"You scored a hundred runs? And the game handled that okay?"
No there is a score that your given at the end of each world series that tells you how well you did as a manager.I scored 100 in that. The most runs I have ever scored in a game is 22. |

Puritan, I feel your pain. I'm in my 5th year w/ fictional SD and my 1st 4 year results are:
year 1: Lost in WS 2: lost in WS 3: lost in 1st rnd 4: lost in 2nd rnd I won 89 (wildcard) in yr 1, and had the best record in the majors the following 3 years with 104, 111, and 116 wins. I've had cy youngs, MVPs, many slick fielders, best minors, you name it. I've had the best staff, and been in the top 5 in batting every year. If I come up with anything I'll let you know. Hmmm, how important is "clutch performer"?

Well, I just won my first world series, 3rd year after taking over the Cinci Reds. I have no explanation. I have an average, underachieving rotation (winningest pitcher was 16-game winner Reitsma, rated at 1.5 stars) and a slightly above-average bullpen. Some good hitters in the lineup, but I had only one player (Adam Dunn) that hit over 30 homers. Nearly lost in the first round to the Giants, but then swept the Marlins and the Rangers to take it. Go figure.
I have a lot of young talent, but most of them are still (hopefully) very much on the upswing. No one had under .700 OPS, and most people play good defense (exception was Dunn, and my 1B platoon [D and E range, but good hands on both of 'em]). I have two guys who can steal bases. My SS Betemit may have been my best player--he was an awesome leadoff guy (.400+ OBA, 35+ steals). So my advice is...well...keep pluggin'. -Brandiles |

Winning the WS? How about just "winning?" I'm in 2005 with my GForce Rosters' Indians. My team finished last in 2003 and next to last in 2004 in a weak division. Finally in 2005 (May 20th) I'm five games over .500, only 2 games out of first in the AL Central. Just winning (finally) is a rush. I hope my team can keep it up and stay in contention. I like the challenge of taking a lousy team and slowly building it into a contender. OOTP5 makes it difficult; in HighHeat and even in FSP it was always too easy. The fact that winning's not a slam dunk is part of the joy of this game.
If I get to the playoffs in 2005 I'll be happy. I'd love to have the chance to worry about losing the World Series!

I was probably 70 games below .500 my first year as the Reds. I've been consistently trading away the old and wealthy and replacing with young studs who were just breaking in or about ready to break into the bigs. I'm sure I abused the trading AI a bit, but hey, winning is fun. Maybe later if I'm winning "too much" I'll restart and crank up the trading AI difficulty.

I finally won a World Series with the Twins in Total Minors after about six seasons. But I only made the post season three times in that span I think, nothing like four straight seasons in the WS.
I'm having another good season this season, but I'm looking at the Orioles (!) in the postseason, and they are just beating the tar out of everyone.

Just lost a heartbreaker in the WS, 5-3. But, it's a non financial league, and nobody important is leaving, and I have a very good SP prospect and MR prospect in AAA, so I hopefully will be back. And I have 4 2-team divisions in each league, so I only have one team to beat.

SD WINS IT ALL!!!
With only 2 losses in the post season, SD wins the series after 4 consecutive years of early departure from the playoffs. It can be done!
Most of the honor should go to my pitching staff, who combined for a 2.71 ERA. My top 3 starters won 27, 23 and 21 games. My only advice is keep plugging away, and maybe get better pitching. My staff was # 1 for years and I had "no weaknesses" but I still went out and got another "superstar" SP and that was when I won. Also, even though your trade window may say "no weaknesses" I gaurantee you have positions you can upgrade. Don't be satisfied. Hopefully we broke through the wall and can enjoy many more years of World Championships. GO SD!!!!

In year five, 35 games in, my starting left fielder and #4 hitter goes down for the year with a broken knee. 50 games in, my starting second baseman and #3 hitter goes down for the year with a broken foot.
Luckily, along with the dominant starter that wasn't signed during FA, there was also a dominant outfielder left over that was able to contribute... and wouldn't you know, the team won 123 games and finally won its first championship with these hired guns. This was my youngest team by far. I traded for guys 24/25 who I thought were just ready to breakout. Sure enough, my C, younger 2b, RF and a SP played major roles in the post-season. I think I had a better mix of veterans and youngsters (I don't know if OOTP5 takes that into consideration or not). The 1-year deal free agent pitcher won 3 post-season games. After the season, he's again unsigned but I needed to start developing some younger arms. The outfielder got a 5-year/$60 million deal. Last edited by Puritan; 09-04-2003 at 12:04 AM. |
