So thus far, the answer is "yes".

I love anomalous performances in my leagues. In my 1934 Thriftlons I had a team (appropriately enough, the Browns) lose 110 games; this year I had a team (also appropriately enough, the Phillies) give up almost 1200 runs. I imagine those clubs would have been painful for a RL fan to watch, but they sure are interesting to look at in retrospect.

dola,

Sadly, I see that they have gone 3-3 in their last 6 games, which could take them out of WORST EVAR status. Any way to give us a recap of their year? What really interests me the most with them is that it's an expansion season and they are not an expansion team. How much worse would they have been had the league not added the Senators and Angels?

The team was really a sad case. Their former owner Arnold Johnson who stole them out of Philadelphia turned out to be a Yankees lackey and for years traded his best players to them for peanuts. Then Johnson died prior to the 1960 season and new owner Charles O. Finley took over and vowed to never make another trade with the Yankees, then however he hired Frank "Trader" Lane as his GM and again set the franchise back a couple of years. Soon enough though Finley gets it together....

Tigers Close In On Flag

Taking full advantage of Baltimore's backslide, the Detroit Tigers have upped their lead in the league to four and a half games, dropping their magic number to just 8. Better yet, 8 of the Tigers final 12 games come against either the Angels or Athletics, clubs they have a staggering 24-4 record against. If the Tigers manage to hold on, it'll be their first World Series appearance since 1945. In that series the Tigers defeated the Cubs four games to three, taking game seven 9-3 thanks to a big 4 RBI day by Paul Richards and a fine pitching performance by Hal Newhouser. Ironically, Richards is now the manager of the 2nd place Orioles.

Giants Remain On Top

Thanks to the tremendous play of both Willie Mays and Orlando Cepeda, who have combined to hit .367 with 12 home runs over the past week and a half, the San Francisco Giants have crept away just a little from the pack, opening up a three and a half game lead on the Braves and a four game lead on the Dodgers. In order to take the flag however the Giants are going to have to go through Milwaukee, a team they play 6 times in their final 13 games. The Braves, winners of three pennants and two world series' in the past four years, are a veteran team who knows how to win, knocking them off of their perch will not be easy.

Post Homers 3 Times In Win Over Braves

The Reds Wally Post had a huge day on Wednesday, homering three times and knocking in 7 runs in the Reds 10-7 win over the Braves at Crosley Field. The win snapped a four game losing streak for the Reds who look destined for a second division finish. As for Post, he's become the 8th player this season to hit three homers in a game, and the first since Yogi Berra on August 18th.

Yankees Finally Catch Fire

After struggling for most of the season due to inconsistent hitting and some tough luck pitching, the New York Yankees have finally come together. With 29 wins in their last 40 games including their last 5 straight, New York has jumped from 6th to 4th place, and now sit just three games behind Chicago for third place in the league. Leading the charge has been RF Roger Maris, who has hit 15 homers and knocked in 45 runs since August 1st, giving him 42 homers and 115 RBI for the season.

Braves Storm Past Reeling Giants

Using the grit of a champion, the Milwaukee Braves waltzed into Candlestick Park supremely confident, and swept right through the hometown Giants, winning by the scores of 9-2, 10-8, and 9-5, on their way to taking over the lead in the National League with just one week to play. The Giants meanwhile were sent reeling by the sweep and have now lost 5 straight games, falling out of 1st place for the first time since mid July. If the Giants can somehow right the ship, the league title could come down to the final three games of the season, when the Giants visit the Braves in Milwaukee's County Stadium.

Only A Collapse Can Stop Tigers Now

Leading by four games with just seven left to play, the Detroit Tigers need only to win three of those final seven to guarantee themselves their first pennant in 16 years. The Tigers will be on the road for all 7 games however, playing one game in LA, three in Kansas City, and three in Minnesota. As for Baltimore, they'll most likely need to win all five of their remaining games to have any type of chance, and just doing that will not be easy. The O's have one more game in Chicago before heading to New York for two games, and then back home for two more against the White Sox.

Spahn Wins #300

40 year old Braves lefty Warren Spahn became just the 13th player in big league history to win 300 games on Sunday, defeating the Los Angeles Dodgers by the score of 11-4, allowing 7 hits and 3 walks while striking out 4 in the complete game victory. For his career, the future hall of famer is now 300-196 with a 2.99 ERA and 2223 strikeouts in 544 big league starts, each and every one of them with the Boston/Milwaukee Braves.

Reds Send Osteen To Washington

The Cincinnati Reds have traded 22 year old pitching prospect Claude Osteen to the Washington Senators for 29 year old pitcher Dave Sisler and a reported $50,000 in cash.

Aaron Ends Series With A Bang

Facing Giants ace Mike McCormick in the final game of the Braves three game sweep, all-star OF Henry Aaron was simply incredible, going 5 for 5 with a home run, 2 doubles, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored, leading the Braves to a 9-5 win.

Tigers Cruise To Pennant

For the first time since 1945 the Detroit Tigers are headed to the World Series! The pennant clincher came in a thrilling 10 inning 7-6 victory over the Kansas City Athletics. After taking the lead on a Dick Brown RBI double in the 10th, Tigers relief pitcher Terry Fox retired the Athletics in order in the bottom of the inning, getting Jim Rivera to ground out to short to end the game and clinch the flag for Detroit.

NL Comes Down To Final Day

After blowing a 10 run lead and falling to the Pirates 11-10, the San Francisco Giants went into Milwaukee's County Stadium two games back with three to play. Somehow however the Giants dug deep, and defeated Milwaukee 8-1 in 15 innings on Friday, and 5-0 on a dominating performance by Mike McCormick on Saturday, putting both teams at 88-65 heading into the final day of the season. Now, after six months battling, the season for these two clubs comes down to one game, one game to decide the pennant!

Senators Claim Green

The Washington Senators have claimed 28 year old pitcher Fred Green off of waivers from the Pirates for the waiver fee of $25,000.

2 Games, 4 Hits, 2 Runs, 2 Wins

In one of the most dominating shows of pitching prowess this season, the Los Angeles Dodgers managed just 4 hits and 2 runs in two games with the Phillies, but somehow thanks to tremendous pitching from Don Drysdale and Sandy Koufax, the Dodgers won both games 1-0. In Wednesday's game, the Dodgers managed just 1 hit, but a bases loaded third inning walk gave Drysdale all the help he would need, as he blanked the Phillies on 5 hits and 1 walk while striking out 5. On Thursday, it was an RBI single by Duke Snider, one of just 3 Dodger hits that sealed the 1-0 victory. On the mound, lefty Sandy Koufax picked up his 17th win of the year, allowing just 4 hits and 3 walks while striking out 5 for his 14th complete game and 4th shutout of the season.

Homers By Thomas And Torre Send Braves Back To Series!

County Stadium-
Home runs from Frank Thomas and Joe Torre, along with a fantastic pitching performance by Carl Willey gave the Braves a hard fought 4-1 victory over the visiting San Francisco Giants, once again clinching the National League pennant for Milwaukee and sending them to their 4th World Series in the last five years!
Deadlocked at 1-1 after five, the Braves took the lead for good in the 6th, getting a solo homer from Frank Thomas followed by an RBI sac fly from Joe Torre that made it 3-1 Braves. In the 8th, with the lead still 3-1, the Braves scored again, this time on a Torre solo homer making it 4-1 after 8 full. From there it was all Carl Willey. Willey, who was just 5-13 on the season pitched an absolute gem, allowing just 1 run on 5 hits while walking 2 and striking out 3 for his 6th victory of the season. With the pennant now in hand, the Braves will now turn their attention to the Tigers, who dominated the American League this year, winning an impressive 106 games. The World Series will begin on Tuesday in Detroit.

World Series Edition

Tigers Top Braves In 6 To Capture 3rd Series In Team History

Game One- Tigers 4 Braves 3 (11 Innings)

In a tough ending to what had been a tremendous ballgame, Braves reliever Ron Piche walked three batters in the bottom of the 11th including former Brave Bill Bruton with the bases loaded to hand the Tigers a 4-3 win in front of a frenzied Tiger Stadium crowd. Tigers starter Jim Bunning was tremendous despite not getting the decision, allowing 3 runs(2 earned) on 9 hits while walking one and striking out 12 in 10 innings pitched. At the plate, RF Al Kaline forced the extra frames, tying the game at 3-3 with a two run triple in the 6th.

Game Two- Braves-7 Tigers-2

In game two, the Braves evened the series at one each with a dominating 7-2 victory. Braves starter Warren Spahn picked up the complete game victory, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits, while at the plate, RF Lee Maye had 2 hits including a double and 3 RBI to lead the offense.

Game Three- Tigers 10 Braves 4

The hero of the pennant clincher, Braves pitcher Carl Willey just did not have it this day, and he was shelled for 7 runs on 10 hits in 7 and a third innings, as the Tigers defeated the Braves 10-4. 1B Norm Cash, CF Bill Bruton, 2B Jake Wood, and P Don Mossi each had homers for the Tigers.

Game Four- Tigers 7 Braves 5

1B Norm Cash connected on a two run shot, and LF Rocky Colavito added a solo homer, as the Tigers took a commanding 3 games to 1 series lead on the Braves, defeating them by the score of 7-5 here at Milwaukee's County Stadium. SP Jim Bunning did just enough to get the win, allowing 5 runs on 10 hits over 7 and two thirds innings pitched, while reliever Manny Montejo picked up the save, twirling and inning and a third of scoreless ball.

Game Five- Braves 2 Tigers 1

Determined not to get beat on his home field, Braves ace Warren Spahn was once again incredible, picking up his second complete game victory of the series with a 2-1 triumph over the Tigers. Spahn was one out away from a shutout before allowing a homer to the Tigers C Dick Brown, but he quickly recovered and retired Bill Bruton to end the game. Offensively, LF Frank Thomas had 3 more hits while knocking in both Braves runs. For the series, Thomas is now batting .423 with 4 homers and 6 RBI

Game Six- Tigers 5 Braves 4

After falling behind 3-0 in the top of the 1st on a Joe Adcock 3 run homer, the Tigers slowly battled back, getting a two run homer from Rocky Colavito in the 4th, and a solo homer by pitcher Don Mossi followed by an RBI single by Steve Boros in the 5th, giving Detroit a 4-3 lead. In the 8th however the Braves tied it up at 4-4 on a solo homer from Frank Thomas, his 5th of the series. In the 9th, Tigers RF Al Kaline etched his name on the hearts of Tigers fans forever, by slamming a bases loaded single to right, scoring Jake Wood and giving Detroit their first World Series title in 16 years!
