All of this is true, and I never intended to "cheat." Cheats in games is a very slippery slope for me, and I want to keep my experience on the pure side. The retro-DL option would have been nice had I run into problems, but it worked out more or less OK.

For those interested, I never sent him down or to the DL. He sat on the bench and I went to a 4-man rotation. I sent a bench fielder down and added my new FA as another reliever. This brought me to 14 pitchers for about 5 days (for an unrelated but equally trying situation). When my other starter (#3, not the ace) came off the DL, I dealt one of my relievers for some minor leaguers and moved my new FA to the 'pen. I was then carrying 13 pitchers for another 5 days until my ace got healthy and I sent another reliever down, and called the bench player back up.

We went 5-4 over those 10 days and were still in first by .5 games. Fun game!

If you want to be playing the game "by the rules," you either have to DL him, or he eats a roster spot. Anything else, and you're just cheating the game.

If you want to give yourself a "retroactive DL," you could DL him, then when you need him off the DL, go into commish mode and change his remaining DL time.

At least then you'd be following real-world rules.

This is genius. Although, I'd prolly just go into commish when I DL him and make it for

A related question: Will the game let you trade an injured player?

This follows MLB rules which state that an injured player cannot be traded without the express permission of the Commissioner.

But the only way an injury is determined in the bigs is if it is reported. In other words, it's not at all hard for players with muscle pulls and d2d things to be traded; in fact, I'd guess it happens all the time. It's not like many guys in MLB are truly 100% healthy come July. But a GM that wanted to trade a guy wouldn't make any official moves that denote a guy as injured; he'd just tell the other GM the deal. What counts as "injured" anyway...I'm not too familiar with the rule?

Besides, just because MLB has an annoying rule doesn't mean that OOTP should follow it. That's the great thing about these games--we can model all the best parts of reality and do away with the worst!

It does happen, of course- Erik Cordier and Chris Denorfia are examples of guys traded in 2007 while injured.

In terms of the DL, be glad you're playing under current rules (in place since 1990). If you were playing pre-1990 rules, you'd be limited in terms of the number of players that could be put onto the DL and the stay on the DL was longer in some cases.

Staring in 1981, there were four disabled lists: a regular DL lasting 21 days and which had a limit of three players; a supplemental DL which lasted 15 days and was limited to one non-pitcher; a special DL for use only when the prior two were full, it lasted 21 days and had a limit of one player; and lastly there was the emergency 60-day DL.

In 1984 the supplemental DL was changed to allow two players on it (but only one of whom could be a pitcher), and the special DL was changed to require a 30 day stay.

In 1990 the system was simplified to the current 15- and 60-day DLs.

What advantages does the 60-day DL buy a team rather than the 15 day DL?

If I had a player that was injured for a month or even two months, I would be tempted to just put him on the 15-day DL and let him sit there until healed. Otherwise, on the 60-day DL he might heal earlier than his DL time was up.

A player on the 60-day DL does not use a 40-man roster spot; a player on the 15-day DL does. If your 40-man is maxed out, and you have an injury, you might need to free up a 40-man spot in order to call up a suitable replacement.
