Angry Bizarre Problem with Game

Up until last week, I was able to run OOTP 6.11 with no problems whatsoever... but for reasons I've yet to determine (because there was nothing changed between the last time the program would run and not run), when I try to start OOTP, the first time I load a Windows profile I will get an hourglass briefly... then nothing, no resources being used, no slowdown or lag, and most importantly, no OOTP running...

The one truly bizarre thing is that I now have two E-License Control folders in my Control Panel window... one which is empty, the other with takes forever to load and eventually just becomes Windows Explorer

Now here are the factors:

- It's not an Admin issue as I've tried it out of every possible setting that WinXP:Pro (SP2 BTW... arrrgh!) allows
- Viral scanner has been turned off/on and no effect has been shown
- I've un/reinstalled the program
- Like I said before, I had gone several successful runs of the program since my last change of any sort
- I've even tried uninstalling the E-License Control, but the useless folder still exists
- When running the game (or attempting) in Win ME/98 mode, I get an error 23, which means that I need to run the game as an admin (which I know I'm logged in as)
- I'll leave out memory and processor stuff, because I'm sufficiently above system requirements and I haven't made any hardware changes for quite a while

I think that about covers it... any idea what's wrong?

In XP: Control Panel>Admin Tools>Services. Make sure LicCtrl is enabled.

Sudden Problems...

Have you or anyone else installed any other software on this pc? Although not as common as in the Windows95,98,ME days, XP will still occasionally refuse to let two or more programs co-exist on the same computer.

When you install a program, Dll's, various files including registry entries are put in a number of places on your computer. Sometimes files and DLL's (Dynamic Link Library files) from two different applications will share the same name and/or reside in the same folder. With Win98 the newest one overwrote the older one but now they can both exist together in the same place. Still, when one program's DLL points to a file it needs, it may mistakenly point to the wrong file of the same name. And you'll get an "hourglass" while the program and you wait for the inevitible freeze or error after several minutes go by. People who write these programs can't possibly know the names of every file in the world so avoiding this problem is impossible at the moment.

I thought I'd mention this possibility because your problem COULD be as simple as uninstalling software that was very recently installed on your system.

As I also mentioned in my "PC Slow or Bogging?" post, keep a log of everything you do to your computer and how and when you do it. Troubleshooting will often be as simple as backtracking until you find what caused your problem(s).

I recommend you see my post http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...ad.php?t=86636 for options on how to improve pc performance as sometimes low resources can wreak havoc on your gaming experiences.

Son of a... that did it... thanks Mr. Kuffrey

And thanks for the tip f.montoya, because my immediate concern now is how it got shut off (my guess, probably Ad-Aware or something)
