League/Editor's Note

While this league is a lot of fun simming and seeing history unfold, I feel I am not as involved as I could be, and simply just reading/posting stats rather than experience the different Eras/players. So, starting in 1903 (after the off-season so I start with a new team rather than a draft), I will be taking over the worst team in the league over the past 2 seasons. I will mostly be the GM and make all baseball decisions, but I will also play 1-2 games a week so the speed on the league might slow down a bit. I’ll play with that team until I get them a WS championship, then I will take off a year, and move on to the worst team in the league at that point. Therefore, starting in 1903, I will also be posting team reports in this thread as well as the current reports I am posting. I hope this adds to the read and allows me to get more “into” the historical sim.

1903 Cleveland Pre-Season/preview

CLEVELAND BRONCOS
1903 PRE-SEASON

The worst team over the 1st 2 years of the league has been Cleveland, therefore that is who I am taking over first.
*NOTE*
I am not going to "ruin" history by stacking my team with all the superstars of the decades. Regardless of what team I take over, I will play by the following rules...
#1 only trades allowed are ones offered to me, or fair counters for deals offered to me. IE cpu offers me a 2 star ss for my 2 star RF, and im good at ss, but could use a 2b, so i counter with mt 2 star RF for a 1.5 star 2b.
#2 i am not playing in manager mode because in a historical league there is alot of editing, but i will not edit 1 stat/rating no matter what
#3 i will not rig the draft so I get a superstar who will be gone before I pick
#4 in the future, if it comes up, i will limit spending, but since i will be taking over bottom feeder teams, i doubt this will come up

BACKGROUND
Cleveland has finished in last place the 1st 2 years and have been an avg. of 26 games out of the playoffs. We have virtually no proven superstars and one of the worst minor league systems. Combine those with the fact that most of our draft picks have been rushed to the majors due to lack of talent and loss of fan base over the last 2 years, and it’s a long road to haul to get them to championship status. We still do sell out most of our games, but that is due to our small stadium which holds only 9000 people, however last year we lost close to 5 million dollars, and will have very little money for contract extensions and/or free agents in then ext few years. But we did change our team name so hopefully that will draw some interest from our fans and bring us better luck.
RECENT RECORD HISTORY:
1902 – 66-88 - .429
1901 – 58-96 - .377
FINANCIAL STATUS:
Broadcasting revenue - $15,000,000
Current payroll - $34,453,243
Cash - $729,591
$ left for extensions - $18,708,830
$ left for free agents - $0
FAN STATUS:
Fan interest – 44/100
Market – Almost nonexistent
Loyalty – Good
PLAYER FA STATUS:
FA after year – SP Griffith, C Wood
Arbitration eligible – SP Broggins, SP Cristall, 2b Beck, RF Davis, 3b Bradley, SP Scott, SP Patten, SS Hall, CF Pickering, RF Cross
Auto resign – LF Arndt, SP Hess, SP Scanlon, SP Gibson, 3b Dearmond, SS Bean, RF Schlafly, C Carish

MLB ROSTER
PITCHERS:
SP Clark Griffin
- 33yo – R/R – 2.5 stars – 7-5-5-8-8-2-7 - $7,535,000/1903
- Pretty solid SP but aging, will be our #3 starter and probably not resigned, 17-21 last year
SP Case Patten
- 26yo – L/S – 1 star – 3-4-6-7-5-3-4 - $3,374,286/1903
- Got in a BAD trade for SP prospect Clarence Currie last year. Overpaid and avg. at best, will try to make into our closer. Hoping he improves due to his young age
SP Norwood Gibson
- 26yo – R/R – 3.5 stars – 8-6-5-11-7-4-5 - $300,000/1903
- Future ace, #1 pick in last draft who is clearly ready for the big leagues already. Will be our #1 starter despite never throwing a pitch in the majors. Expecting big things from him
SP Otto Hess
- 24yo – L/L – 5 blue stars – 7-7-5-7-6-3-7 - $300,000/1903
- Rushed to the majors last year, and it showed as he went 3-19, 6.16era. Had a great spring and ratings jumped. Should develop into a great SP, will be our #2
SP Doc Scanlan
- 22yo – R/L – 3.5 blue stars – 5-6-3-6-4-2-7 - $300,000/1903
- 2nd rd pick in last draft, will be thrown into the fire immediately and be our #4 starter this year on a strict pitch count for the entire season
SP Bill Hoffer
- 32yo – R/R – 1 star – 3-4-2-7-6-2-5 - $513,000/1904
- Was our best pitcher last year (23-13), but management is going with youth so he has been bumped to long relief/spot starter.
SP Ed Scott
- 32yo – R/R – 1 star – 3-4-4-6-5-2-1 - $350,000/1903
- Horrible last year (4-14, 6.01) so moved into the bullpen
SP Bill Cristall
- 24yo – L/L – 2 blue stars – 2-4-4-7-3-1-5 - $300,000/1903
- Prospect who has never fully developed despite being in the league 2 years already. Hoping this is the year
SP Crazy Schmit
- 37yo – L/L – 1 star – 0-2-2-8-3-1-6 - $300,000/1903
- Only in the majors due to no one being ready in AAA, clearly over the hill, mopup duty at most
PITCHING STAFF:
Rotation:
N. Gibson – R
O. Hess – L
C. Griffith – R
D. Scanlan – R
Bullpen:
B. Hoffer – R – spot starter/long relief/setup
C. Schmit – L – mopup
E. Scott – R – middle
B. Cristall – L – middle
C. Patten – L – closer
BATTERS:
C Malachi Kittridge
- 33yo – R/R – 2.5 stars – 5-4-4-1-6-7 - $1,118,100/1905
- Decent hitter, great defense, no speed. Won Gold Glove last year, so will start strictly for that fact.
C Bob Wood
- 37yo – R/R – 2.5 stars – 5-7-5-0-2-9 - $1,543,571/1903
- About ready to hang em up, but can still hit a little and plays 7 positions so has a spot on the bench
1b Candy Lachance
- 33yo – S/R – 2.5 stars – 6-4-13-1-8-2 - $2,090,000/1904
- One of our better hitters but no power, avg. speed/defense
2b Erve Beck
- 24yo – R/R – 2.5 stars – 5-5-6-2-1-10 - $1,343,571/1903
- Starting 2b who we hope will improve since he is still young
3b Bill Bradley
- 25yo – R/R – 2.5 stars – 5-5-14-3-3-8 - $1,710,000/1903
- Our biggest power hitter so will hit cleanup, should be a solid player
3b Charlie Dearmond
- 26yo – R/R – 1 star – 4-4-6-0-2-6 - $300,000/1903
- 3rd rd pick in last draft, will come off bench
3b Bill Hallman
- 36yo – R/R – 1 star – 5-3-6-0-4-8 - $684,500/1905
- Has had a solid career (1500+ hits), but his time is almost up
SS Joe Bean
- 29yo – R/R – 1.5 stars – 4-2-2-0-3-8 - $300,000/1903
- Excellent defense, good speed, late game replacement
SS Russ Hall
- 31yo – R/L – 1.5 stars – 5-2-4-1-2-7 - $461,429/1903
- Better hitter than Bean, but liability in he field so will come out late in game
LF Harry Arndt
- 24yo – R/R – 2 blue stars – 5-3-9-1-7-7 - $300,000/1903
- Rough rookie year last year, but looks like he could be a decent player, will platoon in left this year
LF Jack McCarthy
- 34yo – L/L – 1 star – 5-4-10-0-2-8 - $2,907,000/1904
- WAY overpaid, but he does play better than stats indicate and will platoon in left
CF Ollie Pickering
- 32yo – L/R – 3 stars – 7-2-3-0-5-7 - $4,774,286/1903
- Premier leadoff hitter in the game. Good contact & blazing speed. Our best positional player who we will need a lot from this year
RF Frank Cross
- 30yo – R/R – 1 star – 4-3-0-1-1-9 - $300,000/1903
- Strictly a bench player
RF Lefty Davis
- 28yo – L/L – 3 stars – 6-4-13-1-7-7 - $300,000/1903
- Nice gap hitter with solid speed, will bat 3rd for us
RF Tom Donovan
- 30yo – R/R – 1 star – 4-4-9-2-2-6 - $300,000/1903
- Better than star rating, but still not starter material
RF Larry Schlafly
- 24yo – R/R – 2 blue stars – 4-3-6-2-2-5 - $300,000/1903
- Our #4 OF, minor prospect with some potential, but probably nothing more
STARTING LINEUP:
1 CF Pickering – L
2 LF McCarthy – L / Arndt – R
3 RF Davis – L
4 3b Bradley – R
5 1b Lachance – S
6 C Kittridge – R
7 2b Beck – R
8 SS Hall – R

TOP MINOR LEAGUERS (very weak in minors):
SP Dick Braggins
- 23yo – 3.5 blue stars – AAA
- Hard thrower, avg. talent ratings, could be a #3-4 starter in future
SP Bock Baker
- 24yo – 1.5 blue stars – AA
- Not very good, but sadly our 2nd best prospect
C Paddy Livingston
- 23yo – 1.5 blue stars – A
- 23 year old still at A ball, ‘nuff said

Cleveland - April 1903

CLEVELAND BRONCOS
APRIL 1903

RECORD:
11-17 - .393 – 9gb (7-8 home / 4-9 road)
We started out great, going 3-0 to start the season, but then fell back to earth posting a 8-17 record over the rest of April. Had 1 rough streak where we lost 5 in a row, including being swept by NY. We did go 2-0 in games that I actually played, and the team looked good when I was using them.

ADDITIONAL INFO:
Our Starting pitchers are like night and day. Gibson and Hess have been great, keeping us in every game they’ve pitched, while Griffith and Scanlan have been dreadful and got us down early in the games they’ve pitched. If this continues next month, we might have to make a change in our rotation.
The only lineup change was moving 2b Beck up to 6th in the lineup. C Kittridge and SS Hall have struggled but will remain in the starting lineup to try to get out of their early season funk.
Backup C Wood has played well, and his % of playing moved up a little. Same with Bean at SS.

I really enjoy doing these reports, and while I don't expect responses with every post I just want to make sure people are atleast reading them, since it does take awhile to do them. So if you read this post, please atleast drop a quick reply saying you are reading the reports so I know I'm not doing them for no reason.
