Hopefully the chances are good, but if he does come back he'll become the first person on my Ignore list ...

He'll be back. He likes the attention. Maybe if no one replied to his posts.....

Exactly. Whenever he's feeling down, he comes over here, puts on his little show of superiority, then leaves so he doesn't have to deal with everyone else's reaction.

We should all put him on "Ignore" and not reply to his threads ...

I'm back, and Bobby Cox is still the greatest manager in baseball.

Lou Pinella

Bobby Cox is one of the best managers, of all-time, maybe, currently---MAYBE...

It is all about your opinion, I believe that Lou Piniella, or even Tony LaRussa might be one of the best. They are both fine managers, I believe that Managers are only as good as their players. They might beable to add maybe 1 or 2 more wins to their record, or the opposite. Maybe the Braves GM " Name doesnt come to mind," should deserve to get more credit for bringing in players that their personalities match better, and with that chemistry is born. And Players play better when they enjoy playing, at least that is what i believe in.

that is just my thoughts,

Boom Boom, you're not arguing with me, you're arguing with Bill James and a ton of numerical analysis. Look it up.

just read this whole thread. some high points, and some low, but overall a fun read. lets not repeat the first 5 pages again, though. MD, boom boom wasnt arguing with anyone, he stated his opinion, whether or not you want to believe that. i think cox is one of the better managers today as well, but not having a solid knowledge of all the managers today, i wont post who i think is the best.

what a lot of people fail to realize is that Bobby Cox was the GM before becoming manager, and had A LOT to do with getting all of the original pieces in place to set the Braves up for their 12 years (and counting) run. He also had a hand in bringing Schurholz in to replace himself when he decided to concentrate solely on field managing.

While Cox has pissed me off plenty of times as a Braves fan, he is without a doubt a baseball genius.

I knew that, Andy. And he has pissed me off a lot over the years, too, but generally it's because of his low-risk long-term point of view...said often-irritating point of view probably being why Bobby has won an unheard-of twelve consecutive division titles.

Wins

The only reason why I said Tony LaRussa is because of his win total, I actually have nothing else on,

Lou Pinellia I had the pleasure of watching for 10 years in Seattle, He is probably the exact opposite of Bobby Cox, I have always seen how Bobby Cox has a low profile whenever I watch a braves game on TBS. While with Lou, If the game goes bad, everybody will hear about it...

also another name to put out there, how bout Joe TOrre, Before he was in New York, he really wasnt that good of a Manager...like what I think, and I am not arguing with Bill James, Managers are only as good as there players...

MD, what internet site is availble to look at some of Bill James' Work, like who is the best manager...

thanks!

Boom Boom, you really need to read the Bill James Guide to Baseball Managers, by (of course) Bill James.

I did find this summary listing of James' work (note that Cox is at the top of the list among active managers) at http://www.netshrine.com/vbulletin2/...ead.php?t=7713

"The top twenty managers are listed below, with total points, (seasons managed), (average points per season), and "era markers" (see footnotes:

1. John McGraw 79 (33) (2.4) * (all but first 4 seasons)
2. Connie Mack 72 (53) (1.4) * (all but first 6 seasons)
3. Joe McCarthy 71 (24) (3.0) *
4. Casey Stengel 52 (25) (2.1) ** (last 4 seasons)
5. Walt Alston 51 (23) (2.2) * (first 8 seasons) *** (last 8 seasons)
5. Bobby Cox 51 (21) (2.4) *** (first 12 seasons)
7. Sparky Anderson 49 (26) (1.9) *** (all but last 2 seasons)
8. Earl Weaver 42 (17) (2.5) *** (all but first season)
8. Harry Wright 42 (23) (1.8)
10. Leo Durocher 38 (24) (1.6) * (first 16 seasons) ** (3 seasons) *** (last 4 seasons)
10. Bill McKechnie 38 (25) (1.5) *
10. Tony LaRussa 38 (24) (1.6) *** (first 15 seasons)
13. Miller Huggins 37 (17) (2.2) *
14. Frank Selee 36 (16) (2.3) * (last 2 seasons)
14. Joe Torre 36 (21) (1.7) *** (first 12 seasons)
16. Fred Clarke 35 (19) (1.8) * (all but first 7 seasons)
17. Cap Anson 34 (21) (1.6)
18. Tommy Lasorda 33 (21) (1.6) *** (all but last 3 seasons)
19. Al Lopez 32 (17) (1.9) * (first 10 seasons) ** (6 seasons)
20. Dick Williams 31 (21) (1.5) *** (all but first 2 seasons)
20. Ned Hanlon 31 (19) (1.6) * (last 4 seasons)

Era markers denote changes in season length, and added divisions. No asterisk indicates seasons managed before 1904.

*154 game schedule - AL 1904-60, NL 1904-61
**162 game schedule - AL 1961-68, NL 1962-68
***2 Divisions - AL/NL 1969-1993"

Bobby Cox can never be forgiven for not selecting Lenny "Nails" Dykstra to the 1993 NL All-Star team.

Of all the threads on this board -- and it is, as you well know, quite the lengthy list -- why in Hell did this one have to be bumped? Which god did I piss off?
