If I remember right, Mike Tyson always came out of the box red-hot, but it would not be too long before he was closer to the Mendoza line than .300.
Scipio Spinks was a top prospect for the Cardinals until a violent collision at the plate with Johnny Bench on July 4, 1972 on a play where -- as a pinch-runner -- he tried to score from first base on a double.
Spinks, who was 5-5 with a 2.67 ERA in 16 starts at the time, suffered torn ligaments in his left knee and missed the remainder of the season.
I remember watching that game on TV.
Spinks pitched in just eight games in the 1973 season -- so I should be looking for an injury here in the next few weeks -- before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury.
He was traded to the Cubs before the start of the 1974 season and never pitched in the majors again, retiring in 1976.

I have made a decision in terms of transactions.
I can only trade/release players on or after the date they were traded during the 1973 season.
That doesn't mean, I have to make the same exact transaction that was made according to history.
I can trade them to a different team at a different time, or combine them with another player who is eligible to be moved based upon the parameters I plan to follow.
