Things are looking up for the Yankees (and it pains me to be happy about that). I'll be looking forward to playing with Oscar Charleston.

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 18, ISSUE 2
SEPTEMBER 3, 1918: Soon after the season began, there was much speculation that the season would be cancelled outright to focus on the entry of the United States into the war. A compromise was struck and baseball ownership agreed to end the season by Labor day, with the World Series immediately following it. As a result, the schedule is somewhat imbalanced with some teams playing as many as 128 games while others played only 125. The Indians prevailed yet again to advance to their 3rd World Series in 4 years, but most of the attention this season was on the exploits of Oscar Charleston, the first black player of the modern era. Despite having abuse heaped on him by opposing fans (especially at road games), this young man was stolid in his approach and showed that he was here to stay. His fellow Yankees rallied around him after seeing his determination and perseverance. Across town, Ty Cobb was outraged that Charleston was being compared to him and began a torrent of insults which were duly recorded on the sports pages. Oscar never responded. In other news, offense was up. This was especially noticeable in Joe Jackson's batting average of .419 ...55 points better than the next highest. Code:

PROSPECT WATCH, part 2
ALAN LIAO: Braves' fans must be accustomed to Liao's numerous injuries, but this year was ridiculous. In mid-May, he was struck by a foul ball, knocking him out for a week with a bruised cheekbone. A couple months later, he took an errant curveball to the same exact spot, fracturing his cheek and knocking him unconscious for over 10 minutes. Perhaps he should start wearing a helmet. Code:

I noticed that Joyce had seven starts in 1918. Do you know how many of those came after he was traded to Philadelphia? I wonder if the Athletics are using him as a starter more often than the Reds did.
The Locomotive might be able to hang out with Baleyi and Woodworth, since they're all playing in Philly now.

THE CHRONICLE - 1918 WORLD SERIES PREVIEW
AMERICAN LEAGUE CHAMPION: CLEVELAND INDIANS (82-46) Team Batting Average: .278 Team ERA: 3.02 Top Batters: George Burns - .296, 61 RBI William Fischer - .331, 42 RBI Tommy Griffith - .364, 62 RBI Top Pitchers: Walter Johnson - 24-10, 1.82 ERA, 224 K Hugh Bedient - 22-10, 3.33 ERA, 76 K NATIONAL LEAGUE CHAMPION: BROOKLYN ROBINS (91-37) Team Batting Average: .270 Team ERA: 2.71 Top Batters: Edd Roush - .307, 79 RBI, 45 SB Wally Schang - .323, 51 RBI, 13 SB John "Shelly" Shelton - .247, 68 RBI, 56 SB Top Pitchers: "Smokey Joe" Wood - 26-9, 2.07 ERA, 158 K Eppa Rixey - 23-9, 2.68 ERA, 73 K The Indians are better and healthier than last year's squad. In any other year, they might be the favorite. Unfortunately for cleveland fans, though, 1918 appears to be the Year of the Robin. They simply rolled over their opponents. Prorated to a full season, they would have set a new wins record. Cleveland may win 1 or 2 games, but in a 7 game set, they're simply outclassed. PREDICTION: Robins in 5 |

1918 WORLD SERIES
9/6/1918 - GAME 1 INDIANS 7 - ROBINS 3 William Fischer, Tommy Griffith, and George Cutshaw each had 3 hits as Walter Johnson turned up the volume on the Robins in a surprising win over the juggernaut from Brooklyn. 9/7/1918 - GAME 2 INDIANS 1 - ROBINS 5 Eppa Rixey continues his recent hot streak with a steady performance. In his last 5 games, he has allowed only 1 earned run. John Shelton has a solid 2 for 3 day with 1 RBI and 1 SB. Steve Yerkes leads the way with 3 hits and 3 RBI. It's a best-of-3 Series now. 9/11/1918 - GAME 5 ROBINS 2 - INDIANS 0 Eppa Rixey whitewashes the Indians with a 6 hit shutout, while John Shelton has another solid game with 2 hits and a RBI. The Series now heads back to Brooklyn with the Indians on the brink of elimination. 9/13/1918 - GAME 6 INDIANS 0 - ROBINS 4 The Cleveland defense and offense simultaneously implode with 5 errors and only 3 hits. Edd Roush leads the Robins with 3 hits, and that's more than enough for Lefty Williams to kick the Indians off the reservation. 1918 WORLD CHAMPS - BROOKLYN ROBINS 2nd Championship SERIES MVP: Eppa Rixey, 2-0, 0.00, 18 IP, 15 H, 1 BB, 1 K Last edited by metsgeek; 03-09-2005 at 01:20 AM. |

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 19, ISSUE 1
JANUARY 1, 1919: With the sudden end of The Great War, baseball will restart right where it left off. The season will be slightly shorter (140 games) to accomodate time for planning the schedule that was thought to be cancelled. The players, ownership and fans are all eager to end this hiatus. Brooklyn is expected to continue right where they left off in the National League. 100 wins is not out of reach, even with the shortened season. The American League should have a bit more competition. Although the Indians remain the favorite to win their 4th pennant in 5 years, the rest of the pack may have caught up as their players develop. Two players who are probable breakouts are Detroit's Babe Ruth and New York's Oscar Charleston. Prospect Watch: PARKER ANDERSON Although he may not get on base or hit as well as our more recent prospects, Anderson is still in the top echelon of young talent. He has speed to spare and has an uncanny knack to time the pitcher. We expect him to easily steal 50 per season and he's likely to only be caught 10 times. He's 20 years old and could see the pros by midseason since he looks to be pretty developed already. It's a surprisingly weak class this year, so don't be surprised if he goes #1 overall. Talents (Contact/Gap/HR/Eye/Avoid K): 80/50/50/55/50 Current Ratings: 33/43/29/25/40 Last edited by metsgeek; 03-11-2005 at 11:56 PM. |

THE CHRONICLE - VOLUME 19, ISSUE 2
SEPTEMBER 3, 1919: Looking back over the last five years, it a bit hard to believe that this is Cleveland's 4th pennant in that span. They have got to be the most subtly dominant teams ever. We have barely noticed them, yet they manage to win the pennant time and time again. Perhaps it is a result of their personalities as compared to their opponents. This is not a glossy, shiny squad. The highly touted Boston Red Sox with their monstrous offense always seem to get the headlines. Yet the Indians keep slipping by them. Instead, they are the epitome of the old adage "slow and steady wins the race. Last year, they lost to the Hare. Can the Turtle win in the rematch? Code:
