MODERN ERA UPDATE

DANCER JUST GETS BETTER WITH TIME
San Francisco - Giants pitcher Matthew Dancer made six All-Star games before this season. In his seventh All-Star season he earned his 200th win and managed to move himself to the upper echelon of award winning pitchers with his first Cy Young Award in 2020. Dancer, 38, shows no signs of stopping and with 218 career wins, Dancer might be prancing on a one-way ticket to Cooperstown if he keeps up his performance. "We're not going to think about that right now," said Dancer, when asked about his aspirations for Cooperstown. "When the time comes, I'll worry about all that." he said.

A-ROD'S RECORD IN JEOPARDY
With Wyoming's Darren Panglaet just three homers behind Alex Rodriguez's 759 homers for first on the Modern Era All-Time home run leaderboard, the 34-year old left fielder is preparing to go down in the history books. Fast on his heels is 27-year-old Minneapolis third baseman Lars Heinreich who slammed his 700th homer at the end of the 2020 season and is on pace to shatter the all-time homer record after hitting 700 homers in just ten major league seasons.

NIKOLANDIS WIN SIXTH STRAIGHT CY YOUNG
Move over Clemens, take a back seat Maddux and Steve Carlton, you're in over your head. The Greek God, Zeus himself has arrived in the majors. Yankees pitcher Kosta Nikolandis was named the Cy Young award winner for the sixth straight year. Nikolandis has established himself as the gold standard in the realm of Major League pitchers. In six and a half major league seasons, he has won 157 games and at age 31, shows no signs of stopping. He has won three World Series rings, two with Los Angeles in 2017 and 2018 and with Detroit in 2019.

THE WIZARD IS A STAR

BOSTON - Proving that his trade to Boston was justified, Red Sox leftfield Jesse Perrigo had a breakout year, belting over 30 homers and crushing 100+ RBI for the time in his major league career. "I'm thrilled to be at this point," said Perrigo, who hit .289 in the Red Sox post-season, helping the club win its first World Series title over 100 years. "We don't want this to be the first and last title this city sees for 100 years, we will be back," he said.

Perrigo is a career .267 hitter and with 66 career homers.

Minneapolis Lakers thirdbaseman Lars Heinreich is closing in on 800 homers for his career. He is second behind Wyoming's Darren Panglaet who has 793 career homers. Because Heinreich is seven years younger, there is little doubt that he will end his career with the most homers and might even close in on 1,000 homers before his career is done.

O's have a hot postseason

After winning the World Series in their first season in Montreal, the Orioles made a number of deals aimed at solidifying the club for the long haul.

"We were frankly unhappy with what we started the year with last year. We were able to shed a lot this offseason and that was our goal. We also picked up a lot of talent along the way and that was the ultimate goal."

Despite that, the team still has the highest payroll in baseball. Does Dark Cloud really believe this is the way to win a title?

"The way I look at it, the best teams will pay for the best talent. Is it my fault that we outspend teams by close to $70-80 million?[referring to the worst teams in the league] I don't believe it is. The Modern Era has done a fantastic job of revenue sharing and spreading the money around so teams have enough resources to compete. The fact is, a lot of teams would rather not prudently spend millions on subpar players. I don't blame them for that. Players get traded around a lot in this league, compared to the past too. But I think at the end of the day, teams need a mechanism by which they can do what's best for them and players. I think we've struck a balance," said Dark Cloud.

KOSTA HEADS HOME...TO MONTREAL
How do you pry a seven-time Cy Young Award winner away from a team in your own division? You don't. He pries himself away. At the end of the 2021 season, Kosta Nikolandis urged the Yankees to trade him. He forced their hand, much like Roger Clemens did to the Toronto Blue Jays - after a Cy Young Award season and ended up in New York. The difference is - Nikolandis spent his youth in Canada.

"I learned my craft in Quebec and I'm so thrilled to be able to go back home. I appreciate both teams working this deal out," said Nikolandis, who not only took a pay cut, but signed a deal that would keep him in Montreal for the rest of his career. "This is the closest to a hometown discount I can think of," he said.

Nikolandis was dealt for 35-year old SP Ajani Russell, a star in his own right who has 240 career wins and 20-year old future ace Ted Bucy. Bucy was originally drafted by the Yankees, before being dealt to Orioles for Yankees centerfielder Rigo Resendiz. So, they effectively traded Nikolandis for two front-line starters and a starting center-fielder.

Still, Nikolandis is the best player of this generation. He's closing in 200 wins, heading into his 9th season, has a career ERA under 2.00 and has led baseball in Wins, ERA and WHIP each of the last seven years. Funny enough, he does it without blowing people away. He's never been in the top 10 in strikeouts.

"What he does out there is amazing," said Orioles pitching coach Greg Maddux. "I love to watch him work."

After the sale of the New York Yankees to Jared Steinbrenner's OneCom Management, many expected the Yanks to go the way of his grandfather's Yankee teams - that is, to spend and get whoever necessary to win the games.

Jared says, "I don't subscribe to that school of thought. We're going to win games and bring this franchise back. But we're going to do it the right way, through the farm system and using our talent in the right ways," said Steinbrenner.

The Yanks have not won a World Series title in seventeen years, so the fans in the Bronx can be excused for being a little restless. Of course, their drought was nothing like that of the Chicago Cubs or Boston Red Sox, both teams who exorcised their deamons over the past ten years.

The Yanks sent seven-time Cy Young award winner Kosta Nikolandis to Montreal. Many criticized the Yanks move, but Steinbrenner defened it. "Listen, the guy wanted to play at home. He wanted to leave. We don't want players here who don't want to wear the pinstripes. He had a hell of a year last year, he did his job and we got a kid who not only wants to be here, but is probably the 1A pitcher in the league behind the guy we sent away. Oh and he's cheaper too," said Steinbrenner about Ajani Russell, who was part of the deal (along with Ted Bucy) that sent Nikolandis to Montreal.
