1984 European Champs Preview

October 28th 1984 - Interest in baseball is at an all-time high in Europe and fans across the continent are all looking forward to the first ever European Championship in the sport.

Experts have predicted that the winners will come from a group of 6 favourites - Spain, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Russia, Belgium - but it promises to be a wide open tournament with only a few teams not really in contention (England, Switzerland, Poland).

The most intriguing squad in the eyes of this reporter are the boys from Ireland. They have a superb starting rotation - Malcolm Kennedy (Paris), Alois Maloney (Amsterdam), Steve Moynan (Moscow), Bart Taft (Oslo) - and if their hitters can overcome a lack of depth, they look good to go a long way in the tournament.

Other than injuries, there are not many big names who have missed out on places in their national squads. The two names worth noting are Penn Heldt, who didn't make the German squad despite winning 12 games for the EBL champion Brussels Hitmen and 14 game winner, Stuart Seaward (Dublin), who is kept out by the aforementioned Irish rotation strength.

France Are Champions Of Europe

December 31st 1984 - France have beaten all teams in their path to claim the first ever European Championship. The Frenchmen started the tournament hot winning 15 of 18 games and even though they cooled off a little bit, they were still in very good form by the time the knockout stages came around and they recovered from a 2-0 hole to beat Austria 4 games to 2 in the final.

Hmm. Amsterdam can't win when it counts, just like the Dutch national soccer team.

Funny, Spain was quoted as one of the favourites and performed well below expected... feel a dejà vu here (well, except this year, of course).

Nice writing... one of my all-time dynasties here

1985 Preview

March 31st 1985 - Only a few notable trades in the offseason.

Vilheim Bogedal has left Milan to join Helsinki. The Mud Cats got starting pitcher Karel Grau in return.

Adrian Sandrakos, the 1982 EL Pitcher of the Year has been traded from Budapest to Hamburg, with Oktav Grillparzar going the other way.

Also playing for another team will be 3-time Glove of the Year award winner Erem Erkal, who has left Glasgow to play for the Barcelona Iguanas.

There is a buzz around the league about the young players who were stars at the European Championships, but who have yet to prove themselves at the EBL level. Riso Eckhel is slated to be the opening day pitcher for Barcelona despite his 7-13 record in 1984. Pauli Erstweiler and Kanitzar Bugajski shouldn't be in AAA much longer (for Copenhagen and Oslo, respectively). If they are, expect multiple teams to come knocking with offers.

The Paris Cyclones will be hoping that they can carry the momentum of the French national team into the new season. They started 1984 very well but fell away badly and are one of only 3 EBL teams yet to make the playoffs (Moscow and Lisbon are the others).

The favourites for 1985 have to Brussels, Milan and Amsterdam again, whereas the whole of the Eastern League will simply be hoping that they can break their duck in the European League Series.

It's like it never really happened, a.k.a Corrupt game file being restored to last backup.

So, just to clarify you are going to copy the league file, then create your teams with the rosters limited to national players only, then release all players and have a draft. Then once complete you will go back to the original file and continue your euro league from there? So, the original file will never actually have a Euro World Cup league, only the copy?

Correct.

My 'EBL' saved game has no history of the Euro Championships. I have a separate saved game called 'EC84' that will never be used again, only to reference what happened in the tournament. Then when I get to 1988, I plan to do the same again.

The one thing that I did do in my EBL game was edit the history of the players who made the EC all tournament team and who won the series MVP award so that I could see that at a glance. I also carried over any injuries that affected the 1985 season, but I did set injuries in the 'EC84' game to very low so that it didn't have too much effect.

Did you durn financials off in the "EC84"? How did the national teams pick the best players from that country? Was coaches/scouts turned off?

Yes, no financials in 'EC84'.

The AI did a pretty decent job of picking the best players to each nation after I had released them to the free agent pool. Coaches and scouts were on, although thinking about maybe they should both be off.

I had to disallow all AI roster moves for the EBL teams to ensure that they didn't sign any of the players.

Vienna 32 43 14 Budapest 25 50 19
Notes -

Hamburg started 11-1 and didn't really slow down. They lead the EBL in runs scored and runs allowed so far.
At the other end of the scale, Paris won 4 of their first 24 games (so much for the French momentum) and Budapest started 5-22.
Stockholm allowed two double digit innings in the first week of the season. Warsaw scored 11 in the 2nd on their way to a 18-13 win and Hamburg scored 10 in the 9th to win 13-5.
The biggest innings of the season so far was a 12 run effort by Brussels against the Glasgow Stallions on April 8th.
There has been an 18 inning game (Helsinki v Prague) and a 17 inning game (Budapest v Copenhagen).
The first ever EBL Champions, the Vienna Armageddon, fired their GM on May 8th as they fell out of contention.
Berlin had a 10-1 run in May and Milan won 16 out of 19 to take control of their division.
Oslo won 17 out of 19 to move closer to the Heat. Sofia, whilst still in contention, have struggled in June to fall back a bit.

Player Notes -

There was a great pitcher's series between Lisbon and Dublin in April. After a close first game, Juan Sanchez (Dublin) pitched a no-hitter to win the second. Then young Scotsman Archie MacClements (Lisbon) responded with his own no-hitter the very next day.
The back-to-back no-hitters slightly overshadowed Panos Metrofanis' (London) one-hitter against Madrid on the same day as the Sanchez game. Metrofanis was recognised by the league as the Pitcher of the Month for April with a 6-0 record and a 1.33 ERA.
Warsaw SP Adrien Pierre hit a Grand Slam, his first ever home run, in the 11 run inning mentioned above.
Unsurprisingly both of the EL awards for April went to Hamburg players. Ned Zijm was 4-0 for the month with a 1.44 ERA and Dolf Pellenaars hit .322 with 6 homers.
Claudio Lwenholm (Amsterdam) was the WL's Hitter of the Month for both April and May. At the All-Star break he his hitting .376 with 17 HR and 73 RBI.
Ivan Santrac (Sofia) and Harlan McRea (Amsterdam) both hit for the cycle on May 6th. McRae has a 25 game hit streak going at the present time.
SP Rory Begley (Warsaw) pitched 31.1 consecutive scoreless innings between April 27th and May 12th. He then pitched a no-hitter versus Prague on June 16th.
The Pitchers of the Month for May were Malcolm Kennedy (Paris, WL) and Justino Junqeiro (Warsaw, EL). Junqeiro is a reliever, who won 4 games and saved 6 more in the month.
Francis Gautier (Sofia) was the EL Hitter of the Month. He is one of two hitters who are threatening to hit .400 on the season. He is at .402. The other is Milan's Philippe Martin, who is hitting .396 thus far.

Significant Injuries -

Hans Hamsun (Copenhagen) was injured in the first few days of the season and will not be able to play for the rest of 1985. He hit 28 HR in 1984 for the Armada.
Hamburg's Nunzio D'Elia has missed 2 months with a fractured cheekbone.
Jeirgif Izvekov (Budapest) strained a hamstring running the bases and missed 5 weeks.
Glasgow 3B Michael MacKinnon missed 4 weeks with a hand injury.

Notes -

Copenhagen won 20 games in July and also had a 12-3 run in August to keep close to the Hamburg Heat and pretty much secure their playoff spot.
Milan were the first team to 100 wins, but they took their foot of the gas and Hamburg overtook them for the best record in the EBL.
Stockholm actually had a winning September to avoid joining the 100 loss club.
Budapest and Moscow played a game that was scoreless after 14, then both teams scored in the 15th. The Smoke finally won it 3-1 in 19 innings.
Amsterdam and Prague won on the last day to keep London and Warsaw out of the playoffs. The Crocs lost 6-3 to Paris to negate any chance they had.

Player Notes -

Urbanus Fuerst (Athens) and Lorenzo Gutierrez (Vienna) both had cycles in the second half of the season.
Berlin SS Luis Diaz had a 6 for 6 day in his team's 9-8 win over Prague on June 29th.
Twelve different players won the monthly awards. The hitters were - Max Sabin (Milan), Bruce Smith (Dublin), Philippe Martin (Milan), Jacquy Gilbert (Hamburg), Paulo Simon (Athens) and Holly Connich (Warsaw). The pitchers were - Gerd Buchert (London), Emanuel Biancardi (Amsterdam), Michal Slimak (Milan), Rory Begley (Warsaw), Alexis Martin (Copenhagen), Klement Follerup (Moscow).
Slimak won the August WL award after being traded from Copenhagen to the Mud Cats in July. Copenhagen were busy in the trade market as they powered through the second half of the season. They acquired 1B Rudolf Tuhina in the Milan trade and CF Emilio Zamora and SP Gaspar Kertesz in further trades with Madrid and Moscow respectively.
Kaspar Ahlmann (Berlin) had the best pitching performance of the second half with a two-hitter against Helsinki. He struck out 9 Diesel batters as the Dragons won 4-0.
Glasgow's Constantino Deodato has signed an extension to keep him in Scotland for two more seasons and to make him one of the highest paid players in the league in the process. He will earn $4.1M per year in the deal.
One EBL star who won't be on show in the playoffs is 2-time WL Pitcher of the Year Nike Rousakis. After a horrible start to the season, the 30 year-old has been sent down to AAA Manchester by the Milan Mud Cats and is not included on their playoff roster.

Significant Injuries -

Lisbon's poor second half can, in part at least, be attributed to the injury suffered by C Fernao Espinhel. He fractured an eye socket in early July and missed the rest of the season.
RF Miguel Barella (Athens) will be out for 12 months with a fractured cheek suffered when he was hit by a pitch.
Milan's Dennis Frangopoulos missed 6 weeks towards the end of the season with a knee injury. He will be ready to go for the playoffs.

Career Leaders

November 1st 1985 - Every decade (years ending in a 5), I will publish a list of the career leaders in the major categories.

It might not mean a lot after only 5 years of the league, but the league's trailblazers deserved to be remembered.
