Turn off the in-game sound and it will stop.

I think it's crap that you have to shut down the sound to play the game. It's one of the best parts of the game for me. Since I switched to XP - Ive had these shut down problems and it's ridiculous.

Have you updated your sound card drivers recently?

Steve -
Are you trying to gaslight us or am I going crazy...?

I could swear that I've seen you post on some of the innumerable threads addressing this issue (about which, for some inexplicable reason, I've never suffered), that we should turn off our sound. Are you now saying that the problem for the vast majority of players who've experienced this crippling problem is that they haven't "updated" their sound card drivers, and you're withdrawing your repeated suggestion that the only solution is to turn off sound? Or has some "evil doer" been falsely posting under your ID? Or have my senior moments so run amuck that I've hallucinated your previous advice on this subject?
Thanks,
Maglie

I just asked Markus about it and he doesn't have any answers yet, he said that the problem is inside of the Direct X library and not in OOTP. Don't know if that helps but mentioning it anyway(I know that others have mentioned this as well). I'll let you know if any more info comes up

Indeed, since those of us who have this problem still can't figure out what is the common denominator we have in common, I think it would be pretty difficult for Markus to address a problem he cannot recreate.

I have not gone back and read all the posts on the topic but it seems like I remember it being some type of conflict or issue with those using:

XP SP-2 and Direct X9c

Incorrect. I use Windows 2000 and it happens to me too. I just disable in game sound and it doesnt do it anymore.

Well, I think it was finally decided that it is only a DX 9.0 problem, and that SP2 only causes it because it installs DX 9.0 if you didn't already have it. But the reason I say that we can't discover the common denominator is this; the majority of people using OOTP6 and DX 9.0 are not having this problem.... at the utmost, 10% of us are. So while it's definitely involving DX 9.0, there has to be some other common denominator that a portion of us have in common.... and until we can somehow figure out what it is, it's pretty damned unrealistic to expect Markus to fix it when he can't even reproduce it.

Is Steve saying that updating drivers causes the problem or that we should update our drivers to fix the problem? I recently updated my drivers and I still have the problem. I think this has more to do with the 6.11 patch than anything else as I did not have this problem until I installed 6.11.

No, I was saying that POSSIBLY in some cases that might correct the problem but I do not know.

Well, I bough the game yesterday and have been having the same problems. End of game crash.

System Specs:
XP Pro - SP2
SbLive
DirectX 9.0c
512MB Ram
ATI Radeon 9700 128MB
13Gigs free space on HD
All drivers updated.

I really hope the problem is fixed because the sound is such a cool feature of the game! BTW - if I disable the sound, the crash goes away for me, too.

I'm getting the crash also. End of game I get the error. I have in game sound "On" and every once in a while sound just disappears. When I check my system's sound it has mysteriously been muted. I guess I'll just turn off the sound until this issue is addressed.

You know... Markus has done great things for us, and I am greatful for this amazing game. But this type of thinking is definitely wrong (sorry Markus)... the problem lies with OOTP and the way it is interacting with DirectX 9.0c. Yes, OOTP runs for a lot of people running other version of DirectX, but to pin the problem on a driver that is essentially on a system to be used as developers as a tool is incorrect.

That would be akin to Markus calling up Microsoft as saying

"Hello, Mr Gates? The program I programed to run on your O/S is having problems with DirectX9.0c. Could you re-write or debug your standard platform tool against my single application to make sure it works for me? Thanks!"

While I agree the problem did not exist before the DirectX9.0c upgrade, it does now, and it is Markus' responsibility as the programmer for OOTP6 to find out what the conflict is, and resolve it. I will point out that OOTP6 is the only application that I've had issues with under XP Pro/DirectX9.0c. All of my other games (some of these being legacy games) have no issues at all, which would eliminate the problem as being specifically a WinXP/DirectX9.0c issue....

Well - Whatever - it sucks and now OOTP6 on my system is played without sound. I think this is my last OOTP product. Yes - the sound has something to do with it.
