1873 National Association Preview

After having 6 teams disband over the past year leaving just 5 teams remaining, the upcoming 1873 campaign sees the addition of 4 new teams. They are the Marylands of Baltimore, the Resolutes of Elizabeth, the Whites of Philadelphia, and the Blue Legs of Washington.

Baltimore Canaries: In order to expect to win anything, you have to improve your team and the club from Baltimore didn’t do anything meaningful to improve their club.

C: Dick Higham (.317, 31 RBI, 47 R)
1B: Denny Mack (.217, 26 RBI, 34 R)
2B: Ed Beavens (.266, 36 RBI, 24 R)
3B: Ed Pinkham (.309, 3 HR & 31 RBI)
SS: Tom Carey (.320, 28 RBI, 40 R)
LF: Harry Berthrong (.248, 27 RBI, 40)
CF: Joe Simmons (11-47, 13 RBI with OLY and ECK last yr)
RF: Herm Doscher (.270, 12 RBI, 16 R)

SP: Bobby Mathews (23-27, 2.78 ERA)

Baltimore Marylands: A club with players that have played in the Association before, but not enough talent to compete.

C: Tommy Beals (5-41 last yr with NYU & OLY last yr)
1B: Jim Foran (11-23 last yr with TRO)
2B: Bob Ferguson (.277, 11 RBI, 15 R with Baltimore Canaries last yr)
3B: Fred Waterman (.333, 12 RBI, 28 R with TRO last yr)
SS: Mike McGeary (.281, 17 RBI with NAT, OLY & ECK last yr)
LF: Steve King (.366, 27 RBI, last yr with TRO)
CF: Paul Hines (1-11 last yr with BOS & NAT last yr)
RF: Clipper Flynn (.271, 28 RBI with ATH last yr)

SP: Ed Stratton (rookie)
SP: Asa Brainard (7-4 in 20 games with OLY & MAN last yr)

Boston Red Stockings:
Lets see, a team that has won two straight National Association championships, how could they have possibly improved? Well, they did by adding up and coming star 1B Jim O’Rourke and star RF Lip Pike. But with the addition of O’Rourke, that also means that George Wright will have no place to play as a regular and will ride the bench. In addition to that, they have the trio McVey, Barnes, and Wood returning. The team from Boston will definitely be in the hunt for its 3rd straight title.

C: Cal McVey (.350, 52 RBI, 46 R, 30 SB)
1B: Jim O’Rourke (.336, 12 RBI with MAN last yr)
2B: Jimmy Wood (.321, 35 RBI, 47 R)
3B: Ross Barnes (.456, 45 RBI, 71 R, 103 H, 28 SB)
SS: John Radcliff (.312, 27 RBI, 48 R)
LF: Doug Allison (.372, 2 HR & 14 RBI)
CF: Harry Wright (.307, 34 RBI, 39 R)
RF: Lip Pike (.417, 23 RBI, 24 R with Cleveland last yr)

SP: Al Spalding (32-14, 3.33 ERA last yr and 54-23 lifetime record)

Brooklyn Atlantics: Can the now 17 year Jim Britt pitch well enough this year for his team to win the Association? In reality, probably not, but, you never know.

C: Deacon White (.316, 26 RBI, 42 R with OLY, NAT & BRA last yr)
1B: Charlie Gould (.300, 20 RBI, 43 R)
2B: Jack Burdock (.260, 27 RBI, 37 R)
3B: Henry Burroughs (.209, 6 RBI, 13 R with OLY & NYU last yr)
SS: Ed Duffy (.252, 9 RBI, 18 R with TRO and BLC last yr)
LF: Al Thake (.354, 34 RBI, 38 R)
CF: Tom Foley (.250, 26 RBI, 30 R with OLY and BRA last yr)
RF: Al Reach (.227, 15 RBI, 20 R with NAT and ECK last yr)

SP: Jim Britt (14-23, 3.07 ERA as a 16 year old)

Elizabeth Resolutes:
With rookie Ken Lovett on the mound, the club from Elizabeth, New Jersey will probably struggle to compete.

C: Charlie Hodes (3-11 last yr with CLE)
1B: Everett Mills (.380, 18 RBI last yr with CLE)
2B: Eddie Booth (.261, 8 RBI, 25 R with MAN last yr)
3B: Steve Bellan (.336, 16 RBI, 33 R with TRO last yr)
SS: Ham Allen (.311, 12 RBI, 21 R with MAN last yr)
LF: Ned Cuthbert (.267, 20 RBI, 22 R with CLE last yr)
CF: Scott Hastings (.236, 20 RBI, 22 R with TRO last yr)
RF: Elmer White (3-12 last yr with CLE)

SP: Ken Lovett (rookie)

New York Mutuals: The biggest signing for the Mutuals was definitely the one that brought Cap Anson to New York. Also, they add Andy Leonard and George Hall. These three players immediately boost this team’s chances to win the Association.

C: Tom Barlow (.283, 22 RBI, 32 R with BRA last yr)
1B: Bill Allison (1-6 last yr with ECK)
2B: Bob Addy (.348, 40 RBI, 54 R, 94 H)
3B: Cap Anson (.409, 31 RBI, 31 R last yr with TRO)
SS: Andy Leonard (.319, 21 RBI, 32 R with OLY, NAT & ECK last yr)
LF: Tom York (18-50 last yr with NAT & BRA last yr)
CF: George Hall (.374, 25 RBI wit OLY, NAT & ECK last yr)
RF: Bill Boyd (.360, 32 RBI, 49 R)

SP: Candy Cummings (23-26, 3.26 ERA)
SP: Rynie Wolters (2-5, 2 SV, 2.78 ERA in 31 G last yr)

Philadelphia Athletics: Here is a team that went out and brought in star 3B Ezra Sutton who forces former 3B Levi Meyerle to RF. Also, they sign star CF Fred Treacey. I don’t know, but maybe they should have horded a couple more pitchers.

C: John Clapp (.282, 14 RBI with MAN last yr)
1B: John Glenn (.267, 30 RBI, 47 R)
2B: Wes Fisler (.282, 41 RBI, 41 R)
3B: Ezra Sutton (.310, 18 RBI, 21 R with CLE last yr)
SS: Jimmy Hallinan (.316, 2 HR & 33 RBI, 47 R)
LF: George Bechtel (.353, 2 HR & 40 RBI, 56 R)
CF: Fred Treacey (.404, 18 RBI, 26 R with TRO last yr)
RF: Levi Meyerle (.366, 2 HR & 43 RBI, 49 R)

SP: George Zettlein (27-22 in 2 yrs with CNA and TRO)
SP: Dick McBride (23-21, 3.45 ERA last yr with PNA)
SP: Al Pratt (12-7, 2.64 last yr with CLE)
SP: Cherokee Fisher (3-0 in 13 games last yr with TRO)

Philadelphia Whites: For the new club from Philadelphia, the Whites, they have uncertainty as for who the starting pitcher on the team will be. Will it be Stearns or Malone? Other than that, this club doesn’t have much in the way of offensive threats besides Birdsall.

C: Dave Birdsall (.322, 19 RBI, 21 SB with CLE last yr)
1B: Bub McAtee (5-21 last yr with OLY and ECK)
2B: Jim Hall (.249, 25 RBI, 22 R with BRA last yr)
3B: Jim Clinton (11-35 with ECK last yr)
SS: Jim Holdsworth (.278, 13 RBI with CLE last yr)
LF: John McMullin (.231, 10 RBI with CLE last yr)
CF: Candy Nelson (20-51, 8 RBI last yr with ECK)
RF: Jim Devlin (rookie)

SP: Martin Malone (15-10, 2.58 ERA last yr with ECK)
SP: Bill Stearns (0-2, 3.45 in 11 G last yr with OLY and MAN)

Washington Blue Legs: Another team that just wont have enough talent to compete in the Association.

C: Harry Schafer (.319, 9 RBI with TRO last yr)
1B: Joe Start (.324, 25 RBI, 32 R with NAT & ECK last yr)
2B: John Donnelly (rookie)
3B: Frank Selman (.296, 24 RBI, 45 R with NYU last yr)
SS: Jim Snyder (5-36 last yr with ECK)
LF: Jim Tipper (.308, 18 RBI with MAN last yr)
CF: George Bird (2-6 last yr with TRO)
RF: Gat Stires (.240, 12 RBI with CLE last yr)

SP: John Greason (rookie)

Boston wins the most lopsided game in National Association history.

Can anyone tell me how to get the image so it doesn't start so far down the page?!?!

After a hot start and then falling back, the New York Mutuals have surged back into 2nd place and are only 3 games back of the Boston Red Stockings. 3 Feats to Watch For in October

1. Can Ross Barnes finish with an On Base Percentage (OBP) over .500?
The Boston third baseman currently has an OBP of .502, but with 14 games left in October, it might be tough for Barnes to keep that above .500.

2. Will the Boston Red Stockings be caught in the standings?
The Red Stockings have 14 games left and the 2nd place New York Mutuals have 7 games left on their respective schedules. The Red Stockings lead is 7.5 games, so mathematically, the Mutuals are not out of the Association race. Albeit, it will take a huge collapse from the Boston club for the Mutuals to take the crown.

3. Who will finish with the most RBI's at the end of the season?
This seems like a two man race between Boston's Cal McVey (53 RBI) and New York's George Hall (50 RBI). Clearly, if you were to place a wager on this, your money would have to go with McVey as his team has the twice the amount of games left then the Mutuals do.

Cal McVey and George Hall

How are you taking screen shots? The pictures you are posting have a huge block of white space at the top of them because they are part of the picture. Its like you saved the picture with a bunch of extra space on top.

If you use alt+print screen you should be able to take a screenshot of just your OOTP game. Then, put it into whatever program you use and save it as an image.

What I have been doing is alt+print screen to take the screenshot and then going into Paint and cropping the image to take away top part of the screenshot that says your league name, your name, etc.. and the bottom part of the screenshot which says all the different league tasks. I thought by doing that I could make the image smaller but it still shows up with the box as big as the original size. Thats what all the white space is, thats the area I cropped out parts of the image from.

Now, if its not possible to get it without all that white space, I will just use the whole screenshot.

Another year is in the books, another Red Stockings championship. That makes 3 in a row for the club from Boston. The whole year the Red Stockings were the class of the league. Al Spalding led the league in wins, Ross Barnes led in about every offensive category.

1873 Notable Free Agents

Sorry bout the absence, NCAA 08 came out and I was hooked on that.

Now I'm going to list some of the notable free agents:

3B Ross Barnes- Easily the top player out there on the free agent market, will the league batting champ resign with the 3 time champion Boston Red Stockings and suit up in another uniform next year.

SP Bobby Mathews- Maybe getting out of Baltimore will do wonders for the 22 year old. He has pitched every single game for the Canaries the last 2 years and for his career has posted a 52-71 record and 81 K.

LF Steve King- A lifetime .349 hitter, King could be a valuable piece to a contending team.

RF Ralph Ham- After leading the Association in batting average in 1871, Ham fell off the map and had just 18 AB the next year (1872) and last year hit .255 in 22 games with the Elizabeth Resolutes. But from his past performance in 1871, there's no doubt this player can swing a bat.

To get past the cropping issue

1) Highlight the part you want to keep. (The pics?)
2) Edit/Copy or Edit/Cut
3) Start a new image (File/New)
4) Edit/Paste
5) Save the new image (.jpg or .png I'd say)

That still doesnt seem to work for me so I'll just post the whole screenshots with no cropping.

As for the league I will have the 1874 NA Preview up later tonight, like around 1 or 2 AM.

1874 National Association Preview

We have arrived at the start of the 1874 campaign, but three teams that participated in 1873 will not be continuing operations this year. There are the Washington Blue Legs, Elizabeth Resolutes, and Baltimore Marylands. But, as always, there are some new teams coming into the Association, one being the familiar Chicago White Stockings, (who are back after a devastating fire in 1871 that destroyed the city), and the Hartford Dark Blues.

Baltimore Canaries: Here’s at team that sees their starting pitcher Bobby Mathews bolt to Boston (god knows why?) leaving them without a starter. So, Ben Laughlin will step up to the role of starting pitcher for the club.

C: Dick Higham (.280, 37 RBI, 44 R)
1B: Jack Manning (rookie)
2B: Ed Beavens (.254, 49 RBI, 36 R)
3B: Ed Pinkham (.317, 37 RBI, 42 R)
SS: Tom Carey (.286, 36 RBI, 48 R)
LF: Jim Tipper (.286, 23 RBI, 27 R with WBL last yr)
CF: Joe Battin (4-22, 3 RBI with RES last yr)
RF: Herm Doscher (.301, 36 RBI, 46 R)

SP: Ben Laughlin (rookie pitcher, 0-3 last yr batting)

Boston Red Stockings: Fans of the Red Stockings were a bit worried in the offseason when Ross Barnes was being pursued by other teams, but in the end, the Association MVP resigned with Boston.

C: Cal McVey (.364, 61 RBI, 68 R)
1B: Jim O’Rourke (.348, 56 RBI, 74 R)
2B: Jimmy Wood (.296, 1 HR & 50 RBI, 76 R, 21 SB)
3B: Ross Barnes (.456, 1 HR & 58 RBI, 81 R, .648 SLG)
SS: John Radcliff (.294, 1 HR & 50 RBI, 62 R)
LF: Doug Allison (17-61, 15 RBI, 14 R)
CF: Harry Wright (.292, 40 RBI, 51 R)
RF: Lip Pike (.324, 1 HR & 50 RBI, 57 R)

SP: Al Spalding (94-35 record, 84 K, 2.93 ERA career)

Brooklyn Atlantics: Here’s a club with no offense except for catcher Deacon White. On the pitching mound once again will be Jim Britt, now 18 yrs old. He will be pressed for the starting job though as newcomer Tommy Bond, an Irishman, joins the club.

C: Deacon White (.322, 1 HR & 35 RBI, 49 R)
1B: Charlie Gould (.287, 1 HR & 38 RBI, 39 R)
2B: Al Reach (16-48, 10 RBI, 9 R)
3B: Henry Burroughs (.283, 1 HR & 30 RBI, 34 R)
SS: Ham Allen (.246, 1 HR & 13 RBI, 17 R)
LF: Al Thake (.307, 41 RBI, 49 R)
CF: Tom Foley (.249, 21 RBI, 41 R)
RF: Jack Remsen (.281, 31 RBI, 27 R)

SP: Jim Britt (32-58 record, 3.11 ERA, 65 K in 2 yrs)
SP: Tommy Bond (rookie)

Chicago White Stockings: After 2 years out of the Association, the White Stockings have returned with a new ballpark and a entirely new team. With some notables on this team, they could be a surprise finisher this year.
C: Harry Schafer (.329, 25 RBI, 27 R with WBL last yr)
1B: Everett Mills (.336, 11 RBI, 20 R with RES last yr)
2B: Scott Hastings (32-83, 13 RBI, 13 R with RES last yr)
3B: Fred Waterman (5-28, 3 RBI, 3 R with MAR last yr)
SS: John Peters (rookie)
LF: John McMullin (.217, 34 RBI, 38 R with PWS last yr)
CF: Art Allison (28-77, 10 RBI, 13 R with Mutuals last yr)
RF: Gat Stires (.277, 21 RBI, 37 R with WBL last yr)

SP: Ed Stratton (3-1, 3.22 ERA, last yr with MAR)
SP: Asa Brainard (23-15, 2.96 ERA in 3 seasons)

Hartford Dark Blues: The club from Hartford, Connecticut is the only actual new member to the Association. They did go out and sign 1B Jim Foran, LF Steve King, and RF Ralph Ham.

SP: Rynie Wolters (41-31, 2.98 ERA, 49 K in 3 seasons)

Philadelphia Athletics: A team that has a ton of talent on the offensive side of the ball. On the pitching side, they have George Zettlein, Dick McBride, and Cherokee Fisher. The only question is: Who will the actual pitcher be during the season?

C: John Clapp (.281, 30 RBI, 38 R)

SP: Dick McBride (36-39, 3.03 ERA, 55 K in 3 seasons)
SP: Cherokee Fisher (19-11, 2.00 ERA in 3 seasons)

Philadelphia Whites: Here is a club that didn’t do anything noteworthy in the offseason. NOTHING!

SP: Martin Malone (27-37, 3.58 ERA, 43 K in 2 seasons)

End of May 1874 Standings

Code:

Team………………………….W-L……...GB………Streak
Boston Red Stockings………13-5……...----…………W2
New York Mutuals…………....9-2……….0.5………..W4
Philadelphia Athletics……….10-4………1.0…………W3
Chicago White Stockings……3-3……….4.0…………W2
Baltimore Canaries…………...6-8……….5.0…………L2
Brooklyn Atlantics……………2-6………..6.0………....L6
Philadelphia Whites………….2-7………..6.5…………L2
Hartford Dark Blues………….0-10………9.0…………L10

We have arrived at the end of May and the Boston Red Stockings sit atop the standings, but are being hotly pursued by the Mutuals and Athletics.

Notes: Boston pitcher Al Spalding became the first pitcher to reach 100 career wins in Association history. Mutuals pitcher Len Lovett surprisingly leads the in ERA at 1.43 and has a 9-2 record. Cal McVey has 33 hits and 20 RBI, both Association bests.

Great read so far Powderguy, thanks for writing! Did you use a quickstart file for the 1871 start or did you set it up yourself? Been meaning to do this myself but just haven't found the time yet.

I used a 1871 quickstart that had all the players ready to draft, but deleted the schedule, and used the actual 1871 schedule and I had to manually create it. But with the players, alot of them imported with ratings at all the positions (which wasn't right), so I ended up re-importing all the 1871 players from the Lahman database one by one. But now every year, all the players have ratings at the right positions so that was the only problem I have had so far.
