The Browns are looking for pitching--I've got a few prospects and younger players to offer (Jorgensen, McGregor, Horton). Send me a PM if interested.

1912 Amateur Draft
NO SURPRISE - YOUNT GOES FIRST
It was no surprise to anyone that the first player chosen in the 1912 Draft was young shortstop phenom Robin Yount. This is a player who possesses one of the best all-around skill sets to appear in BaTTY thus far. He can do it all - run, field and hit and is likely to make an impact right away. No surprise at all that the Cardinals tapped him first overall. But the rest of this draft was filled with talent. The Cincinnati Reds got themselves a franchise-level second baseman in Cupid Childs at number two. Some eyebrows may have been raised at the Highlanders' selection of shortstop Matt Williams at number three - with some obviously more talented players available. But Williams is a good choice - shortstops with his offensive skills are rare. He's no Yount, but should be a fine player. The outfield crop was loaded and picks 4 thru 8 were all outer pasture players. Joe Kelley (Athletics), Fielder Jones (Chisox), George Foster (Tigers), Mickey Rivers (Braves) and Joe 'Ducky' Medwick (Red Sox) are all difference makers. There was only one superior arm on the board, and he went at #10 - Bert Blyleven to the Phillies, rounding out the top ten after Brooklyn chose first baseman Alvin Davis - another solid player. Mike Andrews, Barry Bonnell, Doug Jones, Ike Brown, Jim Kaat, and Stump Wiedman comprised the back end of the first round. Complete draft results: Round 1: St. Louis (N) pick: SS Robin Yount Cincinnati pick: 2B Cupid Childs New York (A) pick: SS Matt Williams Philadelphia (A) pick: LF Joe Kelley Chicago (A) pick: CF Fielder Jones Detroit pick: LF George Foster Boston (N) pick: CF Mickey Rivers Boston (A) pick: LF Joe Medwick Brooklyn pick: 1B Alvin Davis Philadelphia (N) pick: P Bert Blyleven Chicago (N) pick: 2B Mike Andrews Washington pick: LF Barry Bonnell Cleveland pick: P Doug Jones New York (N) pick: 2B Ike Brown St. Louis (A) pick: P Jim Kaat Pittsburgh pick: P Stump Wiedman Round 2 : St. Louis (N) pick: LF Tommy Davis Cincinnati pick: RF Joe Lahoud New York (A) pick: P Tony Freitas Philadelphia (A) pick: P Steve Olin Chicago (A) pick: P Andy McGaffigan Detroit pick: P Ken Heintzelman Boston (N) pick: RF Tim Corcoran Boston (A) pick: LF Mike Young Brooklyn pick: P Socks Seibold Philadelphia (N) pick: P Chris Knapp Chicago (N) pick: P Scott Ruskin Washington pick: P Omar Olivares Cleveland pick: P Dixie Leverett New York (N) pick: RF Al Scheer St. Louis (A) pick: C Branch Rickey Pittsburgh pick: C Mike Diaz Round 3 : St. Louis (N) pick: 3B Al Gallagher Cincinnati pick: 3B Charley Bassett New York (A) pick: LF George Whiteman Philadelphia (A) pick: RF Leroy Stanton Chicago (A) pick: 1B Jimmy Wasdell Detroit pick: P Dave Sisler Boston (N) pick: RF Harry Niles Boston (A) pick: P Dwayne Henry Brooklyn pick: RF Billy Sunday Philadelphia (N) pick: P Roy Mahaffey Chicago (N) pick: RF Neil Chrisley Washington pick: LF Jack O'Brien Cleveland pick: SS Doc Lavan New York (N) pick: C Bruce Kimm St. Louis (A) pick: CF Erv Dusak Pittsburgh pick: 2B Al Newman Round 4 : St. Louis (N) pick: SS Felix Fermin Cincinnati pick: SS Johnny Butler New York (A) pick: RF Jerry Dorgan Philadelphia (A) pick: P Lowell Palmer Chicago (A) pick: 1B Larry Sutton Detroit pick: C Darrell Miller Boston (N) pick: 3B Charlie Barber Boston (A) pick: C Damon Berryhill Brooklyn pick: SS Gary Green Philadelphia (N) pick: C Jack Slattery Chicago (N) pick: LF Matias Carrillo Washington pick: LF Dee Brown Cleveland pick: SS Luis Ordaz New York (N) pick: C Marcus Jensen St. Louis (A) pick: C Mack Wheat Pittsburgh pick: 3B Clay Bellinger

August '12 Update
TWO HORSE RACES DEVELOP IN BOTH LEAGUES
It's looking like a two horse race in each league's chase for the pennant this season. In the National League with 96 of the 154-game schedule complete, we've got a flat-footed tie between the Chicago Cubs and New York Giants. Last year's juggernaut, the Pittsburgh Pirates are fourth, 11 games off the pace, and the fast-starting Boston Braves, who sat atop the standings on June 1, have dropped back to the pack and sit third, 9 games back. The Cubs feature one of the league's best pitchers in Warren Spahn who, at age 26, is coming into his own with a tremendous 20-3, 1.82 season thus far. New York's staff is anchored by John Wetteland, who has a solid 15-7, 2.05 season going. Both teams' offenses are led by strong hitting catchers: New York's Deacon White (.354) and Chicago's Jack Clements (.338). Over in the AL, the St. Louis Browns raced out to a great start, but cooled off in June and July and saw their lead shrink to a mere game over the Cleveland Indians. 39-year-old John Kruk isn't an everyday player any longer, but he is hitting .390 for the Browns, appearing in 68 of the team's 96 games. Francisco Cabrera is also hitting .390 in part-time action and the team's .294 average is the best in the league. Cleveland, as usual, is led by Dave Orr, who sits atop the batting leaderboard with a .373 average. The fact that Joe DiMaggio is pitching in with a .357 average and leads the league in homers (6) and RBIs (67) is icing on the cake for the league's second-best offense. Standings: Code:

End of Regular Season - 1912
CLEVELAND AND CHICAGO TO SQUARE OFF IN WORLD SERIES
The Cleveland Indians and Chicago Cubs will meet for the World Championship after outlasting very tough competition to win their respective leagues' pennants. The Indians found themselves looking up at the St. Louis Browns most of the season, finally passing the Brownies in September and finishing 94-60, two games ahead of St. Louis. The Cubs were in a tooth-and-nail battle with the New York Giants all season long, but put together the best record in baseball with 98 wins against 56 losses, while New York came across the wire with a 94-60 record. Cleveland featured the top two hitters in the league with Dave Orr (.365) winning another batting title and Joe DiMaggio (.350) finishing second. DiMaggio also led the league in doubles (46 - Orr was 2nd with 41), triples (13, Orr was tied for 3rd with 11) and RBI (108) and was second in homers with 9 to Boston's Fred Schulte, who had 13. The fearsome duo was ably supported by a corps of pitchers who featured three 20-game winners (Andujar, Aldridge and Hogan) and was third in BaTTY in ERA with a composite 3.03 ERA. The Cubbies feature better pitching than Cleveland, while their offense - while very good - is slightly worse than the Indians'. Chicago's Warren Spahn had a season for the ages with a 31-7 mark and a 1.85 ERA, making him easily the class of the league. Juan Pizzaro was 25-12, 3.03 and George Uhle also won 20, so the starters are a talented bunch. On offense, the Cubs are balanced with Don Hurst (.292-4-94) and catcher Jack Clements (.308-3-63, 75 runs) leading the attack. On the league leaderboards, the AL saw Boston's Fred Heimach notch 26 wins to top the loop, while Washington's George Van Haltren was the ERA champ with a mark of 1.74 for the Senators. Over in the NL, the batting champion was New York's Ross Barnes with a .328 mark (the lowest leading mark in BaTTY history). Chicago's Clements led the loop in doubles with 43 while Pittsburgh's star outfielder Sherry Magee led in triples (14) and was tied with Chicago's Ralph Kiner and New York's Woody Jensen for the home run lead with 7. Chicago's Hurst led the league in RBI with his total of 94. On the mound, Spahn was the leader in wins and ERA and was second to Pittsburgh great Jim Scott in strikeouts (378 to 369). For his part, Scott was 23-12 with a 2.30 ERA and his career ledger is 102-42, 1.87 for his four-year career.

Sunday 9/8/1912 : Luis Ordaz seems to have taken his game to the next level! Not a single rating or potential talent increased, but somehow he is at the next level

The Cubs are hoping to avenge their loss in the 1910 World Series to Cleveland.
Where is the "Bean Dave Orr" setting in this game? |

1912 World Series Update
CUBS AVENGE LOSS IN 1910, DEFEAT CLEVELAND TO WIN WORLD SERIES
The Chicago Cubs won the first two and last two games of a six-game series to defeat the Cleveland Indians and win the franchise's first World Series Championship. GAME ONE (WEST SIDE PARK, CHICAGO) - CUBS 2, INDIANS 1 Both Cubs' runs score in the second inning as Don Hurst doubles and scores on a Bobby Adams triple and Adams crosses the plate on, of all things, an infield single by pitcher Warren Spahn. The Indians get to Spahn (who was brilliant) in the eighth as his opposing pitcher Joaquin Andujar reaches on a one-out single. An error by Chuck Hinton pushes Andujar to second and he scores on a close play at the plate on a single by Wilbert Robinson. Spahn then buckles down and does the impossible - escapes further damage by striking out Dave Orr and getting Joe DiMaggio to ground to second. GAME TWO (WEST SIDE PARK, CHICAGO) - CUBS 2, INDIANS 0 The Cubs' pitching rules the day once again (not that Cleveland's pitchers haven't been good themselves). Cubs' starter Juan Pizarro spreads seven hits over the course of a complete-game shutout. His opposing number, Eddie Hogan, allows two runs to score in the first, but nothing further. The Cubbie runs came as a result of singles by Ralph Kiner and Jack Clements, with Kiner scoring on Don Hurst's single and then Hogan walking Dave Magadan with the bases loaded to force Clements home. GAME THREE (LEAGUE PARK, CLEVELAND) - INDIANS 6, CUBS 5 The Tribe gets back in the Series - barely - by dint of a two-run ninth inning rally to win game three by a thin 6 to 5 margin. With Vic Aldridge twirling for Cleveland and George Uhle for the Cubs, this set up as another pitcher's duel, but didn't work out that way. Aldridge himself started the offensive ball rolling, singling to start the home half of the third and then STEALING second and going to third when Clements' throw sailed into center. His own catcher, Wilbert Robinson drove him home a batter later with a single. After Dave Orr sacrificed (yes sacrificed!), Joe DiMaggio rifled a single into the gap, scoring two more. The 3-1 lead held until the fifth when the Cubs plated a run as Bobby Adams' triple scored Dave Magadan. In the sixth Clements redeemed himself with a two-run homerun to tie the game at three. A Magadan error allowed the Indians to surge ahead 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh. Kiner scored on a fielder's choice in the eighth to tie it again and the Cubs pushed a run across in the top of the ninth to go up 5-4 and sit on the verge of taking a three-games-to-none lead in the Series. With Scott Ruskin relieving Uhle, the wheels came off for the Cubs in the bottom of the ninth. Del Crandall was hit by a pitch and Joe Keough bunted his way on (both Crandall & Keough were pinch hitting). Jim Lefebvre singled to right, scoring Crandall to tie the game. After a walk to Robinson, who steps up but Dave Orr. Orr naturally comes through in the clutch, scoring Keough to give the Indians the needed victory. GAME FOUR (LEAGUE PARK, CLEVELAND) - INDIANS 9, CUBS 7 Well, the offenses really came to life in this one, a rematch of a fantastic game one pitcher's duel that was anything but this time around. After the Cubs scored one in the first off Andujar, the Indians took out their frustrations on Spahn to the tune of a four-run bottom half of the first. The Cubs whittled the lead away and surged into a 5-4 lead in the fifth, but that lead evaporated in the home half as the dynamic duo of Orr and DiMaggio promptly tied it up. Cleveland went up 6-5 in the sixth, but the Cubs plated two in the visitor's seventh to lead 7-6. That lead was also short-lived as the Indians pounded Spahn again for three more in the home half to give the game it's final tally of 9-7, and tie the series at two apiece. GAME FIVE (LEAGUE PARK, CLEVELAND) - CUBS 8, INDIANS 4 The bats remained active in the pivotal game five. The Indians took an early 1-0 lead, but saw the Cubs come back to lead 3-1 after two and 5-1 after three. Chicago plated three more in the eighth for a commanding 8-1 lead. The Indians gained some respectability by scoring three of their own in the home eighth, for the game's final margin of 8-4. Juan Pizzaro was the hero for the Cubs. Not only did he pitch them to victory with a complete game, but his bases-loaded double in the eighth scored the Cubs' final three runs. Gene Robertson was 4-for-5 with a couple of runs scored and driven home for the Cubs. GAME SIX (WEST SIDE PARK, CHICAGO) - CUBS 6, INDIANS 4 The Cubs completed their World Series victory with an exciting 6 to 4 win over Cleveland at home in game six. The Indians looked to tie the series up as they pushed ahead to a four-three edge after four innings, but the Cubs offense continued to punish Indians pitching and scored three decisive runs in the home eighth to take the victory. The winning rally saw Gene Robertson lead off with a double and move to third on a ground out by Bobby Adams. Pitcher George Uhle drove Robertson home with a single to knot the game at four. After Hinton forced Uhle at second, Kiner drew a walk which set the stage for Jack Clements' heroics. Clements doubled down the right field line to score both Hinton and Kiner for the final runs of the game - and series. Uhle pitched around a Dave Magadan error in the ninth to hold the Tribe down and give the Cubs their first title. Jack Clements was named Series MVP. He compiled a .407 average and tied with Magadan for the team lead in RBIs with 4 - all of them big runs coming on a home run and the series-clinching double in game six. Ralph Kiner hit .522 for Chicago. Cleveland was led by DiMaggio's .458 average and 4 RBIs. Orr, with one notable exception, was held in check by Chicago, hitting just .208 with a pair of RBIs.

Woo hoo! Cubs win! Cubs Win!
Congrats to Cleveland on a tough well-fought series. Though it gets disconcerting to see "A Dave Magadan error" in almost every game summary. Still - I'm pleased to have built a solid team - which considering the strength of the NL here - is vitally needed. Now - Harry Caray and I are going to celebrate
