Acer now and had an Asus before. Acer running very well. My Asus lasted 3 years before it hit the skids. Windows 8 took some getting used to but is fine now.
Personally if a MAC was in my budget I would buy that, it looks cooler. Last edited by Dr.K; 06-05-2015 at 07:25 PM. |

I hate Windows 8. Having problems with the updates as well. I have ACER and it's absolutely fine only Windows is holding my laptop to be really nice. And of course all the rubbish programs installed or the fact that I can't install Daemon Tools. Which is windows thing

As long as you purchase a quality laptop, don't worry about burning it up. Especially since you will be one who takes care of his stuff. EDIT: This machine is also a Toshiba as others have mentioned. I just mentioned Gateway because I've had far more experience with their products to where I feel good recommending them. I love my machine and it was very affordable.

Bottom line these days is that laptops are easily as reliable and high performance as any desktop. If you need a bigger screen or external mouse for a desktop feel the cost is negligible.
The kicker is you can take it with you on the road. It's a no brainer!

Another tip: Avoid Eurocom. I bought a Eurocom laptop a year ago and I've already had to get it repaired two or three times.

My 8-year old Toshiba is still going strong. Has hardly any room left to put anything on, but other than that, can't complain considering its age.

I had 2 acer laptops. They were both cheap crap. They did the job for a few years, but eventually the hinges went on both. I now have 2 lenovo laptops (a t440p and a yoga3) and, besides the t440p's touchpad being wonky every once in awhile, they're great. We primarily got them because they're consistently rated one of the most durable brands and so far so good. I very seriously considered getting an asus gaming laptop a few years ago, but in the end I waited and got the t440p instead. I'm glad I did too because the asus I was going to get was a 17 or 18" and I now realize that I just too much like moving my laptop around and it would have been just too big and heavy to do that much. Oh, and I had a Toshiba as one of my best friends raved about his, but the one we got (a T230?) broke just over a year into having it. Never again.

Well, the good news is I managed to get my desktop back working. Did a system restore and so far so good. But, you folks have wet my appetite for a laptop. May have to take the plunge.
I'm a newbie to Steam, but I've really taken to it. I have another question. Can I play OOTP offline on a laptop as long as I choose the option to play offline? |

With Steam you can use it on any PC you own as long as the software in installed and the game is installed on that local machine. Once you log into your Steam account on a machine it logs you out of wherever else you are logged into. It allows you to have your games library anywhere that has an internet connection. And once the game is installed you don't have to have an active connection and can play offline. But it is hard to answer those questions since I cannot remember the last time I had a computer that did not have an internet connection

I have another question. Are there any processors to avoid? Intel Celeron? AMD? Or should I just strictly look at Intel machines?

Ack, never buy a Celeron. Anything on this chart will be fine:

I work in IT (so take that FWIW) and we have Lenovo/HP/Dell. From my experience, HP for laptops and Dell for desktops. Lenovo's are not bad, just not as easy to fix as HP/Dell.
In my house we have 3 HP laptops and 2 Dell desktops and a Lenovo tablet. I always choose a desktop over anything.. so my Dell rig is an Intel i7 with a 1 TB hybrid HD, 8 GB of ram and a NVIDIA Geforce 650ti graphics card. I've had it for about 7-8 months now and so far everything I play, I can play on max settings (I'm a Steam junkie). It runs OOTP like a dream.. although I would like to get another 4GB of ram. ![]() Back to the OP... you can still get pc's with Windows 7 (and Windows 10 is free to anyone running W7 or W8.1) So... depending on what you want to spend, I would check out Dell if you are looking for a reliable desktop pc. They start around $400 and go up quickly from there. ![]() Whatever you choose.. I would make sure it has W7 (all should be 64BIT by now), and an Intel processor (at least an i5 - but i7 if you have the cash) and at least 8 GB of memory. I always purchase a better video card from somewhere like New Egg.. but you can always upgrade that stuff as well if you don't want to mess with installing one, it's just much cheaper if you buy aftermarket. FOR YOUR ORIGINAL issue.. probably not the pc. Run a hard drive test just to make sure it's good and as long as the hard drive test passes, all you probably need to do is rebuild your profile. Sometimes a simple reboot fixes it.. but if not you can google the error and usually find the solution. If you need help, just PM me. ![]() Make sure your hard drive is good.. if so, here is a link that might help you fix your issue.. http://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/how-to/wi...ows-7-3495216/ Last edited by MizzouRah; 06-06-2015 at 11:20 AM. |

I second that thought on the Celeron. It's Intel's "entry level" chip, and it's the slowest CPU on the market!
If you want computing power, I'd go with an Intel I5, or if you are budget conscious, an I3. But the chart Wolf linked is a good start to see which might fit your needs the best. |
