Yeah...how could they have so little a clue as to sit a .729 OPS the final month to play a guy with a 1.085 OPS?

Mets pick up the option on Trachsel, but decline on Looper and Mientkiewicz.
Agree on all three counts. GH |

Mientkiewicz burned his bridges here with some quotes last week. I was happy to get him here but he was a huge disappointment. He burned bridges with the Twins, Red Sox and now the Mets. Hey look...Dougie finally went 3 for 3! |

MLB.cm and the Daily News are reporting that Alay Soler is finally coming over to the Mets. Not that's he's needed at the moment, but sounds like good trade bait. . .
or more likely since he's a Duquette signing, he'll be superfluous. . . Furcal coming over to the Mets, though, as a 2nd baseman, sounds fascinating. The big question, though, is how much is he worth? I guess $8 is fine, since that's how much Kaz Matsui's making, but no way he deserves the 4 year $40 million that Renteria is making. Imagine: Lineup (not necessarily in this order) Furcal* Reyes Beltran Wright Konerko* or Jacobs Floyd (A good defensive catcher) or even Castro Cameron Rotation Martinez Glavine (I predict a good year for him next year, since he learned how to pich at Shea in the second half) Benson Trachsel Seo Bullpen Heilman Hernandez Padilla Ryan* in the pen I'm drooling. Almost literally. Last edited by Mycroft; 11-01-2005 at 08:12 AM. |

Doug left the Twins on bad terms...he criticized his manager, Gardenhire. He left the Sox on bad terms. Now it's the Mets. Doug sucked and he lost his job to another player and rather than just admit it and move on, he's blaming someone else. |

Allegedly, Trevor Hoffman is insulted by the Padres' offer and he's cleaned out his locker of everything. The Mets are likely to show interest, but I'd imagine Hoffman is not likely to move across the country at this point. He's also 38, seeking a 3-year deal at $25M-$28M.

So, what do you think the Mets interest in obtaining Zito is?
Personally, I don't think Z is gonna be on the market, but just curious to hear from Met fans. I'm sure at the least, a deal similer to the Hudson/Mulder deals would be required, i.e. ML ready player, ML ready reliever, and a high prospect.

Zito might be traded, but I can't really imagine him going to the Mets. Mets already have good pitching depth, have to improve, not trade away their bullpen and tend to get burned when giving away prospects. Hadn't even heard it was being considered. |

Word around my newsroom is that Wagner could be sealed up for the Mets days after the exclusive period (the 11th, I believe). Of course, NY media tends to think we'll get anyone we want, so we'll see.
I'm admittedly not sure if I'd take Wagner over Ryan at this point, but I'd surely take either over Looper. GH |

I think Ryan is a much better fit for the Mets than Wagner.
By which i mean, when Ryan 'screws up,' by which he'll either have a bad week or month (which is natural for a closer) all I'll have to hear is 'Man, we should have got Wagner,' rather than 'Wagner sucks, he isn't worth $10, let alone $10 million). With Mets closers, lower expectations are always safer. That way, there's actually a chance for them to meet or even exceed expecations. . . Which is why no one ever wants to play in New York .

Wagner will be great in 2006 but what about 2007 & 2008? I'd like to see the team built for next year without having dead wood down the road.
The relievers I want are: Ryan Farnsworth Scott Eyre |

Don't know much about Eyre, but I agree with Ryan and Farnsworth. Farnsworth has been a hard thrower who has the potential to be better than Wagner, at least that was my impression of him on the Cubs. Potential, mind you.
Meanwhile, hasn't everyone heard? The Mets are going to have a new network next year. What is this weird talk of 'building?' They definitely have a 'win now' philosophy. Oh and if the Mets are gonna thrown $10mil around, at least give it to an everyday player (Furcal) instead of Wagner. |

Eyre's a lefty for SF. He's done pretty well over the last few seasons averaging about a SO an inning. He can get righties out too.
Ryan L Farnsworth R Eyre L Padilla R Bell R Hamulack L I like the idea of a balanced pen behind a rotation that only has one lefty. I heard the Mets are really interested in Eischen but he's a LOOGY and Eyre may be a little cheaper. |

It would be very nice to have a reasonable closer again. I didn't like the idea of Looper closing when the Mets first got him, and my dislike of the idea only intensified. He's just not a closer, and I'm not sure how he even wound up in the role or who thought he should be.
I've been reading that the Mets may try to fill some holes by looking outside the US. Hopefully, if they do that, they'll have more luck than they did with Matsui.

So now the talk is:
Mets get Manny Red Sox get Cameron and 2 out of Milledge, Petit and Heilman. There's speculation Petit is ultimately going to fall short, but still, the system appears weak again, and weakening it further scares me. It's hard to pass on a player of Manny's caliber, but I must concede this deal frightens me as a fan. If you deal Cameron, Heilman and Milledge...that's a lot for a moody, poor defensive player whose OPS has slipped 3 straight years (though he's obviously still outstanding). I don't know...I just have my concerns. GH |
