Colin Cowherd: A Laugh a Day

Colin Cowherd is basically an "FM Shock Jock" who happens to be on a Sports Talk Show. He has zero knowledge of sports and will say whatever he thinks will anger the most people and get ratings. I stopped listening to him a long time ago.

ESPN has the monopoly on the market. Fox Sports is giving their half-assed effort to put a "product" on TV with their regionalized coverage. Fox has an amazing concept, but does it completely wrong. Fox needs to up the ante a little, and create a National Sports channel, that is in contrast to ESPN. Steal some rights, ESPN has the stranglehold on most major licenses, NBA, MLB, NFL, NASCAR, Collegiate Sports, even Bowling and Fishing. Comcast is giving an effort as well to start a sports TV franchise. Outdoor Life Network was rebranded as OLN, a "sports network". Which I am devestated because ESPN dropped hockey, because of ratings, and OLN scooped it up, and I strongly dislike OLN's coverage.

To stay on topic with the radio, I dislike Rome. He is a little too egotistical for my tastes. Cowherd doesn't bother me all that much, and most times I find his rhetoric a little entertaining. Dan Patrick was a great show I looked forward to on Wednesdays when I started school at a later time, and was able to hear the show on the way there. But that was when Rob Dibble was there, just to keep Dan in check.

That's not true at all - he doesn't rip on "everybody". The only time he rips anyone is when they do something to deserve it, like Leonard Little killing someone because he was DUI and then getting another DUI after that. I've never heard Rome bash anyone for no good reason.

Cowherd, on the other hand, seems to live for bashing people out of spite. He's awfully big-mouthed for someone who's lied about graduating from college.

See, I'm OK with Rome. I know that he comes off as abrasive and arrogant, and the shtick is probably well past its time (especially since Rome is on the wrong side of 40 now). That said, the interviews are consistently good, and occasionally the non-sports aspects of the show (the emails, clone phone calls, the border wars, etc.) are hilarious. And what most perceive as arrogance, I simply think is tongue-in-cheek. I don't think he's serious about his smack - I think it's just the way he wants the show to go. The talk about the "Jungle Karma" and things like that - I don't think he actually takes any of it seriously.

Plus, even for a guy who gets paid to speak, Rome misspeaks less than anyone else I've ever listened to. He always seems to know what he wants to say before he says it.

Fox will not be the future competition to ESPN. Comcast is planing to completly overhaul OLN to become a more balanced sports network. They will probably change the name and eventually aquire rights to either baseball or football somepoint down the road and they may become a player. This could easily happen if ESPN continue to become more and more crap.
