I'll take things at face value--his achilles is sore and they don't want to rush him.
I'm not sure if anyone is not taking it as the face value. It's just a fact that being an Achilles tendon injury doesn't mean it's less damaging for his career, or less chance for it to become chronic. As the link Modern Relic showed, the Achilles injury might already effect his mechanics, which caused his discomfort in elbow. I think the back problem was possibly also a minor one caused by compensating the Achilles injury.

It looks like there is no back problem. (at least not any more)

Perfect. Prior will be back soon....

Now now - leading the league in pitches per start in your first full season before the age of 24 is no big deal- why, back when men were men and baseball was pure, we did it all the time..

In any case, I had no idea Prior led the league by such a large margin.

I don't know...maybe pitcher usage should be measured in total pitches thrown per season? Who do you think thew more pitches last season, Halladay or Prior?

I guess I don't have to be lazy. I can do some quick math.

Prior: 30 GS at an avg. of 113.2 pitchers per = 3396 total pitches thrown. Give or take.

Halladay: 36 GS at an avg. of 100.3 pitchers per = 3611 total pitches thrown. Give or take.

How does this factor in, if at all?
MR, most of the research seems to indicate that its not a problem of quantity as much as the quality of the pitches- thus a pitcher throwing pitches 100-120 is a far bigger risk than when throwing pitches 10-20; and that's the problem with Prior. Mix in the fact that it was his first full season, and that's he at a younger, more injury prone age than Hallady, and you have a significant difference.

And the fact I drafted him on my fantasy team. That's usually enough for most pro-sportsmen to come down with some horrific injury.

For his sake I hope he's not injured, but for the Cubs and their fans here's to hoping Wood and Maddux join him on the DL.

Thanks for addressing my point, Aadik.

What you say makes perfect sense. I was just looking at it from a strictly "wear and tear over time" point of view.

I have to say though, I'm still not quite ready to crucify Baker for his starting pitcher usage...yet.

Dusty Baker takes care of pitchers' arms like I take care of cars. which means, don't worry about it until it don't work.

I'm willing to trade my dominant reliever Wagner for your Prior.

Don't worry. Anyone who says "scuttlebutt" has to be lying.

This is an excellent point, and is one that I have not seen addressed.
