2030 Beer League Playoffs: Milling Series

Two teams have made every Beer League post season (Weyerbacher and Russian River), and they also both represent the only two teams that have won the BCS (twice for Weyerbacher, once for Russian River). The other 8 teams seek their first ever championship.

One team (Daft Badger) is making their first ever post season appearance.

#1 Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot (96-66; 11th post season) vs #4 WC Laughing Sun Red Dwarf (87-75; 4th post season)

With Triple Crown winner Danny Hooper taking the mound, Laughing Sun felt good about their chances to steal a game on the road to open their Milling Series; and for the first few innings he held Weyerbacher down while his offense staked him to an early 3-1 lead.

That would all fall apart in the fourth inning, when Blithering Idiot right fielder Adam Wilberding stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and proceeded to deposit a 2-2 fastball into the left field stands for a grand slam to give Weyerbacher a 5-3 lead. They wouldn't look back from there as they tacked on another 5 runs over the next few innings to cruise to a 10-3 game 1 victory.

2030 Beer League Playoffs: Milling Series - Game 1

#2 Charleville Half Wits (93-69; 4th post season) vs #3 WC Scorched Earth Giant Killer (88-74; 7th post season)

Scorched Earth got an impressive start from Bob Damron, who went 6.1 innings, giving up just 4 hits and no runs, with no walks and 11 strikeouts to shut down the Charleville offense. Reliever Jerry de la Rosa would come in to finish off the last 2.2 innings, giving up no hits, runs or walks, and 4 strikeouts as the Giant Killer claimed a 5-0 victory on the road to open the series.

#3 Daft Badger Hoppypotamus (91-71; 1st post season) vs #2 WC Tree House Tornado (88-74; 9th post season)

Fans of solid pitching were in baseball heaven with the Daft Badger - Tree House game as a grand total of 1 run was scored. Tree House came out on the winning end of the 1-0 win, as starter George Linley (6.1 innings, 2 hits, no runs, 3 walks, 5 strikeouts), and relievers John DuBose (0.2 innings, no hits, runs, walks, 1 strikeouts) and Garry Collette (2 innings, 1 hit, no runs or walks, 2 strikeouts) kept the Hoppypotamus offense off balance all game.

2030 Beer League Playoffs: Milling Series - Game 1

#4 Ballast Point Commodores (83-79; 7th post season) vs #1 WC Texas Leaguer Chin Music (90-72; 5th post season)

While Texas Leaguer is the wild card road team for this series, in reality, they come in with 7 more regular season wins than Ballast Point, so many odds makers have them with the advantage this series. The Chin Music jumped out to a quick lead with a run in the top of the first. In the second, leadoff batter Mark Stonecipher cranked a 3 run homer to make it 4-0. Another run in the top of the fourth would stake Texas Leaguer to a 5-0 lead. Ballast Point would begin to chip away with a run in the 4th, another in the 6th, one in the 7th and another in the 8th to creep within one run at 5-4. That would be as close as they would get as Texas Leaguer closer Greg Burkel would slam the door closed in the bottom of the 9th to secure the win.

#1 Jester King Das Wunderkind (101-61; 3rd post season) vs #4 WC Rabid Dwarves of Doom (82-80; 3rd post season)

Despite the daunting task of taking on 101 win Jester King, the Rabid pitching staff stepped up to the task and did their best to shut down the Das Wunderkind offense. Starter Mike Coffin only went 3.2 innings, giving up 2 hits and no runs with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts before turning things over to the bullpen. A merry-go-round of pitchers would step up, with Cody Gregory tossing 1.2 innings, giving up 2 hits and 1 run; David Giacalone going 1.1 innings, with no hits or runs; Rick Farland notching an out, and Juan Patino finishing off the final two innings to secure a surprising 3-1 victory for the Dwarves of Doom

2030 Beer League Playoffs: Milling Series - Game 1

#2 Smog City Sabre Toothed Squirrels (97-65; 3rd post season) vs #3 WC Russian River Blind Pig (89-73; 11th post season)

Some days it only takes one inning to make a difference, and this was one of those days. In the bottom of the 5th inning, down 2-0, Smog City second baseman Kevin Sibert stepped to the plate with 2 runners on and hit a blistering drive down the right field line to pick up a 2 run triple to tie up the game. The next batter, designated hitter Juan Rivera promptly ended that tie with a 2 run homer to give Smog City a 4-2 lead. Russian River would cut the lead in half with a run in the 6th, but that would be as close as it got, as closer Jim Stamey would shut the door and seal the 4-3 victory for the Sabre Toothed Squirrels

#3 Three Floyds Apocalypse Cow (92-70; 6th post season) vs #2 WC Red Rock Elephino (93-69; 5th post season)

Three Floyds starter Ben Troyer was on top of his game to open the series, tossing a solid 5 innings, giving up 2 hits and no runs with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts to hold the Red Rock offense in check. In the bottom of the 5th, Three Floyds finally broke through on the offensive side, scoring 5 runs to break the ice and grab a 5-0 lead. Another run in the 7th would be more than enough as the Apocalypse Cow would claim a 6-2 victory

#4 Toboggan Lunatic Fridge (82-80; 8th post season) vs #1 WC Sleeping Giant Beaver Duck (94-68; 5th post season)

Toboggan came out of the gates flying as they put up 4 runs in the bottom of the first to grab a 4-0 lead. They wouldn't look back from there as the Lunatic Fridge cruised to an 8-2 victory to open their series.

#1 Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot (96-66; 11th post season) vs #4 WC Laughing Sun Red Dwarf (87-75; 4th post season)

Solid pitching from Weyerbacher starter David Blackwelder (6 innings, 3 hits , no runs, 2 walks, 7 strikeouts) and relievers Dave Salazar (1 inning, 1 hit, 1 strikeout) and Burt Connolly (2 innings, no hits/runs/walks, 1 strikeout) kept Laughing Sun off balance and off the bases most of the game. For offense, a single stroke was all that was needed as light hitting Blithering Idiot short stop Johnny Summers cranked a 3 run homer in the 5th inning to put up the only runs of the game; as Weyerbacher claimed a 3-0 win and a 2 games to none lead

#2 Charleville Half Wits (93-69; 4th post season) vs #3 WC Scorched Earth Giant Killer (88-74; 7th post season)

Once again, Charleville struggled to find their offense as the Scorched Earth pitching and defense kept them off the scoreboard for most of the game. It wasn't until the bottom of the 7th when right fielder Brian Latham hit a solo home run that the Half Wits picked up their first run of the post season. For the Giant Killer, designated hitter Steve Hardin (2-for-4, 1 RBI) and left fielder Matt Lindsay (1-for-3, 2 RBIs, 1 run scored) put up all the offense the team would need for a 3-1 victory to take a 2-games to none lead as they head home for game 3

#3 Daft Badger Hoppypotamus (91-71; 1st post season) vs #2 WC Tree House Tornado (88-74; 9th post season)

Daft Badger catcher Jarod Nico swung the hot bat in game 2, going 3-for-3 with 2 runs scored to help lead his club to an 8-5 victory to tie up the series at 1 game each

#4 Ballast Point Commodores (83-79; 7th post season) vs #1 WC Texas Leaguer Chin Music (90-72; 5th post season)

Strong pitching from Texas Leaguer starter Chris Brennan (8.1 innings, 3 hits, no runs, 1 walk, 5 strikeouts) and closer Jerry Mason (0.2 innings, 1 hit) was more than the Commodores could handle as the Chin Music claimed a 2 games to none lead in the series with a 6-0 victory in game 2

2030 Beer League Playoffs: Milling Series - Game 2

#1 Jester King Das Wunderkind (101-61; 3rd post season) vs #4 WC Rabid Dwarves of Doom (82-80; 3rd post season)

Hoping to avoid an 0-2 series hole, Jester King looked to their big bats to wake up and put up some runs. Under normal circumstances, the performance of left fielder Nate McBride would have been exactly what the doctor ordered (3-for-4, 4 RBIs, 2 runs scored) to account for over half of the teams 7 runs for the game. Unfortunately, the Rabid offense was up to the task, as they jumped out to a 5-0 lead before Jester King could get on the board. The game would extend to extra frames as Jester King fought back to tie the game at 5-5; but in the top of the 11th, the Dwarves of Doom would push across the go ahead runs and make that stick to claim a 7-5 win and a shocking 2 games to none lead.

Rabid center fielder Alex Avalleneda had the timely hits for the club, going 2-for-6 with 6 RBIs and 2 runs scored to power his club to the win.

2030 Beer League Playoffs: Milling Series - Game 1

#2 Smog City Sabre Toothed Squirrels (97-65; 3rd post season) vs #3 WC Russian River Blind Pig (89-73; 11th post season)

Trailing 6-1 heading into the late innings, the Blind Pig were hoping for something to spark their club to life to avoid falling into an 0-2 series hole. Left fielder Randy Campbell would answer those prayers when he cranked a 3 run home run in the top of the 7th to cap off a 4 run outburst to pull within a run of the lead at 6-5. Smog City would tack on a run in the bottom of the frame to give themselves a little cushion at 7-5. The Sabre Toothed Squirrels felt good about their chances as they sent Beer League legend Jim Stamey to the mound to close things out. Russian River wasn't intimidated though as they proceeded to score 4 runs off Stamey to grab a 9-7 lead. That lead would hold up as the Blind Pig escaped with the win and a 1-1 series as they head back to the Pig Pen for game 3.

#3 Three Floyds Apocalypse Cow (92-70; 6th post season) vs #2 WC Red Rock Elephino (93-69; 5th post season)

Red Rock first baseman Bobby Valdez could do no wrong at the plate in game 2, as he went 4-for-4 with 2 runs scored and 2 RBIs as he led his club to a 4-1 victory in game 2. The Elephino pitching staff held Three Floyds to just 3 hits to do their part in the win. The series is now tied 1-1

2030 Beer League Playoffs: Milling Series - Game 2

#4 Toboggan Lunatic Fridge (82-80; 8th post season) vs #1 WC Sleeping Giant Beaver Duck (94-68; 5th post season)

One swing can make all the difference. In game 2 between Toboggan and Sleeping Giant, that one swing came early. Lunatic Fridge slugger Dale Beauvais stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first with the bases loaded and slugged the first pitch he saw over the center field fence for a grand slam to give the team a quick 4-0 lead. Another run in the bottom of the second extended the lead to 5-0. That would be more than enough for Joe DePriest and the rest of the Toboggan pitching staff as the would claim a 5-3 win and a 2 games to none lead in the series.

#1 Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot (96-66; 11th post season) vs #4 WC Laughing Sun Red Dwarf (87-75; 4th post season)

It's win or go home from here for Laughing Sun, and a little home cooking appears to be what they needed. Shortstop David Williams (2-for-3, 2 runs scored, 1 home run, 3 RBIs), and second baseman Dustin Rafferty (2-for-4, 3 runs scored, 1 RBI) led the charge as the Red Dwarf picked up their first win of the series 10-1

2030 Beer League Playoffs: Milling Series - Game 3

#2 Charleville Half Wits (93-69; 4th post season) vs #3 WC Scorched Earth Giant Killer (88-74; 7th post season)

After losing both games at home to open the series, Charleville hoped a change of venue would wake up their anemic offense (1 run scored in the first 2 games). Game 3 remained scoreless for the first 4 innings as neither team showed any cracks in their defense. In the bottom of the 5th, that all changed as Steve Hardin cranked a solo homer for Scorched Earth for a 1-0 lead. The Giant Killer would proceed to load the bases with the next three batters, and then third baseman Ryan Vance would crank a bases clearing triple to pad the lead to 4-0.

Charleville's offense would finally wake up in the top of the fifth as they would roar back with 5 runs of their own, capped off by a pinch hit 3 run homer from Alexis Alvarez. Each team would tag on another run as Charleville avoided elimination with a 6-5 win
