home plate for no other reason than to argue with batter. I'm a Red Sox fan WAY before the Angels. Short of my home town (of 30 years) Mariners... the Red Sox are my second favorite team... but Beckett put on a complete display of stupidity. His six game suspension is basically (as a starting pitcher) 2 game suspension in reality... so it's not that drastic. The days off in between starts he never would have entered a game anyway. Beckett had a right to be slightly upset at the late time out call... but be a man and deal with it. Throwing at the head of the batter, in a place your catcher had no chance of catching, was completely uncalled for and then approaching home plate with your mouth jawing and your finger pointing is asking for trouble from the umpire OR league office. Beckett got what he deserved. Last edited by snnort; 04-15-2009 at 04:37 PM. |
