"The Phillies say that a weight loss drug led to Jose Alvarado's PED suspension" while "MLB's statement on the matter says he tested positive for exogenous testosterone".

Bizarre. For the second time this season a scoring change halts a no-hitter. This time it was Kris Bubic of the Royals on the mound.

Rox lead Phillies 2-0 early
Rox lead Phillies 3-2 after 7
Phillies win, 9-3. (Nice bullpen!)

The Pile is now 8-39, a .170 pace. This comes out to 28-134 for the season, so they're back on track to catch the 1899 Spiders for most losses, ever. Woo-hoo?

Huh. So we're finally going to have a clear definition of what is a check swing and what's not:

Quote:
...
The decision will be made based on whether the bat head is ahead of the knob by more than 45 degrees — matching the first-base line for a right-handed hitter and the third-base line for a left-handed hitter. Short of 45 degrees will be called a no swing.

From The Athletic:

Quote:
The Colorado Rockies lost 2-0 to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday to continue a historically bad start to the 2025 season.
The loss dropped the franchise to 8-42 this year, which is the worst record any team has posted through 50 games in the MLB’s modern era. The Rockies’ 42 losses eclipsed the previous record of 41 set by the 1904 Washington Senators (now known as the Minnesota Twins).

And for crying out loud. It's like talking to the wind, but can't we all just turn off the social media?

From The Athletic:
Quote:
Liam Hendriks reveals in Instagram post that he’s received death threats

Boston Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks posted on Instagram that he’s received death threats, becoming the latest MLB player to talk publicly about threats from fans this season.

On Thursday morning, Hendriks posted to his Instagram story: ‘Threats against my life and my wife’s life are horrible and cruel. You need help. Leaving comments telling me to commit suicide and how you wish I died from cancer is disgusting and vile.’”

Hendriks’ post comes less than two weeks after Houston Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. received death threats. In late April, the Cleveland Guardians apologized to Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran after a fan confronted him during a game who “violated (the Guardians’) fan conduct policy.” Red Sox starter Lucas Giolito recently spoke with the Baseball Isn’t Boring podcast about receiving death threats. In 2019, Hendriks was one of dozens of players across multiple sports who filed a lawsuit against a bookkeeper who’d sent them threatening messages related to the bookkeeper’s failed bets.

The Red Sox issued a statement on Thursday evening condemning the online harassment players have endured.

“This season, we’ve had frequent conversations with many players about the online harassment that has been directed at them. At Fenway Park, we have a clear code of conduct, and we hold people to that standard. When someone crosses the line in the ballpark, we can take swift, visible action. Online, accountability is harder to enforce but the standard should remain the same. When personal and unacceptable commentary happens online, we block and report abusive accounts, work with MLB cybersecurity, and, in more serious cases, involve law enforcement. Baseball is built on respect for the game, for one another, and for the communities it brings together. That’s a standard we’ll continue to uphold, both in person and online.”

On Wednesday, Hendriks expressed frustration with his usage out of the Red Sox bullpen and later was charged with the loss in Boston’s 5-1 defeat to the New York Mets. After the game, Hendriks noted he’d spoken to manager Alex Cora and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow about how he was being utilized.

“There were a couple games where it was like I was the last guy in the bullpen and it’s a new experience for me,” he said. “I feel like I’d been pitching well enough to get trusted in a couple of those situations, and it didn’t come to fruition. We had a couple chats and I got in there today and it didn’t quite work out.

“At the end of the day, regardless of any situation, I got to go out there and get the job done when I do pitch, and today I didn’t.”

Hendriks has appeared in 11 games since returning to the mound this season after missing much of the past two seasons while recovering from non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma followed by Tommy John surgery. He received the Jimmy V award for perseverance at the 2023 ESPY awards.

People are the worst.

Also, let's go Colorado! I am rooting for continued lack of success.

In my down times, though, I distress over the numbers. Maybe it is the media attention these days; I hope so. Crappy people have always existed. It's just seems like they are everywhere now.

Well, the Rock Pile is now at 8-42, the worst start since the 1895 Louisville Colonels (7-43).

(The 1899 Spiders, despite the Robison brothers sending all of their best players to St. Louis [which they also owned] were not ultra-terrible to begin with. It was only after their ballpark burned down and they had to play all of their games on the road that the bottom truly fell out.)

The good news for Louisville is that they came up with many good players in the following years, including Honus Wagner. The bad new was that when the NL decided to contract after the 1899 season, owner Barney Dreyfuss bought the Pirates and moved all the best Louisville players there. And no colonels distinguished themselves thereafter, until Harlan Sanders.

At their current .160 pace, the Pile would go 26-136 over a full season. They need to go 35-77 from hereon in (a relatively-stratospheric .313 pace) to tie the 2003 Tigers at 43-119 and keep their name out of conversations about the Spiders, the 1916 Philadelphia Athletics, the 1962 Mets and last year's White Sox.

(The ChiSux, btw, are currently at 15-35, .300 and cheerfully cruising towards the lofty heights of 49-113. Sufferin' Schiffren!)
