The game is called Combined Arms: WW2, it was originally called Battlefields. I have been following it on their forums and a lot of people seem to feel it will be the next TOAW style game. As a matter of fact, a lot of the scenario designers from TOAW are designing scenarios for it. Trey Marshall, Daniel McBride (amazing scenario designer), and others.

Another game I am egerly anticipating, is Gary Grigsby's World at War. It is a WW2 Grand Strategy game. It is also turn based. I cannot stand Hearts of Iron due to the simple fact that it is RTS. There is waaay too much to do and the RTS portion of it seriously detracts from what could be an amazing game in my opinion. Not that there is anything wrong with RTS games, it's just that a game of this scope should be turn based. The Total War series is a perfect example of how an RTS game should be.

Both Combined Arms:WW2 and GGWAW can be found at www.matrixgames.com

The same company that makes the awesome Uncommon Valor, War in the Pacific and Korsun Pocket, which is a very good Operational Level game to hold me off until Combined Arms is available.

Thanks for the tip on Combined Arms WWII - Definitely will check it out -

I also wish though, that someone would put out a modern day type TOAW -

I really thought POA2 (from HPS) was going to be it.....but because of the detail within POA2....it is really at nothing more than the tactical level....ment to cover operations that last no more than a few hours......(plus Scott Hamilton is constantly still putting out updated patches to POA2....to get the game stable...and to where it should be) -

I am interested to see the new ATF- Afghanistan game that is coming out by Shrapnelgames.com -

But you can pause Hearts of Iron, right? It's not that bad, is it? I only ask because I just ordered HOI and Medieval: Total War for my dad on Amazon, and I think I still have time to change my mind on HOI.

Well you can pause it, but there is just a ton going on at one time. And then you have a ton of popups to alert you to what is going on in the game. These can be disabled but then you are kind of in the dark when stuff happens. Any of the Total War games are great, so those are must haves.

Personally I didn't care for HOI. I was overwhelmed and had a hard time getting things under control. Kind of strange considering that the level of detail in Uncommon Valor and War in the Pacific is 100 times more complicated. However I could take my time with them. Kind of a Beer and Pretzels kind of game. Whereas HOI, you hardly have the time to sip your beer, let alone get another

Heh, I know. I tried that too. I have no clue what my problem was with the game, but I just couldn't get a handle of it. I even tried reinstalling it a couple of times, and still couldn't get into it. A lot of people love the game, but also a lot of people on their forums wanted an option to make it turn based. It's probably pretty cheap by now, so at least try it out. They may even have a demo, not sure.

Well, considering the way my dad was scared off of Total War because he heard it could possibly be RTS , if I buy him a game that actually says "Real time" somewhere on the box, he won't play it anyway...

So I decided to cancel HOI and go with Chessmaster 9000 instead... (Though it took me five tries to realize that the only way to replace one item with another and still get Amazon's free shipping was to cancel everything and start over. )

They did, it was called TOAW 2 . If you get TOAW - A Century of Warfare it includes both games - it was only available in the US though.

AFAIK there's no demo for HOI, although I think one is planned for HOI2, once it's released in January. So you might want to wait for it to appear. It maintians much of the richness of HOI while reducing some of the micro-management it required. So it might be up your alley.

No - I was meaning a more modern version of TOAW - I have TOAW 2 and the add-on's as well - I just have been waiting for a complelte new modern strategic war sim (in the realm of how TOAW was when it came out)

Ah OK, yes an updated version would be nice. Norm Koger appears to have moved onto other things, perhaps Matrix Games will come up with something.

Alpha Centauri is much, much better than Civ3 in my opinion. Much more user friendly, much more customizable, and much more fun. One big difference that annoyed me in AC, the length it takes to end the game once it becomes inevitable that you'll win but still have to go conquer all these island bases at the other side of the map, is even more dreadful in Civ3, and I never finished a game of Civ3 because of that. Sure, the AC graphics are much more simple (yet far better than the revelation that was Civ2), but who buys a turn-based sim for its graphics?
