Maybe (just maybe) this will cheer you up...

From Sportscenter...

The Bears held the Vikings to fewer points in the two games this past season than the Twins scored in the last two games of this season.

I wonder if Grossman can throw a curveball.

Did you know that Nick Masset has allowed a .963 OPS so far this year?

The good news: Buehrle shut down the Twins, and the Sox won 3-1.

The bad news: The contract talks appear to have broken down.

Quote:
Buehrle's side suggested a new structure, without a blanket no-trade clause -- a four-year, $56 million deal, and if Buehrle was traded, then a $17 million player option for 2012 would kick in. This way, if Buehrle were traded, then his deal would get closer to his current market value; five years and $73 million is equal to what Roy Oswalt got with the Astros last fall.
Does Kenny really want to keep Buehrle or not? I don't get it. I just don't get it.

Would anyone trade for a guy who gets a $17 million player option as soon as he shows up to play for your team? Of course, these are MLB owners we're talking about. I guess I just answered my own question.

Well, that's the Buehrle camp idea - it's not a full No-Trade Clause like he originally wanted, but it's certainly a trade deterrent.

If Buehrle stays healthy and effective (and signs point to yes, since has zero injury history and he's not a flamethrower), in 5 years, $17 million for a top-tier lefty could be a bargain.

Yeah, I hadn't considered that the $17 million would be more than five years from now.

No, this is just a ploy so Kenny can say, "We did everything we could to keep him." He has no intention of signing Mark and probably never did. The organization is a freaking joke and nothing has changed since winning the World Series. It is all just smoke and mirrors by KW.

It was just announced at the end of the broadcast of the game today that the Sox and Buehrle have agreed to a 4-year extension. I'm glad to see them finally get it done.

Well, there was that no-hitter.

And the Sox fired their head of amateur scouting.

But, yeah, it's all good.

So, while not a full NTC, it's an effective one. They can't trade Buehrle until after next season, and then there's a 20-month window before he's a 10/5 player and it's irrelevant.

As I mentioned earlier, this could still be an attractive contract to trade for, if it becomes necessary after the '08 season. 4/60 would be a good price for a proven lefty now, that will probably become a better looking contract in '09 if the Sox decide to deal him down the road.

Everybody wins for a change (except for the Twins who got beat in Javier Vazquez's second consecutive complete game)!

dola,

He's no Aaron Rowand, but I wouldn't say no.

Buried in that article was mention that Jon Garland had a knot in his shoulder, which may help explain his stinkbomb on Friday, but Coop says it's nothing to worry about.

Quote:
"Garland came into it a little bit," said Cooper of the final rotation decisions. "He was sore in his shoulder and stiff. He had that knot.

"Today he felt OK, so he's good to go," Cooper added.
Garland had spent the day before signing autographs at Taste Of Chicago, maybe that messed him up a bit. Nick Masset, however, just plain sucks.

Gavin Floyd was optioned back to AAA, which isn't much of a surprise since Buehrle re-signed.

There was also a section about Gio Gonzalez in an article on MiLB.com, which featured this tidbit:

Quote:
Gonzalez was not scheduled to pitch Monday night per Chicago's request.
Coincidence?

Apparently so, as the Tribune is reporting that the Sox have called up knuckleballer Charlie Haeger from Charlotte.

Haeger's been dominating AAA hitters to the tune of a 4-11 record and a 4.81 ERA, although he's brought that down from a 6.19 ERA over his last 5 starts. Presumably, he'll take on the bullpen role left open by Aardsma.

Man, I wish Haeger were in the Rangers system. I would love to watch him pitch in a Texas uni for the next 20-25 years.

I miss Charlie Hough.

Hopefully Garland pitches well tonight. I have them winning in a 4 team parlay (CWS, NYM, NYY, DET).

He's got no future as a starter, but might turn out to be useful, down the road, as a reliever.
