Post Career ending injury!!

Ouch! I had a pitcher blow a rotator cuff and suffer a career ending injury. Other than the fact that I was counting on this guy as a #2 or #3 starter the next several years, the crappy thing is that he is signed for something like $1.3 million per year for the next 4 years.

I'm not sure I understand the ramifications of cutting him and baically paying him off vs. just keeping him around on the dl until the contract ends. If I cut him this year and take the loss, would that increase my budget for free agents next year? What do you folks normally do in these situations?

I need one of those insurance policies that the Reds took out on Jose Rijo way back when...when he got hurt, the insurance company made good the salary. Will we see this in OOTP4?

Cool

When this has happened to me, I placed the "victim" on the DL and at the end of the season, he voluntarily retired. There didn't seem to be any financial ramifications. The debt obligation retired with him.

Yes, Bruce Wayne, errr, Batman is correct with his answer. Do not release the player, but put him on your DL. He will retire at the end of the year regardless of where he is, but if you release him you will take a cash hit of the entire amount of his contract. However, if he retires from your team, you are absolved from the remainder of the deal.

Maybe you should cut the guy so he can get all of his money. He might have a family to take care of and need the money.

Naw, if he's man enough to retire and not take money he hasn't earned, I'm not going to force it on him. If he needs the cash that badly, we can talk about a coaching position.

Depending on your sense of fair play, you can also trade the player to another team. This way you get rid of the salary and you get a good player to compensate you for your loss.

If you want to make yourself feel less guilty, trade for a player who's out of the season, or edit your new guy to out for the season...

Yeah it would be nice, but the computer won't offer injured players, so the only problem comes with human players who want to cheat the computer by offering those kinds of bad deals. I don't see it necessary because people who are going to cheat will anyway and if you're not going to cheat, it doesn't matter because then you won't screw the computer that way. It doesn't bother me one way or another of someone else just wants to win at all costs even if it means taking advantage of loopholes, I don't intend on doing it, but I'm not going to try and stop anyone from doing it.
