I'm in 2023 and noticed a similar problem with a bunch of Canadians named "Murdoch."

So to modify...
...do you have to do it on each player's page, or is there a way to shuffle/re-assign names for a group...say the current draft class of amateur players?
Thanks. |

I think you can re-randomize all the names in a league but I don't think you can break it down like that. I just rename guys that I come across when playing out games or trading where I hate their names, or sometimes change their faces to match the names (although I haven't noticed much of the good old High Heat problems of Carlos O'Shea etc. :P Also also, I wonder where the Italian names come from because they don't really correspond to actual Italian names (at least as among my Italian baseball FB friends and actual Italian friends).

I worked on the OOTP name sets many many years ago. It's a surprisingly difficult endeavor to make accurate name generation.
Not only do you have to account for nationality, along with the fact that not all people in a particular nation are of that nationality, but then you also have the fact that census data is not only difficult to come by in some cases, but also in many cases contains inaccurate data. And census data is often driven by nation, and not split into ethnicity. US census data is also full of "Mickey Mouse"s and stuff like that, and for many ethnicities there just isn't any census data available. You could go based solely on past baseball players' names, but even that is inaccurate, because just because there hasn't been a baseball player named X, there might be in the future. Not to mention, you have to throw in era as well. While there HAS been an increase in names like DeSean in the African American ethnicity, there weren't ANY of those 50 years ago, so that has to be taken into account as well. You also have to make sure you handle first+last name combinations accurately. While it's theoretically possible, you can't have too many DeSean Weinbergs out there. So, it's a long fight to get a really really accurate, unique names database that spans so many eras, ethnicities, and nationalities. Info on how to modify the files yourself can be found here: https://manuals.ootpdevelopments.com...he_names_files

Can't argue with the Juan-Luis Blue Jays of 2042. I think "Duque" Alvarado was named Juan originally but I changed it. Majano and Andrade might have been Luises too. But I couldn't say no to the all-Luis outfield.
![]() Oh and I definitely changed "Keith" Sakurai. Haha. I think only Jared Montecalvo had a decently interesting name on this team. Bob Gleason sounds like he just stepped out of the 1950's. And famed African-American catcher Randy "Red Rocket" Cephus from Rockford has been keeping on with a pretty illustrious career. Last edited by dbqs; 08-07-2018 at 12:32 PM. |

names are still totally editable in the "first_names"/"names" files, right? That's generally where I go to tone down certain name generation.
Because I like to play global and far-reaching, I would much prefer if OOTP was discerning enough to specialize things like the Y-revolution in Cuban namesets or specific sets for each Balkan country (or, for the love of God, realistic Israeli names), but really the prevailing way people play the game is for MLB management, and if the few thousand players across the major leagues with a Hispanic nameset are overwhelmingly named Juan or Felix or Luis, the casual player won't notice. Maybe they'll change it later on, though. |

Just when I thought there was nothing more to say... today I just drafted a player named Sincere Holiness. I kid you not.

I swear to God, those were must-read for me every release, and this one would certainly belong on there!

2. Likewise, if you want Balkan names, there are Albanian, Bosnian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbian, and Slovenian mods. You can also find them in the above-linked list. 3. OOTP now comes with an Israeli nameset - it's nameset #40. Have you tried it? And, if so, what do you find unrealistic about it? |

To be fair the namesets in football manager while good still need improving and do improve from year to year.
It’s a super difficult task and when you have developers of mostly one nationality it’s even more difficult because because while you can use census data unless you are immersed in the culture for decades it’s hard to get a “feel” for names. And FM has 100+ researchers feeding in data and they still have people who pop onto the forums from different places to bring up issues. |

You need to update your recollection. The new Israeli nameset contains only Israeli names.

ja, la, je, de, et al. in front of a name ... these things are not related to pigment in the skin, whatsoever. stronger correlation to money and education for sure. lots of stupidly named white people all over the place in the same proportions relative to these factors. it's not that they are any color, it's that they are 'likely' poor, stupid and young, but this is only a correlation and not causality. |

Nah, we've not touched Israel or the Balkans yet
![]() As to the topic, I've noticed a lot of players with the surname Garcia in my latest game, although it is a common name, so that might be a coincidence. |
