No Closer or Set-up men

I started a league in 1983, importing players, now it is 2002, i had used the same closer from 1989-2001, then let him go through free agency. Over that period, when i would go to generate auto staff, over time it eliminated the set-up men, at some points, pitchers who were on the team didnt even have a slot. Now after i let my closer go i decided to put someone else in as closer, first i just hit auto-staff with 6 guys as MR, figuring it would make one closer, no luck. Then i put a guy as closer, hit auto-staff, no luck, put him back into middle relief. I moved him to the closer myself. After the season he was #2 in saves, w/ 34, the number 3 guy was like 14. I went through and most of the teams except for maybe 5 had no closer, all had no setup men? I was wondering if anyone had any ideas why this is happening?

The guy that you are trying to designate as the closer, do you have him set as a reliever or a closer on his player screen? If it doesn't say CL, it won't auto-staff him in the closer position. Try that first.

What 'Era' are you using? Not sure that matters, but it might point in the right direction.

I am using modern era, with relievers set to often as use. I have tried with specifying a player as a closer. Normally through auto-staff the game will make a player a closer, which doesnt affect me, but i am not going through the 27 other teams i have, it also screws up the records, but mroe importantly free agency since there really are no closers, it is basically everyone using a bullpen by committe, 3 or more guys have more than 10 saves.
