So many Juans!

I think the name generator in OOTP 19 needs some tweaking.

I'm in the 2050 season, and there are 100 major leaguers and 596 minor leaguers named Juan in my game. Seems excessive, and it's incredibly confusing - there are 7 Juan Aguilar's in the majors and 4 are starting pitchers! Around the same age, too.

I also have 19 players with the first name of Sincere, which is just...odd, I think.

There are also 169 players with the first name of Jorge.

In my current game, in either 2020 or 2021 there were three guys called Amari drafted in the first round. I just had to go and roll the name generator to get new names for two of them.

The African-American and Hispanic first names are a bit limited.

Black names are easy to fix though. Just take a regular name and throw a "De" in front of it.

I've never made it far enough to notice this problem but I could see how it would be annoying.

It's like whichever chip used to advertise that you couldn't eat just one. You keep saying to yourself, "just Juan more."

Thank you! I noticed this in OOTP '18 and posted about it back in January. 12,985 active players total, of all nationalities, in the database of one of my past leagues and 1,914 were either named Juan or Luis.

The disparity in the Hispanic min/max is too much, IMO. Juan and Luis have default frequencies set to 6,500 and 4,600 in the first_names file. For Jose, the frequency is even higher at 10,000; all while the majority of Hispanic first names are set to 1. After 10+ seasons, I'd finally seen enough Juan's/Luis's and drastically lowered the frequencies, myself, to get more variety.

Just choose any random player of Hispanic nationality (preferably a fictional/generated player who's name you don't care for), go to his Editor and keep clicking "Assign Random Name" over and over. Tells you all you need to know.

Is it though? Really? Because in the world I live in, with many black friends, co-workers, acquaintances, etc. I can't think of a single person for whom this would be true.
So, I have to wonder if you are proceeding on a very small sample size and confirmation bias here.
(See there, I didn't say anything about you being a racist. Just, maybe, a little sheltered. And not as funny as you might think.)

My entire life, I've known two people of whose name that could be accurately stated. Out of hundreds. I'm thinking this is a case of someone who has watched the wrong TV shows and thinks there are actually a few million Shaniquas in the country.

Edit: I suppose if we expand this to people we didn't personally know, Deray would be a third, but then the hundreds become thousands as well.

So before the lockdown comes yes I agree with OP I've noticed a lot of Juan's in my 25 year universe as well so much so that I've started renaming my star Juans and Joses. Juan and Jose are the more popular Hispanic first names like Joe and Johns but yes the frequency seems to be a bit dialed up.

Well let's just take a look at the numbers ... whoah! In the "39" (US - African-American) first-names database, "Sincere" has a frequency of 559! Evidently there's a whole lot of sincerity going on out there.

Is that a realistic figure? I have no idea. OOTP took over Questdog's name sets, which included this African-American database, but Questdog never disclosed the sources that he used for his names. According to the Social Security Administration, there were 477 male babies given the name "Sincere" in 2017, which was the highest number of Sinceres born in the US ever. The name entered the top 1000 in 2000 and has been gaining popularity ever since. On the other hand, players today were mostly born in the 1990s, and "Sincere" didn't crack the top 1000 at any time during that decade.

Frankly, I'm less surprised that you got 19 Sinceres than by the fact that you apparently didn't notice all of the black players in your league named "Justin," which has a frequency of 11456. Now, Justin happens to be a wildly popular name (it was in the top 20 throughout the 1990s), but I don't really associate that name with the African-American community. Honestly, if you asked me for the "whitest" first name for boys, I think "Justin" would be right up there with "Jordan" and "Jason."

Again, is that realistic? I have no clue. The SSA doesn't break down name data by race, so I don't know where Questdog got his information. According to baseball-reference.com, there are 13 players currently on major-league rosters with the first name of "Justin;" only one of whom - Justin Upton - is African-American. Oddly, while "Justin" is the 7th most frequent name in the US-Modern (0) database, it is the 3rd most frequent name in the African-American database. At least in OOTP's view, then, there is a higher percentage of black "Justins" than white "Justins." That strikes me as somewhat questionable.

The good news, though, is that names are highly moddable. If you're dissatisfied with the name frequencies in the game, you can change them with a few keystrokes. Or else download some of the many mods that are out there. As they say, it's your game, play it your way.

Came here to mention the oversupply of players named "Sincere". Seeing that it's already been noted in these forums, I'll suffice to mention that my current fictional league in 2048 has 23 such guys when I did a search of the current players. Sincere Arkansas is my favorite combination, and he's an all-star reliever to boot. Sincere Canada does not approach his talent - USA! USA! USA! Sincere Cleggett, Sincere Junious and Sincere Drones also are names with some character. In fact I don't see any prosaic-sounding Sincere Smiths, Washingtons or Wilsons. I'm sure it's just a sincere coincidence.

It’s accurate? Really? I myself am black, and my name is Jeff. Every friend that I have that is black doesn’t have a “De” attached to their name.

Joking or not, this was Insensitive as hell
