If there are any non-roster invitees still on that roster, you'll get a pop-up telling you that they are on your active roster, but also need to be on your 40-man roster. It sounds to me like that's the pop-up you're getting. If I'm correct, you should be able to demote them without issue.
Yes, it was definitely Opening Day (before trying to advance past it). It was an online league so the prior sim ended the 'morning' of Opening Day, and then at that point when I was doing my management my only options for non-40man players with MLB contracts was to either add them to the 40-man, Release them, or Waive+DFA them.

As with most things, there's some corner cases where we may require an action just because we can't always be sure this was intended vs some sort of weird error where a guy got removed from the 40-man roster not in the expected setup.
That's about what I figured which is why I didn't figure it worth flagging at the time but mentioned it here as semi-related. Still running an offline test to try and recreate in case it's relevant.

That definitely shouldn't happen. I wonder if that's only the case on opening day. I know it's an online league, so you weren't able to make roster moves the day before OD, but my gut tells me you wouldn't have had that issue if you were able to make the moves before OD. But I could be wrong. I've never seen that, but I always set my opening day roster a day or two before opening day.

Looks like it's not just an OD issue as I was able to recreate it here.

Steps I took (for anyone who can figure out if I did something 'wrong'):

- New Standard Game
- Sim to mid-July (just to get through any pre-OD 2022 shenanigans)
- Take over Jays
- In Commish mode, edit Katoh's contract to 3y/13.5M (just to ensure he would clear Waivers)
- Waive/DFA Katoh to remove him from 40-man, then demote to AAA after he cleared Waivers
- Sim to 2023 Pre-season (confirming he is not on the 40-man, see first screenshot)
- Sim to 2021 Spring Training
- On second day of ST (to avoid issues with start of ST) invite Katoh as non-roster invitee - second screenshot confirms he is on ST invitee list and not on 40-man
- On March 1st, 2023 try and demote Katoh to AAA and run into the error in the 3rd screenshot

edit-
To clarify, I understand why there might not be a way to fix this without running into other roster rule issues; just figured I may as well showcase what I meant since I brought it up haha

You're right, that's a problem. I don't think there's anything you did to cause this. I doubt it's related, but I noticed between the two screenshots that even though you advanced a few weeks, the listed Time as a Professional remained 9 Years, 0 Days in both screenshots.

Do you get the same pop-up if you try to drag and drop him on the transactions screen?
