20th Century Challenge, quick play league, is expanding

The 20th Century Challenge which began play with the 1901 season almost two years ago, has reached 1969 and is expanding.

The available teams are the Padres, Royals and Pilots (who become the Brewers in 1970). There are also two openings for existing teams (currently the Angels and Cubs are cpu-run).

What is 20CC? Here's a breakdown:

1) we play one season per week. Monday is draft day, Tuesday we sim April & May, Wednesday is June/July (and trade deadline), Thursday is August/September (and end of reg. season) and Friday is World Series day with the season flipped and the rookie file posted for the following Monday's draft. A lot of the trading activity occurs over the weekend, between seasons, though teams do trade in-season fairly frequently.

2) The league follows a strictly historical path - we expand when MLB did, we move teams when they actually moved, new stadiums appear when they really did, etc. We will also turn financials on (they've been off to simulate the reserve clause era) when we reach the 1975-76 offseason.

3) GMs accrue performance points based on how their team did in the season. Through 1968, with no divisional play, teams earned 1 point for last place, up to 8 points (through 1961) or 10 points (1961-1968) for first place, with the World Series champ getting an extra 5 points.

4) There is also the possibility of a GM being fired (basically he loses his team and is switched to another one - for most of the league's history we had more GMs than teams so a guy would sit out a few seasons until a job opening came up - this was called being in the "bullpen"). Since we are currently two teams short (not counting the expansion teams), guys who are fired have been moved to another team automatically.

5) Firing points are built up just like performance points - with negative points earned for finishing below .500. The further below .500 you are, the more points you lose. You also gain more points for winning the pennant, being over .500 and of course, winning the World Series. There is also a "pennant clock" which says that if you don't win the pennant within any ten-year stretch, you lose your job.

Firing has been suspended recently, but I'd like to bring it back. I'm currently considering resetting the clocks and firing points to '0' as of 1965 and start counting from there.

The league is challenging in that you need to be pro-active with your team - you will need to make deals to avoid getting the axe and the possibility of firing helps keep the urge to "dump" down as it could backfire and get you fired. The quick pace also ensures that you can have a horrible team and just a few weeks later win the World Series.

Virtually everyone involved has enjoyed the league - the people who have dropped out have done so, almost to a man, because they simply didn't have time to do it, not because they hated the league or anything like that. We have a great group of GMs and things run very smoothly.

Hopefully some of you will be interested. We're entering a very interesting era in the league with the coming of divisional play and free agency on the horizon.

Thanks for reading,
Joe

Again, I must add my vote of confidence for any of Joe's leagues. I've been a member of this league for 60 seasons and it remains the first league I check in the morning when I log on to the internet (Time Warp Baseball is a very close 2nd, but I must remain loyal to 20CC).

The fast pace is great and all the GM's are topnotch, making the competition very intense.

Join ASAP!!

OK, Padres have now been taken as well - leaving just the Pilots (Brewers after 1969) open as an expansion team. Is there no one out there who'd like the chance to see if they could do better than Bud Selig did running the Brewers?

Cubs & Angels also still available.
