Clearly, the people in the basement are just better. It's the only reasonable explanation.

Well, fight fans, we finally had our first 5 Boroughs matchup between #2 contender Roderick "The Playboy" Johnston and Frank "The Club" Seiler. It was a decent fight in all, at least once you get past the fact that Johnston did all that bobbing and weaving and throwing light little girl punches that we normally associate with the French. Will that be enough for him to defeat Jaffe? Well, we don't know. We've sort of forgotten how good or bad he is because the jerk hasn't put on gloves since March. Oh, he shows up every Friday to talk about the "game", but if he doesn't get himself into a matchup soon... well, let's just say that our Tammany Hall connections might come in handy here.
Merlin Vienns seems to have a predilection for shocking fight fans. The patron saint of the French style nonetheless delivered a powerful performance against the heretofore undefeated Oscar Thompson. We'll say it straight out - Thompson was lucky. Still, Thompson was delivered to the mat in under a minute against a guy who really, we swear, doesn't punch all that hard. Makes you wonder. Notes: Allen Pulito broke his ankle following the fight and will be out for several months. Serves him right for headhunting in the first round. Also following his fight, Canadian Tanguy Ruel announced he is returning to his homeland for 6 months to support his family cutting logs. Since he "earned" a draw against future tomato can Spencer Summers in his only match, it's hard to say that he'll be particularly missed. Code:

I think it might be a good idea for this publication's editorial staff to spend some quality time in a back alley with Marcel Cerdan.

As for the responses, I'd have to agree with Chris. I don't want to be critical to the posters or readers of the OOTP Dynasty forum, but they really don't give a person much enthusiasm for continuing a baseball dynasty. Last year I was doing one which included weekly reports of the happenings around the league. Not to blow my own horn, but it was better than probably 90% of the stuff being posted there and with the exception of board member ifspuds, I rarely got a word of encouragement or compliment. It was one of the reasons why I stopped doing it because even though it was getting a lot of views, and even though I was enjoying writing it, I really felt like I was performing to an empty auditorium, so to speak. Folks down here in ItR really get involved in the universes people craft and they let you know that with their posts. Welcome aboard! |

October 1866
October brings us the first regional class ring championship. Jesse Jaffe TKO'd the free-living Roderick "Playboy" Johnston during the title-opening tourney, so it wasn't all that strange that he won an easy unanimous decision. It was just good to see Jaffe in the ring again. Johnston's defeat propelled Jesus Horne back into the #1 contender slot. Horne also lost twice to Jaffe in the tournament; it's going to be nice to see some of these non-tournament entrants get promoted to the region so they can take on the ringmaster.

Well, we waited for the rematch between Laffe Jaffe and Jesus "The Messiah" Horne all year long and... this is how it ended. Horne seems to have a real problem with opening up wounds. One could almost say he has the fistic stigmata, har har har. His loss throws the 5 Boroughs into turmoil. Jeffrey Melton is now the best-looking boxer of the bunch, although nobody really looks like they have a chance against Jaffe. We guess that means he's going to sit on his rear for another 6 months talking about how great a fighter he is.
In other news, the league is taking on a more international flavor with some of its new additions. Witness Don Flamenco, whose path to the ring involves him holding a rose between his teeth. Don't ask us why; we guess it's a bullfighting thing. He also believes that he has really good hair, but we can't really tell on account of all the pomade he puts in it. Captain Jack O'Rourke is the other new non-US fighter; he is, shall we say, not very acclimated to the rules set down by the Marquis of Queensbury, but it seems to work for him. Code:

Notes on November 1866:
Tanguy Ruel finally did get himself away like he promised, but only after getting pounded by Nutmeg State fighter "Orange Julius" Perry. His ankle, despite what it says in the fight summary, is just fine. We hear that the lumber trade does wonders for a man's arm strength... Julius Perry himself was caught in an alcohol "abuse" scandal that won't make a lot of sense unless we explain it. We at Frank's gym, we like to drink a fair amount. We encourage our boxers to do the same. Well, unbeknownst to us Orange Julius had been pretending to get as loaded as everybody else but was actually feeding the beer to his dog that he kept under the table. This way, we think, he was getting the lowdown on what the other fighters' self-proclaimed strengths and weaknesses were. Nobody was any the wiser until the end of this month, when that canine sadly perished of acute liver poisoning. We've decided to give Perry 3 months off to think about his actions. If he's a real man, he won't use his ill-gotten knowledge to land more strong hits when he comes back. Nathan Rice busted up his knee shortly after his unanimous decision loss to Scott Ross. He was sparring too soon after a fight. Should have known better. He'll be out for a good 6 months with that blow. The travails of Captain Jack O'Rourke continue. Following his victory over Nicholas Gregory, O'Rourke poked out the eye of the doctor who was giving him his post-fight physical and was suspended from boxing for 30 days. "Yar, I be not havin' a man touch me in that way when I ain't at sea," he said by way of explanation. Thomas McConkey rolled his ankle celebrating his latest loss. Nothing big; he won't box next month but should be able to start losing again in no time. Finally, Jesse Jaffe's gloves appeared to have been doctored when our people looked at them in the post-fight inspection. He was immediately banished from Frank's Gym for a year and the 5 Boroughs Belt will be shortly rewarded to someone else. You may wonder why it is that a man who loads up his hands before a fight gets a 1 year suspension while a man who gets his dog drunk only gets 3 months. However, if you wonder about that too much, perhaps you should go back to Canada where people do that sort of thing all the time.

For the time being, the 5 Boroughs Class Ring is on the finger of Frank "The Club" Seiler following his convincing decision against the unconvincing Michael Butler. Still, through 12 career bouts Seiler has lost as many matches as he's won so we don't expect that he'll be holding onto the ring for long. Jeffrey Melton, who won a split decision against Seiler in his first New York City regional bout, decided he didn't want to fight this month. What were we expected to do? Wait for this young scoundrel to feel he was up to it before allowing him to box for the title?
Speaking of regions, there have been rumblings among the Canadian crowd that they may have a version of the 5 Boroughs Class Ring sometime soon. Already Merlin the Magician has propped himself up as the "Canadian champion", and although that title strikes us as about as useful as "finest epic poet in Yonkers", we see no reason why they should not have a little glory of their own. Another title we expect to see soon is the King of the Ring 1: The Fellowship of the Ring belt, which will be awarded to the top newcomer and defended as such until the boxer moves up into regional play. Ah, a new year of pugilistics and fisticuffs and assorted other names for the sport of one man bashing another man's brains out. This one figures to be even more exciting than the first, and that's saying quite a lot!
Without a doubt, the fight of the month award has to go to the Casey-Jackson matchup that took place on the 25th. Both fighters came out headhunting and thus it was no surprise that one of them hit the mat early. Brandon Casey tried to cover up for the rest of the first but Jackson still got to him. He barely got up on the count of 9 and only made it through the round because the bell tolled shortly thereafter. Casey also got cut underneath one eye and spent the majority of the 2nd running away from punches while waiting for it to clot. Jackson took this maneuver as a sign that his opponent was ready to be taken down. Not the best of decisions. "Mighty" Casey timed his punches in the third against the charging Jackson, and he struck Jackson down once, twice, and then three times. Just like in the new ball game that is taking this city by storm, three strikes generally means that you are out. Based on this, we've elected to award Brandon Casey the King of the Ring award. We're not sure how long he'll hold it, as we imagine he'll be moving up to the next level very quickly, but for the time being he's the man to beat. Code:

If Jesus Horne fought nobody but Roderick "Playboy" Johnston, we imagine he'd be the 5 Boroughs ringholder by now. Of course, Johnston hasn't held the ring himself so that would be pretty hard. We were and still are skeptical of Horne's ability to last 10 rounds against somebody with proven punching power; Horne seems to open up a gash above his eye every single fight and this has led him to go for broke in the middle rounds of even some of his shorter fights. Having the ability to knock an opponent out is great; having to resort to that strategy because otherwise you're going to have the match called on cuts isn't. Even when he does win that way, he's got to tend to his wounds for a month and thus could miss out on fighting opportunities.
In other news, the New York region just got a little bigger as Nicholas Gregory announced he was moving up. He provides the 5 Boroughs with the kind of winning boxer it has missed since the suspension of Laffy Jaffe. Speaking of promotions, we're waiting with pleasure for Canadians Alexis Beaudoin and Norris Hetu to tell good old Frank that they'll be moving up to the Canadian regionals. When that happens, we expect that they'll retire to a second gym and hold matches there. We don't know for sure, but based on our knowledge of the people to the north, it will probably be owned by someone named "Guy" who pronounces his name "Gee" and who gets very angry when you say his name wrong. Don't say you weren't warned. Notes: All was not well for Alexis Beaudoin, as it turns out that he broke his hand on Vladimir "Vodka" Drunkenski's face and will miss a couple months. Norris Hetu also bowed out for the next few months. He's following in his fellow Canadians' footsteps and taking up logging for a while. While we hear that it's great for the arms, it also provides them with a second source of income. Okay, that's actually a good thing on a personal level but it also means that he's liable to be less hungry. Let's hope he's still "got it" when he comes back. Following his victory against future tomato can Allen Briggs, David Sams decided that boxing was not the life for him and announced his retirement. Well, forget you as well, Mister Sams! Code:

I've made a little modification to my Python script that allows me to enter in the primary characteristics of the boxers if I want to. What this means is, I am now opening up the After the War dynasty for you, the reader, to add in your own guys! If that sounds like something you want to do, just post the following in this thread in the way of a character sheet:
Name: (insert name here) Nickname: (if you want one) Hometown: Skin color: (not used in determining ratings!) Style: Boxer, Slugger, or Either Handedness: L or R Punching Prowess: (Bad, Mediocre, Average, Good, Excellent) Hitting Power: (Bad, Mediocre, Average, Good, Excellent) Heart: (Bad, Mediocre, Average, Good, Excellent) Defense: (Bad, Mediocre, Average, Good, Excellent) Origin story: Bear in mind that we're operating in the year 1867 but other than that feel free to get creative. ************** A word on creativity: those of you who remember the ill-fated OT universe known as OT Nemesis Boxing (ill-fated in that it was totally wiped out in the Great Crash of 2005) know that I am big on creativity. Simply put, the better/funnier/more fistic the boxer you put together is, the better he will be. Conversely, if you create a guy named Greaty McGreaterson and list his origin as "HE GRATEST OF ALL TIEM!!!!11!", he'll probably become a tomato can, even if you set all his characteristics to "Excellent". That's because I will move them down to poor. This also applies to setting actions in between months. If you want to tell your boxer to do something, just post that he's doing it and I'll post the results shortly. If the task he's doing hasn't been used before by someone else, you'll probably get a decent-sized bump to your boxer's abilities. If it has, whatever gains you get will probably be compensated for elsewhere. If you're just copying other people, expect your boxer to get worse. Don't expect changing a couple words around to count as something entirely new, either. For example: CONN CHRIS tells me that his boy Candy Jack Jacoby gets high on nutmeg before fights, which infuses him with robustness and makes him punch harder. I give Candy Jack a +2 to his Hitting Power. Stupid Johnny Slick (to pick out a name at random) then comes around and says "Okay, my guy Ulysses Simpson sniffs oleander". Oops! Ulysses found out that oleander makes his knees wobbly and just permanently lost 3 points of Avoid Knockdown. Make sense? Then make your characters and get it on!

As expected, Frank Seiler gave up the 5 Boroughs Class Ring just as soon as he won it. I guess it was a little bit surprising that he lost it to Thomas McConkey, whose best attribute is his name. McConkey took an early lead and we saw why Seiler now has more career losses than wins: he was flat-out unable to punch himself back into the fight. If he wants another chance, he'll have to work his way up to get it now.
It was a bit of a disappointing month, actually. We're still watching Captain Jack O'Rourke, but his inability to soundly defeat tomato can Christian Barrett tells us that maybe he's not an upper echelon fighter after all. Sure is fun to watch though. Oscar Thompson also continued to win, which is just plain weird: we see the guy fall down all the time in sparring sessions, but when it comes to actual fights for actual money, he's been dropped just two times in eight fights. We will grant you that he didn't get up either time. We're just saying, it's curious. Is he hiding something in practice? Now he's the #2 contender for the 5 Boroughs Class Ring. I guess we'll find out soon enough. Code:
Date Winner W-L-D K Loser W-L-D K Venue Group Significance Matchup Result 3/1/1867 Cap'n Jack 4-0-0 2 Chris Barrett 1-7-0 1 Frank's Beginners D D MD It still shows up as a win in the standings is the best thing we can say about this one. 3/15/1867 Harley Jackson 2-0-1 Willie Burciaga 0-1-0 Frank's Beginners B C UD This one was close for a unanimous decision; Burciaga threw 20% more punches per round but landed fewer. 3/15/1867 Tom Reid 1-3-0 1 Glass Joe 0-2-0 Frank's Beginners D C KO1 Seeing two bad fighters going at it is technically a close matchup, but is it the kind of matchup you want to see? 3/15/1867 Milton Harris 1-0-1 Robert Baynham 2-4-0 Frank's Beginners C A UD Harris may have won the fight, but the next night Baynham was out at the bar while Harris was home nursing concussion. 3/15/1867 Don Flamenco 2-2-0 Julius Perry 2-1-0 1 Frank's Beginners C C UD Flamenco built an early lead and then ran away from Perry for the rest of the fight. Flamenco is annoying. 3/15/1867 Oscar Thompson 6-2-0 1 Mike Reynolds 4-5-1 2 Frank's New York B B UD We're told that Thompson will go down when he's looked at hard, but we haven't seen that yet. 3/15/1867 Thomas McConkey 3-5-0 Frank Seiler 5-6-2 1 Frank's Beginners A B UD Well, that was quick. Seiler probably shouldn't be called "The Club". More like "The Noodle". Code:

A quick note/apology!
Sorry, fight fans. My computer died a couple weeks ago and I just recently got the graphics card replaced. Also, I thought I had done something stupid that would have made me have to retrace a lot of this work, but as it turns out I did not.
