To be fair, he was completely done. He would not have lasted three more innings, much less allowed no hits. Javier was programmed to throw no more than 100 pitches. And he threw as hard as he could as long as he could, knowing that he would not have to finish. I’m not pleased with it, either, and Larson’s feat is in diminished.

Also, the strike zone last night was pretty much from the shoes to the cap. For both sides. Nola took advantage, too, until he forgot how to pitch in the fifth inning. Up to that point, I figured on a 0-0 game after nine innings. Calling all those low “strikes” really expands the zone, so that hitters are swinging at pitches they shouldn’t. Brings on the robot umpires!

The Astros scandal reflects on Dusty Baker how exactly?

Game 5 is tonight. Game 6 is tomorrow in Houston. Game 7, if needed, is Sunday. Now Sandy Koufax threw a 3-hit shutout on 2 days' rest to win Game 7 in 1965, but it hasn't been 1965 for a while, I'll admit. Javier is dunzo, Which, again, is why I think they should have gone as long as possible with him. Nothing to save him for, and he was cruising. Abreu, Montero and Pressly are whom Dusty needed to save, and he blew that chance. Seriously, if Pressly gets lit up tonight and Davis and Smoltz are all "well, he's tired from last night, but what can you do?" I will laugh and laugh. Bitterly, but still. | |

Yep, I checked the schedule and I STILL got it wrong. Once again proving that Old Know-It-All doesn't know jack. My bad. (I can't understand it, though. They went to all that trouble make sure Game 7 would be on Saturday [so no NFL conflict]. even going so far as to cancel the travel days in the LDS and LCS. Now, they just push everything back? Weird.) |

This ^^, but to also pointing out that the players went completely unpunished, ownership was given a light slap on the wrist - which is all puzzy-Manfred's fault - and they were all unrepentant.

Well, I would say. I have respected Baker more in these last few years because it took a considerable amount of guts and skill to take over that mess when he did.

Tonight may be Verlander's last chance to shed his "WS choke artist" image. If he bombs again, it may be a lock and a permanent tarnish on an otherwise brilliant career. He is 15-5 with a 3.04 ERA in career playoff games -- as long as you remove the World Series outings. In those, he is 0-6, 6.07 ERA.

Guilt by association. I'm not going to rah rah someone who is managing a team that is involved in a scandle of that magnitude. He knew there were still players on the roster that were involved and that the punishment was far from adequate. He could have taken a different job if he didn't want to be associated.

If he gets a win, why wouldn't it? Even if he gives up 17 and gets a win, it's still a win. Winning is what he hasn't done. So, winning would remove the "he hasn't won" label.
