defending champs off to a good start even though their manager is a dumba$$ who never changed back from the 3-man playoff rotation to the regular season 4-man one. every 4th day it's been a crap shoot who gets the start and the guy slotted in the rotation hasn't pitched an inning.

Not bad for the #2 pick in last draft, would you believe the Tigers are #1 in BA? I dont think I ever been higher than 8th in the history of the league. Now we need this aging pitching staff to do what they done for the last 10 years. |

Well - Both 1st round pick George Uhle amd 2nd round pick Chuck Hinton have made the starting line-up - and Uhle has picked up a nice boost in ratings - which looks good on him.
Poor Ralph Kiner - his ratings are finally starting to look good - but he's still struggling. |

August '11 Update
PIRATES ENJOYING HISTORIC CAMPAIGN
The Pittsburgh Pirates are on pace to post the most dominating season in the (albeit short) history of BaTTY. The Pirates currently own a won-loss record of 71 wins and 25 losses. That's not a typo: 71-25. Top pitcher Jim Scott? How's this for a season line: 23-2, 1.56 ERA - and there's still two months of baseball to go. Over in the AL, it's been an up and down fight between Cleveland and Boston - with Cleveland currently holding a four-game edge, though Boston had taken the lead in late June/early July. Don't count out the dangerous Browns (6 back) and Senators either (8 back) - those two teams have proven track records. Rookie Jim O'Rourke of the Tigers is tied with Dave Orr of the Indians for the batting title in the AL at .356, which is a good number, because it also leads the NL courtesy of Cincinnati's Glenn Wilson. What's a batting race without a Reds player at the top - even if its not Cap Anson? Scott is obviously, far and away, the pitching leader in the NL. The AL's top hurler is somewhat debatable. Old war-horse Matt Kilroy is tied for the league lead in victories with 15 - and now has 240 for his career. The guy he's tied with - Eddie Hogan of Cleveland - has a 73-69 career ledger. The ERA leader, Browns' pitcher David Palmer, is 14-8 with a 1.81 ERA, so he'd have to get the nod as the best hurler in the loop at the moment. Anyone ask about Fred Heimach? The Boston ace has a 2.89 ERA and a 10-8 record thus far, off his stellar pace from the past few seasons.

I am now hoping Kilroy age 34 sticks around another 2-3 seasons to have a shot at the real MLB record for the most wins by a lefty in the AL.
Eddie Plank 305 ... most in the NL by lefty Warren Spahn 363 It maybe a long shot but I think O'Rourke has an outside shot at our leagues record most HR in a season ( 14? ) he has 10 now. |

How in the heck do the Senators get to be minus-11 in pythag record versus real record?
Edit - well, 14-21 in one run games doesn't help. The bullpen is a combined 2-9. |

I just noticed we had three no hitters this season.
One by ole fart Killroy . Tigers still cant get it together. After 10 solid seasons of pitching we finnaly had some hitters on our club but the pitching fell off. I think our window is down to about 1-2 omore seasons before some major rebuilding is needed. |

1911 End of Season Report
PIRATES FINISH SEASON FOR THE AGES
The Pittsburgh Pirates ran through the 1911 season with nary a problem. The team finished with a 104-50 record, a new historical standard, eclipsing the former mark of 99 set by the 1907 Brooklyn Superbas. The Pirates also joined the Superbas as the only franchises to win the World Series more than once, as they swept the St. Louis Browns in four straight in the Fall Classic. Here's the roster and stats for the 1911 Record-Setting World Champions: Code:
Player # Pos Birthday Bats Throws AVG HR RBI SB OPS CATCHERS Roy Partee 0 C 9/7/1882 Right Right .305 3 41 7 .779 Tom Quinn 0 C 4/25/1879 Right Right .231 2 31 0 .574 INFIELDER Randall Simon 0 1B 5/25/1883 Left Left .322 5 61 9 .741 Junior Moore 0 2B 1/25/1878 Right Right .184 5 55 0 .490 Terry Pendleton 0 3B 7/16/1875 Both Right .264 5 74 13 .693 Dusty Miller 0 SS 9/10/1883 Left Right .284 5 57 0 .738 Buddy Kerr 0 SS 11/6/1877 Right Right .239 2 32 2 .654 Floyd Baker 0 SS 10/10/1879 Left Right .192 0 2 0 .608 Ed Cogswell 0 1B 2/25/1879 Right Right .247 0 8 0 .621 Mike De la Hoz 0 SS 10/2/1880 Right Right .167 0 1 0 .500 OUTFIELDER Sherry Magee 0 LF 8/6/1886 Right Right .337 3 64 1 .889 Henry Larkin 0 CF 1/12/1883 Right Right .292 4 93 27 .799 Merv Rettenmund 0 RF 6/6/1873 Right Right .303 1 75 24 .781 Duke Snider 0 CF 9/19/1887 Left Right .348 3 47 4 .876 Walt McCredie 0 LF 11/29/1879 Left Right .400 0 1 0 .900 Al Wickland 0 RF 1/27/1883 Left Left .370 0 3 1 .841 Everett Scott 0 LF 11/19/1885 Right Right .000 0 0 0 .000 Pitcher # Role Birthday Bats Throws ERA W L S WHIP STARTERS Jim Scott 0 SP 4/23/1884 Right Right 1.41 34 6 0 0.83 Rasty Wright 0 SP 11/5/1879 Right Right 2.38 24 14 0 1.00 Boom-Boom Beck 0 SP 10/16/1883 Right Right 3.75 16 10 0 1.34 Ed Lopat 0 SP 6/21/1884 Left Left 3.02 17 9 0 1.24 RELIEVERS Bob Sykes 0 CL 12/11/1884 Both Left 3.28 1 2 11 1.14 Tom Niedenfuer 0 MR 8/13/1888 Right Right 2.84 1 4 1 1.26 Brian Meadows 0 MR 11/21/1885 Right Right 3.05 11 4 0 1.21 Emil Yde 0 MR 1/28/1877 Both Left 3.00 0 1 1 1.58 Offense wasn't missing either. The Batter of the Year in the NL was Pirate outfielder Sherry Magee, who hit .337 to lead the league. The 25-year-old Magee has won the award both years he's been in the league. More frightening for opponents is that the Pirates offense was not at the top of the league, finishing no higher than 5th overall in any category - yet still won 104 games and has a very promising young player in Duke Snider who is likely to get even more playing time next season than he did in 1911 when he hit .347 in 201 at-bats. Over in the American League, Boston had a horrible swoon in August and fell to a .500 record for the season. The battle-tested Browns, owners of four previous AL flags, roared back to pass Cleveland and capture the pennant once again. Washington (90), St. Louis (93) and Cleveland (91) gave the AL three 90-win teams for the first time in league history. Cleveland's Dave Orr continues to prove himself one of the top hitters in the game, leading BaTTY with a .367 season average. But Detroit rookie John O'Rourke won both the Rookie of the Year and Top Batter Award with an extremely solid season. Granted at 30, O'Rourke is long in the tooth for a rookie, but his numbers were, without question, the best in the game this year. He hit .337 with 40 doubles, 18 triples and 13 home runs (just 1 shy of Bill Greenwood's record 14). He drove in 97 runs and scored 116 while drawing 106 walks. Truly a season for the ages.
