Game #6 – Kansas City (Perez 1-0, 4.50 ERA) at Toronto (Ohka 1-0, 3.38 ERA)

Kansas City 4
Toronto 2
W: O. Perez (2-0) L: T. Ohka (1-1) S: O. Dotel (3)
HR – TOR: R. Shealy (1)

Perez pitched well, going 8 innings, and only giving up the 2 runs. Dotel came on in the 9th and walked 2, but buckled down for the save. Pretty balanced day for the lineup, with 5 batters collecting 2 hits.

Trade News

Texas has acquired LF Phil Nevin and minor league 2B Jose Campbasano from the White Sox. In return, Texas will send the Sox LF Frank Catalanotto, minor league C Miguel Chavarria, and $2.85 million.

Game #7 – Kansas City (J. Bale 1-0, 1.29 ERA) at Toronto (A. Burnett 0-1, 22.50 ERA)

I’m really liking the Spiezio and Koskie acquisitions. Koskie will probably only be around until July, though, as he wants to test the free agent market. Toronto had an interesting lineup, batting the speedster Frank Thomas first.

HR – KCA: M. Teahen (2) TOR: L. Overbay (3), G. Zaun (3), A. Rios (2)

We blew an 8-2 lead by giving up 3 in the 5th, 2 in the 6th, and 1 in the 7th, but we rallied for 3 in the top of the 8th for the win. Mark Teahen had a great day, going 3-4 with a double, triple, and a homer. He scored 3 runs and had 6 RBI. And if you’re scoring at home, that’s a series sweep. We’re now 5-3 and we head to Tampa Bay for a series that starts tomorrow.

Game #10 – Kansas City (J. Diaz) at Tampa Bay (B. Stokes 0-1, 8.22 ERA)

Kansas City 3
Tampa Bay 2
W: R. Braun (1-0) L: D. Miceli (0-2) S: O. Dotel (5)
HR – KC: S. Spiezio (7) TB: C. Crawford (2)

Diaz did ok for his first start. Buddy had him on a low pitch count as he tries to build up his endurance again. Being a reliever lately, we’re going to slowly ease him into the starter’s role. He pitched 3 2/3 innings today, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits, walking 3 and striking out 3. Stokes for Tampa Bay pitched well. He went 7 innings, gave up 2 hits, and 2 runs—courtesy of Spiezio’s 7th homer of the season. He also struck out 5 and walked 1.

Weekly Thoughts
We had a great week, going 5-1, losing our first game of the week. I know our 5 straight wins have been again Toronto and Tampa Bay, but it’s still a 5 game winning streak. We currently sit ½ game back of the Twins. We’re scoring a lot of runs, but we’re giving up a lot as well. We’re 3rd in the AL in runs scored, but 14th in the AL in ERA. Our bullpen ERA is 7.09. We demoted Ken Ray and called up David Riske to try and remedy that situation. Riske was 1-0 with a 1.35 ERA in 6.2 innings in Omaha.

AL Player of the Week
Our very own Scott Spiezio! This week he hit .385 with 5 HR, 12 RBI, and 8 runs scored.

NL Player of the Week

Chipper Jones (ATL) 11-29, 9 RBI, 5 runs scored, 4 HR

Game #11 – Kansas City (O. Perez 2-0, 3.38 ERA) at Tampa Bay (C. Fossum 0-1, 1.02 ERA)

Kansas City 7
Tampa Bay 8 (10)
W: R. Lugo (1-0) L: O. Dotel (0-1)
HR – KC: M. Teahen (3) TB: D. Young 2 (3)

Hmmm…..Fossum again? I know they’re desperate while Kazmir is still day-to-day, but to start a guy twice in three games? I’m not too sure about that. Just as confusing were some of Buddy’s decisions. He pinch hit Costa and Clapinski in the top of the 9th. In the bottom of the 9th, Costa played left and Spiezio moved to first, which was fine. But he put Clapinski behind the plate. Dotel gave up a 2-run, 2-out homer to Young to tie the game. He then gave up a full count, 2-out RBI double to Jorge Cantu in the bottom of the 10th.

Bale just never got settled early, giving up 2 runs in each of the first 2 innings. Santana didn’t even pitch that well, going 6.2 innings, giving up 8 hits and 4 runs. However, we just never could get the lead. We did tie it at 4 once, but couldn’t get the go-ahead run home from 3rd with 1 out.

Not able to score someone from third with one out? Buddy Bell playing someone out of position? Sounds entirely too realistic to me!

KUTGW, Dauis!

Game #13 – Kansas City (Z. Greinke 0-2, 15.68 ERA) at Minnesota (P. Munro 0-1, 3.68 ERA)

Kansas City 6
Minnesota 5 (12)
W: O. Dotel (1-1) L: D. Reyes (0-1) S: J. Peralta (1)
HR – KC: D. Ross (2), C. Koskie (2)

The guys did a heck of a job coming from behind, with Koskie hitting a 2 run homer in the 8th and Ross hitting another 2 run homer in the 9th to send it to extras. Dotel really stepped up and pitched 3.2 innings of 1 hit ball, even getting out of a jam with Mauer on 3rd and nobody out in the 11th.

Thanks for the comments RB. If there's anything else you wanna know about the team or the league, let me know and I'll post it for ya. Obviously what I think is important might not be to other people, and what other people think is important might not be to me. So if anyone wants to know about other players, teams, etc. let me know.

Weekly Thoughts
An ok week, going 3-3. We’re still in second in the division, but we’re 1.5 games behind the best team in baseball, the Minnesota Twins. We’re also ½ game behind the Yankees for the Wild Card, but it’s way too early to think about division and wild card races. Our offense still ranks in the top 3 in the AL in most categories. Our pitching is still struggling, but it’s slowly improving. Greinke, Wellemeyer, and Soria are the 3 that are struggling the most, but I think they’ve got the ability to recover from that. German, while not hitting above .400 anymore, is still hitting a very nice .388. Koskie at .318 and Spiezio at .306 are our only batters above .300. Like I continue to say, I know it’s early, but I’m excited at the direction this team is taking.

We traded minor league CF Kerry Robinson to the Atlanta Braves, for SP prospects Beau Jones and Jake Stevens, and a gamble in SP Isauro Pineda, a 28-year-old minor leaguer who we think still has quite a bit of potential. We hope a change of scenery will benefit him.

We also demoted Jose Diaz and called up MR Leo Nunez. Yep, that means we’re going to try the closer-as-a-starter experiment. Dotel will move into the #5 spot in the rotation until one of our minor league starters is ready to be called up. Joel Peralta will move into the closer role.

AL Player of the Week
Manny Ramirez (BOS) .529, 2 HR, 6 R, and 6 RBI.

NL Player of the Week
Adrian Gonzalez (SD) 27 AB, 5 R, 14 H, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 5 BB, 1 K, .594 OBP.

Oakland MR Justin Duchscherer has been diagnosed with bronchitis and will be day-to-day for the next 1-2 weeks.

An ugly, ugly game. Buehrle pitched a complete game 5-hitter, striking out 5 and walking 1. Nothing more needs to be said.

Our pitching staff has come completely unglued the first 2 games of this series. Jermaine Dye had a fun day against our pitching, going 4-5 with a double, homer, 2 runs scored, and 4 RBI.
