49er's GM and head coaching change

Both Donahue and Erickson have been fired ...... now who will step into the mess with the 49er's ...... They will have the #1 overall pick ....

Ideas -----

- Pete Carroll get a shot since he has done so much at USC

- Mike Holgrem from Seattle

- Dante Scarnecchia Asst HC at New England

- Romeo Crennel Def. Coor. at New England

- Brad Childress Off. Coor. at Phil.

- Al Saunders Asst HC/Off Coor at KC

** others to think about ???????

Carroll would be insane to take the job. I doubt Holmgren would leave the team he's built in Seattle. As for the others...no idea.

Someone suggested another possible person to look at ...

- Ken Whisenhunt ; Off. Coor. at Pittsburgh. ...... 1st season in this role and Big Ben's development are pluses.

- then I will add Rick Nueshsel (1st choice before)

.

Carroll won't take the job. Saunders has a job waiting for him already in Kansas City whenever Vermeil decides to retire. And don't forget Leinart is probably staying in college. If I was them Crennel would be my clear first choice.

I can't imagine Pete Carroll taking the job, but then again we did just see Nick Saban leave LSU for the Dolphins. The difference in my mind though is Pete Carroll has been a HC in the NFL, and while I think he'll eventually go back it'll be for a job where it won't take long for him to contend. As I see it the Niners are maybe three-four years from contending. Holmgren won't get fired, and I don't see him leaving the Seahawks unless he gets fired.

Romeo Crennel should get a long look and he's the guy that makes the most sense. Childress might make a good HC but I don't know a lot about him. Would Denny Green leave Arizona for the job he once coveted? Jim Haslett could be looking for work, voluntarily or not. Might as well throw Bobby Petrino in here too - he's never met a coaching vacancy that didn't interest him.

From what i have been hearing Jim Fossel might be ranked high for the job, but really no one else that really catches my eyes, just a bunch of old d-cordinaters.

You know, don't give up on Jim Bates. As much as I'd love to see him stay in Miami, he might be able to put some spark into the team.

Then again, if you don't hire Crennel, you're a dirty racist.

Word around LA also agrees that Carroll would be crazy to leave USC. From all appearnces, he seems to be having the time of his life and already having been an NFL head coach, I don't think he'll be curious to give it a try.

Most discussion says both Chow and Leinart are staying, but that was before their win on Tuesday. I wouldn't be surprised to see a team try to grab both of them together and that may just give Leinart enough of a reason to go. Personally I don't think his stock can go any higher so why not leave (USC is deep in QB replacements from the report I heard).

What's with the love for Mike Holmgren. Personally I think he's part of the Favre factor. Brett has made quite a few coaches look good but they don't seem to go and have success elsewhere.

Dola

The other rumor I heard regarding the 49ers is that it makes more sense for them to trade down. One player is not going to make this team. They need more bodies so the thought goes that they should trade down for multiple draft picks to start rebuilding. Any thoughts here?

Art Shell should get a shot at that job.

If Chow hasn't had a HC job by now there must be a reason for it

Carroll is too smart to take the 49er job

Leinart likes college and will stay

yes they should trade down. #1 draft picks are overrated

Wrong. He's what made Favre into the "Favre factor." When Holmgren traded for him he was just a raw kid that the Falcons didn't want.

I think Holmgren's future depends on whether the Hawks can win a playoff game. I think the talent is there, but that team seems to fold easily and at the wrong times. He is a Walsh protege, has ties to the Niners-Dynasty and has built contenders before. Now, don't get me wrong, despite being a Packers fan I'm not a huge Holmgren fan...but I think, if he isn't in Seattle, he is an obvious choice for the 49ers.

Everyone is talking about Carroll, but I think he'll take a long hard look at what a mess the 49ers are in. On the one hand it is a perfect opportunity for him to step in and prove he can be a top flight NFL coach by building a contender. He has some 49ers ties. He's stood at the top of the NCAA mountain twice now, establishing a brilliant collegiate record to fall back on. Only thing that worries me about Pete Carroll - who I really like - is that he is a perfect college coach, but not a great long-term NFL guy. Certainly better cut out to win in the NFL than someone like Spurrier, but clearly in his element and at his best in the college ranks.

Romeo Crennel will probably get an interview. He won't get hired. Tongues will wag.

Al Saunders has coached in the NFL before, I suspect he is Vermeil's heir apparent unless the Chiefs totally suck next year (in which case I suspect a house-cleaning may be in order). Not the kind of dynamic guy you'd want to rebuild a franchise, though.

Yeah, I think Holmgren stands out as the most fitting choice unless Seattle makes a run or the Seahawks management is really sure he can get it done next year.

Agreed, and that ability has served him well in Seattle.
