I am real excited to use this data base but I am so damn confused. I am used to doing it with the csv and importing everything. Walk me through this AROD. Say I want to start a league in 1903 what do I need to do. I used to just unzip the db into a folder I called stats. I know you said earlier to unzip into the OOTP directory but where exactly and when I am on the screen to start the dynasty what do I put down as the path to data base? I am sure I seem like a moron just not used to doing it this way. Thanks for whatever help you can give me

What he means by the OOTP directory is that you should unzip to something like C:\Program Files\Out of the Park Developments\OOTP 6.5. After unzipping to that directory, you should see a folder called league-name-here.lg. Not quite sure what they named it.
You then go to OOTP and select "open league." The league which you want to open should be listed there. Hope that helps. |

By the way, this only applies to the Normalized DB, the other DBs contain csv files for importing. Last edited by arod23; 11-21-2005 at 09:25 AM. |

Thanks SF. I tried that and thought I had it but it still did not work. I unzipped into OOTP6.5 and then I went to OPEN LEAGUE and nothing new appeared. I then renamed the file to put a .lg on the end. That worked and showed up when I hit OPEN league however when I opened it the league was blank, no players, no teams etc. I know I am doing something wrong. Somebody please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! lol Thanks in advance

Maybe that is it. I think I downloaded the wrong thing because the two I did both have just csv files in them with no league folder. Arod can you tell me which one I am supposed to download? On your webpage there are a few of them. I downloaded the last two. Thanks again

For the NORMALIZED league file, on the download page, click on: ARod23 All-Time Best Normalized League File (v.3.0, updated 6-14-05) You may see some csv files in the league file, but they are not used for importing. Those were used by us to easily modify names, ratings etc. |

Here's the league settings (using 100000), i'm using in my historical replay using the ArodGarlon DB. They worked out well in testing (with just computer managers). This time round Im running a team. (using OOTP5)

Here's the rest of the settings. Again Im using 00TP5. (fictional ballparks/draft league/no financial).
The only other changes was I added a few ( really bad) players to each team in 1901 to give each team the same amount of players. Each decade was done with a new import & draft. The only players I really saw any problems with (in the test runs) were Babe Ruth (small underperformance) & Dizzy Dean ,( underperformed to the extreme - only 2 complete years on major roster with a career 14-34 7.15), Satchel Paige (over performed), and a few misused/mismanaged players (it's the computers fault!!!!). Of course a few players ended up on teams that didnt need them and didnt trade them until they were long pass their prime. ![]() Of course Babe Ruth not playing in Yankee staduim could of effected his output some. (still he hit 522 HR's with a .302BA) Just didnt have any really big years. (George) Ruth as a pitcher was overall a flop (he was on a team that never finished with a losing record while he was there) 14-5, 11-15, 6-19, 0-11, and finished with a 40-79 record after 10 years. It was fun.....but now im looking forward to the new version (OOTP2006).

plannine - A couple things about the engine settings:
If you want to do a single-season replay, the numbers that the will turn up in the game engine after you import the season should work fine. For a career league however, everyone's league will evolve in a slightly different way. So there are no engine settings that are a sure thing to work. If you want historical accuracy, use Iatric's Era Calculator. The Era Calculator will calculate the engine totals you need based after each season by comparing your league's batting totals to the expected ratios and then adjusting the next season's totals +/- in each category. Babe Ruth wouldn't have been affected by not playing in a HR friendly park since the stats in the DB are not park-adjusted. For historical replays set all park ratings to 100, or just use th generic Old League Park for every team. It is very difficult to get Babe Ruth to become a 700 HR hitter while keeping the league ratios in line with historical accuracy. I'm hoping with this next DB we're doing he will turn out a bit better. I set his rookie season to 85% of his career 162 game average and set his 1916-1917 season to his 162-game average. As for Dizzy Dean, I've seen him become absolutely dominant and I have seen him become a total bust. That's just part of the randomness of OOTP. I did make Satchel Paige very strong. The last league I played using the Era Calculator, Paige was pretty much always in the top 3 in earned run average and at the top in K's, but I thought his totals looked acceptable. You could always edit paige and turn him into a clone of Lefty Grove or someone. I'm planning to have new Era Calculator files ready when we finish he next DB. It will have a new initratings.txt file with the correct totals for initializing a league in any season calculated using 100,000 AB. And I will also include a couple of different mlbactuals.txt files, which the Era Calculator looks at when calculating the next season's engine totals...one kind will have the actual yearly historical totals, and another will go by 5-year averages. For the 5-year average version it makes groups of 5 year spans all appear to have played the same...so 1915-1919 will all play roughly the same, and then 1920-1924 will be the next span, then 1925-1930, and so on. The reason for doing this is that OOTP seems to work better when trying to get consistent totals over stretches of years. This sort of limits spike seasons like 1930...1930 won't play to such high offensive totals, but then again 1931-1934 will be slightly above how they performed since all 5 of these years are averaged together. I am also going to suggest that for anyone using our next DB, that they expand the league from 16 teams to 20 teams probably by 1915 since we have included so many Negro league players based on so many great players. Expanding by 4 teams should produce better results and provide enough room for all the talent in the league. |

I've never used a database before, but is there anyway to import certain players, maybe a couple a year, into my league? I'm running a solo fictional league, but thought it might be interesting to add some of my personal favorites to the league every once in a while. If so, could someone walk me through it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Ever though the DB has alot of cup of coffee players left out, most last longer then they actully did in the majors. I've been looking at adding Montoya's Japanese set to the mix at some point. But not sure how they will fit in, but with expansion after every 20 year, they should mix well.

Alright, a couple of things:
First, I'm using the random debut DB and i'm importing a few players at a time into my fictional league to spice things up. So far, all of the hitters have imported alright, but when I imported pitchers their control talent was set at 1. I imported Clemens, Mathewson, Nolan Ryan, Cy Young, and Satchel Paige. The first time I imported Paige, his talents were something like 60, 70, 60 or so and he was 41 years old. So, I deleted him and imported him again and his control rating was set at 1, like the others. Is he supposed to be 41 when he's imported? I thought I read something about all negro league players having a career span of 15 years, so I figured he would import at a younger age. Second, is there a way to import only a few players at a time into my fictional league using the normalized DB? I tried doing it the same way as the random debut DB, but that didnt work out so well, although I intend on messing with it some more. Just hoping I missed something obvious someone could point out. Thanks |

chippered - The random debut DB that Arod23 created does not have he Negro League players added. The Satchel Paige you got was based on his real major league stats, he actually did play for Cleveland..he was the oldest rookie ever.
What you want to do is dload the Arod/Garlon DB65 or Arod/Garlon Career Average DB65. That database has 25 Negro Leaguers, our upcoming DB will have 50. If you just want to import a few individual players into a fictional league do this: Go to League Setup, click Edit Free Agents. You will see a button that says Import Player from Database. It will ask you for a DB, navigate to it and select it. It will then ask you for a player ID. Player Id's are the first 5 letters of a players last name and the fist 2 letters of their fist name followed by 01 or 02 (depending on whether or not that sequence of letters has already been taken...for instance Roger Clemens and Roberto Clemente, Clemente is clemero01, and Clemens is clemero02). It will then ask you for a year you want to import the player, type in the year from which you want this player. When you do this I suggest that you first clear out any free agents that are on the list before you import any player from the DB. If you happen to type in a player's ID incorrectly or choose a the wrong year you will need to left click on the player and select delete. I'm not sure about 6.5, but with older versions sometimes I would import a player and type his ID incorrectly or something and no player would show up...if this happens you need to click the "delete all players" button the Free Agents screen otherwise when you go to play the game will crash because of this bug, apparently the game creates an invisible player that it doesn't know what to do with or something. If you want to look up specific player IDs go to a database and open up the master csv file in Excel. The players should be listed alphabetically, if not you can sort them alphabetically. In the master csv you can find a player's name, his ID, and his debut year. Some of the modified DB's like Ankit's and Arod/Garlon have players debuting in their first full season rather than the first season in which they may have only had a couple AB's. |

Garlon, thanks for replying.
Just to clarify, is it not possible to import individual players from the normalized DB? Is the career averages DB similar. My aim is to bring players from different eras together with my fictional players to compete, but with similar era settings so their stats are equal, for example, ty cobb would hit with power because of the current era settings. I know that was your purpose for the normalized DB, but I wasnt able to bring players from that DB into my league, I could only import from the random debut DB. Also, what about the pitchers importing with a "1" talent rating for control? Thanks for taking the time to help out. I, like the others, really appreciate all of the work you guys put into these projects and I cant wait for the new DB. Thanks again, chippered |

chippered - I think Ankit tried to put together a somewhat Normalized DB. Is that the one you are using? I only tried using it a couple times. As far as I know we really don't have a truly era-adjusted/normalized DB avaliable for OOTP yet. It is something that many people want so that they can do legitimate fantasy matchups like Ty Cobb vs Roger Clemens just like you want to. Or even to replay history in the normalized environment to see if Tris Speaker could have been a 500-Hr hitter and things like that.

I'm actually using the normalized league file from AROD23. It states that it is intended to be used to accomadate players from different eras and should provide realistic stats. Also, any info about the importing of pitchers with a "1" control rating as stated in my above post? Just curious to see if i'm doing something wrong, or if anybody else has had this problem. Thanks, Chippered |

chippered - Now I understand. In an earlier post you said you were using a normalized DB, but you actually meant Arod's normalized league file. I don't know of a way to import a player from one league file to another. If you only want a few players here and there I suggest you look at their ratings and talent ratings in the normalized league file, write them down, go to the league you want them in and click create player. Then just edit this player's name/ratings/age to match what you see in the normalized league file.
