I really feel for the expos.

I do believe if they could have held onto some players, fan interest would have remained. That, and the damn 94 strike...

Damn, judging by this board you'd think he Expos were the most popular team in baseball! I think Expos threads outnumber all others. If you guys would all buy tickets to their games, there would be no talks of contraction/relocation!

Didn't somedy mention that Vlad once said he'd leave MLB if the Expos were contracted? He's a good guy...
Ignorance is bliss.

How many players say "I don't want to leave here, I'm not about the money."? Lots of them. If someone offers him enough, he'll go, any sane person would. Making the most out of your job isn't being greedy, it's called being human.

Yeah I have to agree. The Expos get the most attention of any major league team on this board. The Yankees are a close second but most of those are people bashing them and then Yankee fans jumping to the defence.

It is sad to see such a popular, unique team be in such a perilous situation.

(about to go off on a tangent here, please ignore)

And Carplos you said it perfectly! All these people who get upset over baseball players being "greedy" forget that they are just human beings. Sorry to break this to everyone but as a human-animal we are by nature selfish (hence greedy). Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, is selfish in some way and you could even argue in every way. Some experts suggest even acts that appear selfless on the surface can be traced back to a selfish desire... that there is no such thing as a selfless act. Of course this becomes much more difficult to explain properly and involves some complex biological theories, terms etc. The root of it all is a desire to increase our fitness (reproductive success) however.

Anyway even people here have given clear benefits for Vlad to stay in Montreal. The fact that they are not financial does not make him any less "greedy" or any more "greedy" than the rest of us. They just mean he is human.

I also don't buy tickets because I live in Iowa.

I do try to watch the Expos when they are in Milwaukee, though - it's about the only way I can see them play (except TV obviously).

I'm glad to see there's plenty of support here for the Expos

The Expos do not have a tv deal in Montréal, so I can't see the games . Thanks to Loria... nobody wants to broadcast the games now...

I'm glad to see the support for the Expos. Granted, I talk about the Expos way too often (as it's the only team I really know a lot about), but I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one supporting them. If there are more threads about the Expos than anyboidy else it's simply due to the fact that the future of the franchise is being played out right now (even though we all know they'll move to DC in 2004 or 2005).

I think that the fact that everybody likes them comes from them being unique, victims and innocent. Unique because... well... they just are! Victims because of the strikes and their mediocre 90's owners. Innocent because, well, anyone has anything to say against the Expos? I agree, that was a very simplist evaluation of the situatuon, but I'll be glad to hear everybody else's take as to why the Expos have that image.

The Expos don't have a TV deal in their home city ???

Why is this, and could this be a major factor in the revenue problem?

Indeed it is. They don't have a TV contract, and I think they got a radio contract just before the season started - but it's a college radio station, right? (someone correct me if they know)

Not having a TV contract hurts, but I don't think it's the main factor. If there was one, it wouldn't be for much money, anyway.

As a Dodger fan I'm still glad the Dodger's signed Brown. It hasn't worked out the best for them but it's better than some of the moves they've made but if you never take a chance with big long term contracts you don't get a chance at a lot of quality players (Shawn Green). Also, signing Brown to that contract sent a message to the fans that the new ownership wasn't as penny pinching as the O'Malleys were. It may not have been the best move but I applaud them for at least making a move.

Wow, a Dodger fan that prefers the Fox style of franchise management over the O'Malleys? You are a rare one!

I'm not sure about the radio deal, though I doubt the fact that it would be colllege radio if it exists. I never listen to the radio so I don't know.

And ExposFan08, yes it's true that the Expos don't have a TV deal and it saddens me a lot as we have high quality commentators (Denis Casavant, all-star pitcher Claude Raymond). I think that it has a bigger impact than atomheart seems to think, because TV generates a buzz around the team, which is clearly what the Expos lack right now. I remember when the Expos were on the tube, a few years ago, the average Montrealer (or Quebecer, or Canadian...) could just stop flipping channels and watch a baseball game. Nowadays, unless you're a baseball fan, there's no way you're gonna watch a baseball game. That's how it is here... the average citizen doesn't care about baseball because it gets no exposure. Sad, I tell you...

I was just speaking of revenue, not fan interest and what-not.

I'm sure that TV time would help the Expos plight.

Well revenue is a consequence of fan interest... or am I not getting you?

I was speaking of TV revenue ($) providing more money to the Expos so they could keep some of the players they have.

I understand what you mean.

As for the radio deal, you mean to say you don't listen to them on the radio? Not even in the car? I could swear they had some college radio station playing their games. Can you look that up?

I checked it out and the Expos are on the radio. In Montréal they are on The Team 990 and CKAC 730 (in French). College radio.... I don't think it even exists over here.

I never listen to baseball on the radio because I like music better than baseball (the one thing I like more), so I listen to music! In the car... well... I don't have a car, so that solves the problem

I feel like a traitor or something not listening to baseball on the radio!
