Also if the Yanks haven't won a world series in over 20 years.

Cleveland wins first pick in draft lottery. It had only a 2.0% chance of doing so.

Yeah I think if anything, teams might have been reticent to go after Soto because they know he’s going to want to test the market. The Yankees would have to pay him a premium to avoid free agency but that’s exactly what they have the money to do. This is the Yankees after all.

I think the Ohtani "secrecy" stuff is kind of silly. I mean, I can understand if he doesn't want leaks of what's discussed in his meetings with other teams. But to not even let teams acknowledge that they've met with him? Dumb. I mean, everybody knows & expects that he's actually going to meet with at least a handful of teams and is highly unlikely to sign with a team without meeting with them first. So why would the simple fact that he met with a team be a big deal?

At any rate, nothing would surprise me, but I'm starting to think that he'll re-sign with the Angels... I guess I'd be a little surprised if he went to SF. I mean, he lives in Newport Beach. I can't see going from there to the Bay Area...

I own it up to not really understanding the celebrity culture of the American media. Nomo and Ichiro really seemed to play up being a celebrity and Ohtani seems kind of like the opposite, to be honest.

I'm now up to about 65-70% that he's signing in Toronto.

Yep, looks like he's going to the Jays...

As a Dodger fan, I'd say it's only minor disappointment. That large of a contract combined with the uncertainty of his future pitching status... They can do a lot of things with that money now...

There was talk of a reunion with Bellinger. With Ohtani apparently off the board and the Yankees no longer in pursuit of Bellinger, I'd say chances of that reunion just got a little better. Still probably a bit of longshot, though...

A bit curious that Ohtani chose Toronto. He must really dislike the culture of the LA area, and winning clearly didn't factor into his decision as much as he & his agent were trying to lead us to believe. Since we already know that multiple teams were wiling to throw boatloads of cash his way, his primary factor must've been "city vibe" or something along those lines. Not that that is a bad thing... Toronto is known for being appealing to foreign NBAers, so that could apply here.

I totally get that he doesn't want it to be a LeBron James "just how much attention-wh0ring can I do" type of thing. But I don't see the point of not wanting teams to even acknowledge that they've met with him. Seems awful prima-donna-ish of him to even ask that. If it were as simple as he's not really into the circus of it all, he'd simply ask clubs to keep their discussion private and then go about his business without any fanfare. I mean, what is accomplished by "there are rumors and reports that he met with the Cubs, Jays, and Giants..." vs. it simply being reported that "the clubs and his representatives have acknowledged that they've met with the Cubs, Jays, and Giants, but little is known about the substance of those discussions." That latter would make perfect sense. The former is pointless. It's certainly his right to ask for that level of secrecy, but it doesn't accomplish anything.

Red Sox pick up Tyler O'Neill from the Cardinals, for some used catcher's gear, and a broken bat.

O'Neill, when healthy, is scary. He's also a former Gold Glover. He is going to drill some holes in the Green Monster. He hits the ball HARD.

Ohtani to Doggers, 7 years 100 million. I guess he wants to win regular season games, but not play too late into post season.

Better team and he doesn't have to move. Logical to me.

10 years, $700 million

I had to do a double take when I read your message as I was like, wait, why did he sign for 20% of what was expected?

His going to the Dodgers is boring. And predictable. 10 years, $700 million is not (well, the $700M part, at least).

The worst part about this contract is the next guy is going to want more.

It seemed inevitable that he would go to the Dodgers or the Yankees

God help us. Players in the next 20 years are going to sign 10 year, 5.5 billion dollar contracts.

Can you imagine a world where some great player would say.. "I have a beautiful wife, wonderful kids, I play baseball for a living and my workplace is a stadium, I meet great people, I've realized my dream of being on a baseball card, I'm an all star with a ring, just give a million a year for a little luxury and I'm happy."

Yeah, yeah...I know...in that mystical, fantasy land where everyone sings songs and holds hands.

genuinely how many more ohtani like unicorns are we going to see in this sport? guys who have the upside of being an mvp level bat and a quality pitcher dont exactly grow on trees. this is the biggest player in baseball going to a massive market. when Ryu came to the dodgers he was drawing huge interest for the team in Korea, I can't imagine what Ohtani's off-field value is going to be to a brand like the Dodgers. he's being paid equivalent to a true international superstar like a Ronaldo or Messi. Soto in '25 and Vlad Jr. or whoever in 2026 are not going to be touching that money, let's be serious.
