I think that they should abolish the AL/NL structure of the league, divide the 30 teams into six divisions of five and then just let the six division champions plus two wildcards make the playoffs (I'd prefer no wildcards but I know that ain't gonna happen). You could keep the division structure almost the same as what it is now, just move the Astros to the AL West. Give each division the name of a hall of famer or just change them slightly, like so:

ATLANTIC: Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays, Orioles, Devil Rays
EAST: Phillies, Mets, Braves, Nationals, Marlins
NORTH: Indians, Tigers, White Sox, Twins, Royals
CENTRAL: Cubs, Brewers, Cardinals, Reds, Pirates
WEST: Angels, Mariners, Athletics, Rangers, Astros
PACIFIC: Rockies, Diamondbacks, Padres, Dodgers, Giants

Schedule would still be 162 games, made of:

18 against each division opponent (72)
6 against teams from one other division (30) (this would rotate each season)
3 against teams from the other four divisions (60)

As for the designated hitter, they'd either need to use it league-wide or not use it at all. One or the other.

This is effin' pathetic. I can't even stand to watch a series filled with such horrible play by one team. Sure, the Red Sox have been very good but the Rockies efforts leave a lot to be desired. This is a shameful display of baseball.

And they strand another runner in scoring position. Pathetic doesn't even begin to describe the effort the Rockies are turning in.

I want the sox to win it in Boston too, but the last thing we need is Colorado getting hot again.

Yeah, I don't know why I don't seem to remember the Marlins-Yankees series at all. Of course I hated both teams, but I hate the D-backs too... Maybe I was out of the country or something.

I can't stand to watch anymore of this. I'll just keep GameCast on in the background.

Colorado is not in the Midwest. Not even close. Neither is Texas.

Colorado is pretty close to the Midwest, actually. It borders Nebraska and Kansas, two states that people often consider in the Midwest (depending on how you divide the middle of the country, great plains and whatnots).

Either way, in this context, it's not too far-fetched. There are Colorado schools in the Big 12.

They should play at least half of their games against divisional opponents.

Pretty pathetic series. But what can you expect from a team that save for a lot of colllasal failures by other teams, would be at home watching a real team play right now.

Great run by the Rockies. But...someone need to put them out of their misery and quick.

It's good, on some level, to see that great teams win and that baseball is quick to expose the pretenders from the contenders when it really counts.

That said, the Red Sox look great. Good work by their front office, even if I'm not a fan of theirs...they've done great work.

I wish World Series' like this one would get people talking about shrinking the playoffs.

Yeah, there were never any sweeps back when only 2 teams made the post-season.

Shrinking the playoffs will make baseball like hockey. A niche sport that no one cares about.

So yeah, let's do that. Let's return the game to the antebellum era when there were 3 tv channels, the price of gas was 10 cents and there wasn't a Super Bowl.

Baseball can't afford to do it. It just can't.

I know people swear that realignment (which I support) to consolidate the divisions and making it more "meaningful" to get into the playoffs will improve the product on the field, but we've got no evidence of that. We had plenty of crappy World Series when just two teams were allowed to go, when we had just an LCS and we have crappy World Series now.

It's just how it goes sometimes.

But people want an epic battle every year, they want to see the drama or the moments that make us remember something forever every year and the fact is..that just doesn't happen all of the time, which is what makes those moments special.

So yeah, let's take baseball back and make it even more of a relic..just what the game needs.

I often talk about it but no one seems to agree with me.

Now one way you could make the WS a bit more exciting might be to make it a best-of-9. That way, going down 2-0 or even 3-0 isn't quite so devastating. Of course, each game would mean less, fewer series would go to a final deciding game, & it could prolong play even further into November.

Also:

People need to understand that baseball's problems are due to its lack of revenue sharing. I don't believe in a salary cap, but the way that the game is fundamentally tilted between big market teams makes the regular season downright uninteresting. Sure, scouting is great. And having an owner with deep pockets is super duper. But..the bottom line is, if I support a team that doesn't have a realistic chance to make the playoffs once a decade, even when it gets in there and spends money, then what's the point? I mean, pro sports are a monopoly. So I just choose a different sport to watch or play OOTP and GM a team myself since my own team stinks.

I'm not saying we ought to make the playoffs a lowest common denominator. But to me, I don't see the difference between 83 wins and 90 wins. But some people seem to think that there is a significant difference. All that means is, someone beat a last place team 7 more times or something. It just doesn't matter.

Given how long the baseball season is, I don't see anything wrong with having playoffs that are like hockey and saying, "if you can win 16 games, you DESERVE the title." Is it different than baseball's past? Sure it is.

But I'd submit that the reason baseball lost its status as the #1 game -- though financially it's coming close to getting that back I read in Forbes the other day -- is because it's poor at marketing itself and yet, fans support their teams like no other game.

Baseball should expand by two teams -- the b.s. about dilution of talent is a joke, btw -- and align into sensible divisions. The game should allow fans in other markets to watch games from teams they don't see often and allow them to get engrossed in the game.

The Baseball Channel will actually help a lot.

There isn't anything like the product MLB has to offer. And more of it, isn't a bad thing. If we were to sacrifice some regular season games for a longer playoffs, it would be better for the gameand for fans. Some say that it's just going to make fans come out less for late season games, but...history hasn't proven that at all.

Especially if there was a "wild card week" in baseball where teams vying for the playoffs had to play an extra series while the division champs got a few days -- not 8 -- of rest.

Not if you shorten the regular season.
