Well, I might as well throw in my opinion in an off-shoot way. Here are the teams for my Universal Baseball Association as it stands now, plus those cities favored for expansion in the coming years:

Washington D.C. (Washington Federals)
Newark, NJ (New Jersey Highlanders)
Staten Island, NY (Staten Island Stogies)
Brooklyn, NY (Brooklyn Excelsiors)

Portland, OR (Portland Pioneers)
Seattle, WA (my Bridegrooms got there before either the Pilots OR the M's)
Dayton, OH (Dayton Dragons)
Colorado Springs, CO (Colorado Coyotes)

Oklahoma City, OK (Oklahoma Haymakers)
Montgomery, AL (Montgomery Moonshiners)
Charlotte, NC (Carolina Grays)
New Orleans, LA (New Orleans Blues)

Austin, TX (Austin Rustlers)
Dallas, TX (Dallas Knickerbockers)
Albuquerque, NM (Albuquerque Keystones)
Hollywood, CA (Hollywood Stars)

and those up for expansion consideration:

Mexico City, Mexico (more than 7 million strong!)
Buffalo, NY
Indianapolis,IN :home of the Red Caps in my 1st UBA
Vancouver B.C. :home of the Quicksteps in UBA I
Memphis, TN
Birmingham, AL
Maui/Honolulu, HI
Salt Lake City, UT
Nashville TN :home of the Tip-Tops in UBA I
Omaha, NE
Grand Rapids MI
Jacksonville, FL
Orlando FL
Harrisburg PA :home of the Penn. Quakers in UBA I
Tacoma, WA : home of the Storm in UBA I
Wichita KS : home of the Spiders in UBA I
El Paso, TX : home of the Eclipse in UBA I
Tucson AZ : home of the Brown Sox in UBA I
Las Vegas, NV : home of the Perfectos in UBA I
Macon GA : home of the Wonders in UBA I

If you consider that baseball is an international sport, then consider:

Mexico City, or several others...there are 170 million Mexicans, the same number as Americans in 1950, and we had 16 teams then!

Seoul, Korea

Tokyo, or any of a bunch of different Japanese cities

Vancouver

In the US, consider:
Las Vegas,
Albuquerque,
Salt Lake City,
Virginia Beach,
Charlotte,
Birmingham,
Nashville,
Memphis,
San Antonio,
Buffalo,
Portland,
El Paso.

Moving one to Orlando from Tampa would seem reasonable...look at the demographics of population movement, south and west.

Here's something I posted the other day that might be helpful...

I decided to start up a fictional league and use a mixture of current MLB cities and new cities. Of course, the question then became where to find good population data. My first thought was the Census Bureau, and I found the page accessible through this link quite helpful. Its the Ranking Tables for Metropolitan Areas: Population in 2000 and Population Change from 1990 to 2000.

http://www.census.gov/population/www/cen2000/phc-t3.html

Look at table 3, metro areas sorted by population. Also, notice that New York and Los Angeles could support a 3rd, 4th, or 5th franchise more easily than most cities could even support 1, assuming that the ability to support a franchise is directly proportional to population, which isn't necessarily true.

[quote]You guys mentioning Memphis obviously know nothing about Memphis, Tennessee. The city SUCKS, the fan base isnt there for baseball on the major league level at ALL!!

I'll have whatever he's smoking. I don't see it happening anytime soon, as I think most everyone's happy to have one of the two or three best minor-league ballparks in the country and a team that draws very well every day, but Memphis would be a much better option than Nashville. Expandability of AutoZone Park from 14,000 to whatever would be needed is also a question. Either way, get over that inferiority complex. Neither city's getting an MLB team in the near future, but Memphis would probably get one before Nashville if they were both vying for one at this point.

I see the "next in line" cities as being Portland and Charlotte. Indy would also be a candidate, but like another poster said, their location hurts them.

Definately Portland. I would love to see the Expos move there instead of being contracted.

What about both OKC or Tulsa, both have great crowds and both for winning organization. Plus OKC has great fan base and great new stadium.

I think Detroit and Baltimore deserve baseball teams. Those cities have been starving for baseball for a long time.

I hear everyone talking about minor league cities. What about good'ole Pawtucket, RI? The "PawSox" draw very very well, 7th highest attendance among minor league franchises, and the fans are very loyal here. Downtown Providence (the RI Capital for those who don't know..) is only 10 minutes away, plus there is a hotel and restaurent just minutes from the park. I say Pawtucket and Las Vegas are two good spots. That's where I always put my teams in my solo league.

Psicosis,

No inferiority complex. Just fact, and I'm not smoking anything! Memphis sports fans have historically shown their indifference to sports teams. Autozone Park is a great AAA park, but couldnt be expanded to ML capacity simply b/c they "shoe-horned" it into downtown with no room for major expansion. Sure they are supporting the Redbirds right now b/c of the newness of the team AND the new park. Interest will wane as it always does in Memphis.
Neither will get one, but Nashville would be before Memphis IMO.

Where are you from in West TN?

Rochester, NY

It is now the largest City in America without a professional sports team.

It used to be Columbus but now they got their hockey team.

Rochester has a AAA team (Baltimore.

They (well I) need a Major League Sports Team.

If there was real interest from the MLB, I think they'd be able to figure something out regarding the area around it or even build a new stadium, but it's not enough of a possibility to really worry about at this point.

[quote]Interest will wane as it always does in Memphis.

Sure thing, Cleo.

[quote]Neither will get one, but Nashville would be before Memphis IMO.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree, then.

LOL CHARLOTTE THAT WAS GREAT!!! Who said Charlotte? How about putting a second team in Minneapolis? Or maybe expanding to Ottawa while the exchange rate is still low? I got an idea: Dayton, TN! We could all party at a certain friend's house the day before...

The Minor League capital of the Midwest - Grand Rapids, MI!!!!!

Home of the World Champion Grand Rapids Rampage, 2-time Midwest champion West Michigan Whitecaps, the AHL leading Grand Rapids Griffins, and the 2-time CBA title winning Grand Rapids Hoops!!!!!

Contrary to popular belief, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else.

Well, I live in Portland, OR and they say we should have a Major League team here within 2-3 years. They also say we are the biggest market without a pro baseball team. Atleast that is what they said on the news yesterday when the Mariners played here. I think it would be great, but won't hold my breathe.
