It appears to me that there could be a bug in regards to turning off real life IL after a league is already created, so you have to turn it off during creation. I hope I'm making sense.
OK, I think I now understand what you are saying, but can you post the specific steps regarding the advanced option? For example, on the Historical Wizard, when you get to Step 2, do you check or leave unchecked Use real historical transactions? And at what point do you enter the Advanced option?

Lets create 1975.

Select create historical league
Select 1975
Make your selections in regards to Base Fielding on and base pitcher stamina on.
The select next step

Step 2
Select the option for Real Transactions

Step 3, nothing really to do here...I use this step to make sure the game is set to recalculate

Step 4
Select your preference for the defensive ratings scale and you can select the option to have coach pictures
Now go to the bottom left and select Advanced Mode

Once you are in the Advanced mode, select the Historical Tab
Use Real historical Transactions will already be selected, so just leave it alone
Right below that option, you will see the option for Use Real IL transactions. Remove the check disabling this option.

You can also use this page to set your game to 1 year recalck, as
3 year is the default.

At this time, you can name your league on the left side of this screen and select start game.

Your league will be created and it shouldn't have any 255 guys,

Now, another thing you brought up. Players missing seasons according to history even when you don't want them to. When you use the Advanced mode, you will notice "miss seasons" and "retire" aren't checked when you disable IL transactions. But, when you create your league, the game defaults back to having both those options on or selected.

Uncheck the option to miss season. I created 1942 and did just this. When 43 rolls around, Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio are not listed as missing the season. But, the problem is, they are free agents. You can put them on teams and they will play. Other problem, the make bad settings make them bench guys due to the no stats deal.

Interesting. (FYI, Williams and DiMaggio become free agents not because of settings, but because the historical transactions file moves them; maybe you know this...) At any rate, OOTP used to just fill in the blanks for those guys and/or let the development engine take over. Something like that... I wonder if neutralized stats might make a difference... Not the same thing, but look at Retire Accdg to History, if I unretire Koufax each year (after his retirement after the 1966 season) and put him back on the roster, he remains an Ace for years...

Okay, I just figured out one way to make sure they don't plummet to the bottom.....Do away with he make bad settings altogether I'm guessing if you use 5 year recalc they will probably be okay as well. 1 year recalc can be very cruel.

I'm getting something different. Yep, Williams and Joe D are in the free agents list, but when I reassign them (and several others, such as J Mize, Pee Wee, Dom D, E Slaughter) to their MLB teams and sim thru the war seasons, nearly all of these guys perform well and have good ratings. The issues, though, are 1) they can't stay healthy, and 2) often when they go on the IL, they stay there until I remove them (their "days left" does not decrease from 15 or 7 or whatever...).
