OOTPBB 2006 Upload Reports Super Fast Tutorial - Page 2

Well I have the tar file uploaded, along with the setup.php, and after pointing to the setup file and having a whole string of stuff shown (just like the photo) I still dont have a site. It doesnt seem to have unpacked the file. I dont know what is going on at this point.

If the reasoning for using tar.gz is just to have smaller archives, people might want to look into the 7z format. For example, in a test of the sizes of compressed archives for a full 6.5 lg folder I got the following results:

zip: 13.435 MB
rar: 12.337 MB
tar.gz: 7.478 MB, 6:04 minutes tarring, 1:33 minutes gzipping, 7:37 minutes total using PowerArchiver 6.1
7z: 4.613 MB, 5:49 minutes using 7zip 4.42

People should also note that while tar.gz can be smaller than zip and rar because it first archives all the files into 1 file then compresses that 1 file rather than those methods of compressing individual files and then archiving them, the "drawbacks to a GZiped Tar archive is that you can not add files to or extract individual files from an already existing archive. One file can be extracted from the archive but not quickly as Gzip will uncompress the whole archive for tar to then search for and extract a single file."

Why the 7z format is so much smaller and faster or what drawbacks it has, I don't know. The free 7zip program can also tar.gz, but you need to do the tarring and gzipping steps separately.

EDIT: I originally mistakenly said tar.gz was faster than zip and rar when I meant to say smaller.

Does the mac have a program that will compress into the tar.gz format? If so you would just replace the powerarchiver program with the appropriate program for the mac and proceed from there. The uncompressing happens at the server side.

I might be wrong here but I had the same problem and when I contacted my hosting company they told me they do not support server side decompression.

Found it and i found a tar app but it does seem to be uncompressing the archive on the server. Oh well.

I don't commish anymore and I won't be with 2006. For 6.5 and earlier, though, I had a step by step sim checklist for absolutely everything in a sim and batch files for as much as I possibly could automate. We also differed by using the free OLS which has a script that runs every 15 minutes to decompress a specially named zip instead of using a setup.php file. We did a lot of different things, but all of it together really did cut down on the sim time. If I was a 2006 commish, I'd look into sim checklists, batch files, .7z, and the OLS all as options.

No offense to Fidel (he's put together a great tutorial there and should be commended for it), I just think some of it might be more work than necessary. But hey, maybe you can't server side decompress .7z files, maybe .zips and .rars are just too big, maybe the OLS just isn't an option for some, maybe there is no way to use a batch file for .tar.gzs, maybe batch files are too complicated for some people, maybe for some reason you do want to use the copy buttons. The more options, the better though.

If it means anything, all sites at www.allsimbaseball.com are equipped with server side unzip at the touch of a button by the administrator of the site, for what it's worth.

The tutorial I made was for the general public. Hopefully it's of some value to others struggling with upload times.

I'm sure it will be and thanks again for going through the trouble of making and posting it. For those of us who had the old system down pat it shouldn't take too much to get used to the new options, but for those who are completely new to it I feared it all might be just too complicated without a tutorial like this. Heck, when I was first looking at it even I was a little lost!

With my previous post I just wanted to note that once people do figure out at least one way to do it, that they might want to explore some other ways that may or may not be even better for them.

If people are curious about some other things we used to do, they can search for posts on the old online leagues board by, among others, fidel, myself, DaveHorn, and PLG. I learned most of what I used to do regarding the above topics from those last two gentlemen.

Did you highlight all of the files you wanted to include before clicking add?

Also, just wanted to say this is awesome! I was using an unzip cgi and this program has cut down on that time even more.
