It was lacking it a lot of areas.

Sure, they COULD have just taken their very good replay sim, slapped on a paper thin career mode and sold it to everyone. Then we'd have a game that simply sucked. There are plenty of those "replay-sim with paper thin career mode" games out there. You know what? They all suck.

The engine is good and solid, but it needed some big upgrades because a lot of the areas had that "board/daice game" feel to it before it was ready for a career mode. Cuts, fouls and swelling most notibly needed to be redone. The ranking system really needed an overhaul. Stat and history tracking needed to be upgraded significantly. Plus a dozen other things.

Now what we have instead of a really good sim is a really great sim. I know a lot of people won't buy until there is a fully controled career mode. That's perfectly fine. I have no problem with that and will not insult anyone who feels that way. It'd just be nice if people who require a career mode realize that there are others who do not and didn't feel the need to come here and "rain on the parade".

The developers know about the career mode folks (how could they not). That's why they ARR woking on it. You don't need to constantly throw it in their faces that you won't buy until career mode is done whenever big news of the sim is released.

There's also a portion of us that will play a career based game for a few months and then go back to TBCB, just because our imagination is better than having to follow the path the game wants us to.

Will Title Bout No Longer Be An OOTP Developments Product?

Jim,

Does this mean that Title Bout II is part of your Company and Fusion? I was just wondering where OOTP Developments will fit in?

Congrats on getting published guys, it's fantastic news and hopefully it becomes the success that you deserve.

However, like Jim I'm interested in how OOTPDev and the community we've built here fit into the future picture.

Cheers,
Mark

The way it reads to me is that the deal with Fusion is that Fusion will package the game and sell it in stores. I don't think anything is going to change 'round here.

I've bought and sold rights to products before. It's common. I would imagine that Fusion will target the "offline" community. Meanwhile, Jim, Tom and OOTP Developments will continue offering products to their existing house list (all of us), online.

It's much easier selling to an existing customer than it is finding new ones.

Overall, it sounds like a good deal. I, like all of you, have a sort of "family relationship" with the product that goes way back to the late 1970's. For us, it's more of a "hobby" than it is a game.

Games are played in spare time (for most adults). Hobbies are something we actually "invest" time in. You can see by this community... Title Bout is actually a "gaming hobby" for a lot of us.

Anyway, all the best to the Title Bout team. Keep up the good work. We all look forward to the results.

I think that you hit the nail on the head with respect to the core group here Jim. I started with the Tunzos back in 1979 or 1980. I think that explains why there is a perception gap between the younger (or newer to boxing sim) crowd that salivates over a role playing game and those of that view it as a snore. (play till you master it then move on to another sim)

Personaly, a role playing game holds no interest for me, but I do hope they develope a good one. The larger the base is for this genre, the better. I think we all can co-exist, it disturbs me when folks get into arguments claiming that TBCB is junk because it lacks role playing on the one hand and degrade the notion of a role playing game on the other. Both are needed to grow the genre and we all can learn to appreciate each style (and perhaps each other).

I am excited to see where this all goes.

Christopher

All in all it sounds like good news. I really don't get the career mode thing, I tried another game that had career mode and to me it got stale fast.

Actually a career mode would be great. Especially with all the fighters and stuff. It would take alot of work, but alot of people who love the game would all love it.

When I discovered this game (about 12 months ago now), it was literally like a god-send to me. That is not an exageration.

When I was in my mid-teens, my brother and I made a boxing game using dice. We made a bunch of fictional and real fighters and matched them up against each other, with each of us controlling one of the fighters.

Ever since then, I had longed for a boxing game like TBCB, where I could create a universe and document or journalise it. Later, I purchased Knockout Kings for the PlayStation. I had hoped that you would be able to match the fighters against each other and watch them fight. When I realised that you could not do this, I was disappointed, because I wanted to use KK to do exactly what I'm doing with my HBF thread in Inside the Ropes.

I am absolutely content with TBCB. A role-playing version does not interest me in the slightest, because I feel that what I can create with my own imagination far exceeds the limitations of a RPG. But that's just my opinion. I know there are many others who want the RPG.

Interesting News from Jim Trunzo.

I'll reserve judgement on all this until I see more actual details. For instance, when talking about history, I was hoping for a way to see at a glance the 100-200 most recent bouts of all fighters, something like a page from the old Ring Magazine. In other words, I'm looking for more than a few rudimentary changes to cuts and swellings. I have no problem with the way they work now.

This is the 21st century. You'll need to make the game more attractive to hook new users of the right demographics. While the game is good now, it needs a few more audio and visual bells and whistles to improve the whole experience for young fans with little or no prior knowledge of the sport.

Good luck to Messrs. Jim and Tom Trunzo in their new endeavour.

I'm delighted with this news. I too discovered this game twelve months ago. There had been a long gap in my Boxing simulation life since Lambourne games in the U.K. stopped the current contenders in their game. I drifted over to the Championship Manager (soccer) series which has now become Football Manager and became addicted to that. However with TBCB I don't have enough time for both games although I try my best.

I still think the current game is good, although not perfect. The fact that a newer version should make my gaming even better, pleases me no end.

My only concerns are with regard to current boxers. Will their changing abilities be ammended on a regular basis, maybe every 6 to 12 months. I know we could do it ourselves, but I would prefer to read about someone else's results being from a fighter who matches mine. Hope I'm making myself clear.

Anyway. Thanks for the good news.

Cool!

I think its good news for the game, and certainly not bad news for us the long time players (late 70's) of this great game. I too have little or no interest in the role playing part of the game, but hope it is completed for those who do. I like the fact that the Trunzo's are gonna take care of us who have been playing there game for a long time. Thanks guys.

It looks like we (those who already own the game) will get it sooner. Notice the quote:

"What is important for those of you who have been loyal Title Bout customers is that we, at OOTP, have not forgotten about you; nor have we forgotten about our promise of an upgrade path. The newsletter that you will be receiving within the next week will provide you with instructions on how to get your copy of the upcoming release of the next version of Title Bout. This offer, made only to our previous customers, will allow you to get the new game months in advance and at a heavily discounted price. The offer will be for a limited time only so look for it in your Email box soon!"

HOOOORRRRRAAAAAY FOR US!

Bring it on!

Thank you!

One can never have too many stats.

When the game was introduced I was disappointed because I had hoped it would allow for such "role playing" elements as organizing and managing your own stable of fighters.

But I quickly fell in love with the replay-only nature of TBCB. It proved to be far more rewarding than I thought it would be.

And it's quite easy to create a parallel fictional universe to play alongside one's real-boxer universe. So I have not missed the RP version at all.

I'd urge everyone who is disappointed with the game in its current incarnation to play around with it a little bit more and see just how flexible it is.

Create a fictional universe, create some fictional fighters, and download some of the ones at Cornerwork. Watch out for my heavyweight Delbert Craw--he may prove a match for anybody you can come up with. And I've created some Filipino and African featherweights that will surely excite you.

The official RP version of TBCB will eventually come, but in the meantime, you'd be surprised at how much fun you can have with this game.
